  • Anthony Hull was born in Mount Holly, New Jersey, to a Korean mother and a Black father who worked as an army mechanic. As a child, he remembers growing up in a relatively diverse community with friends who were Asian, or had Asian parents; it was in the fourth grade, when he befriended a transfer student from Korea, that Anthony began to feel a sense of pride and solidarity in his own Korean identity. In college, he remembers struggling to “half” identify with his dual heritage, feeling alienated from in-groups who didn’t see him “Black enough” or “Korean enough:” then and today, he feels that he is both 100% Black and 100% Korean. Following graduation, Anthony moved to New York to pursue a career in acting and filmmaking, where he now has his own production company to tell the stories he’s always wanted to share.

정말 많은 한국인이 당신의 이야기를 듣고 함께 울었습니다. 한국에서 어떤 유튜버가 이 영상의 출처를 남기고 자막을 달았는데, 조회수도 높고 많은 한국인들이 공감하네요. Brother your hometown is right here. You can come back here whenever you want. You are welcomed.

1.5 generation immigrant, as a mother of two grown children born and raised in the US, I appreciate so much for you sharing your very personal story. I am hearing what my children might never have shared because of their consideration for my emotions and feelings. Your story broght so much mixed emotions. Pride for you embracing the dual culture and pure suvival, heartache for what my children might have exprienced without my knowledge or support, thankful for you, my children, all those who have exprienced the same and have become channel of blessing for many more who will be in same shoes. Fighting!!!

I am a Korean and got married with black guy, my kids look like you Anthony. They started to ask me "Mommy why my skin is brown, all my friend are white/black" I think they started to figure they look different than many other kids and they got confused which group they belong to. I believe kids feel stable when they think they belong to certain groups so that is the part I am concerned but also believe that is the part that they have to go though. It is the everybody's process to grow up. I appreciate that you share your story. It gave me clear vision and direction when it comes to guide on my kids identities.

Appreciate you sharing this story. So poignant and genuine - connecting with the country has been powerful to me too. Hope it will be for my children as well.
