In terms of sheer movie entertainment value this is one of the most perfect rollercoaster rides of a movie. I've watched this one like I don't know how many times in my life and The Terminator maybe 5 times - it may be more gritty etc but in my mind T2 is infinitely more enjoyable and rewatchable - I'll never get bored of it. All right, fun fact and a theory... First the fun fact. On top of using Linda's twin for the confrontation, they also used her twin in the gas station, when Sarah Connor was fixing The Terminator. The mirror, was not a mirror. The mirror was an empty frame which had a reverse version of their set, a dummy version of Arnie, and they had both Linda and her twin in the shot mirroring each other's movements.
My theory is that when they broke the time loop, that they fractured the future into hundreds of possible futures... And then all of the versions of the future that had terminators, had the ability to travel back in time. Because the loop was broken, the machines from their particular future had no idea that whatever they did in the past was basically irrelevant, so each individual future just kept trying... Which lead to the inconsistency of Terminator 3 and up. I think you guys are right, that it was a bootstrap paradox, but what happens if you actually managed to break one? What damage can one cause to the space-time continuum/multiverse/fabric of reality if you actually could interrupt the cycle?
    Well, there you go... Pontificate

    • @MrJeffcoley1
      @MrJeffcoley1 หลายเดือนก่อน

The writers of time travel stories have choices to make about how they handle the paradox they’ve created. I like how the first two movies set up a closed loop of causation: The time travelers are part of their own past. Trying to alter the timeline is the very thing that makes the future they were trying to change. Had Skynet never sent a Terminator to 1984 to kill John Connor’s mother he would never have been conceived and there wouldn’t be a leader of the future resistance. In fact there would be no Skynet because Dr. Miles Dyson wouldn’t have that future tech to reverse engineer.
Of course none of that makes sense. Time travel is impossible, so the story is also impossible. But at least it’s internally consistent.
T3 and after introduce alternate timelines. The multiverse. To me, not as interesting because there aren’t any stakes. Just infinite do overs and Mulligans. Judgement Day didn’t happen in 1997? Meh, it just got pushed back a few years. Skynet never created? No worries, there’s another AI called Legion! John Connor was killed by a Terminator right after T2? No problemo! There’s ANOTHER savior of humanity who takes his place!

I'm in the same boat as you are. I saw Terminator 2 at the drive-in when I was 10. It was the best movie ever...BUT I hadn't seen the first one. It was some time in the mid 90s when I saw T1. At first, I laughed at the 80s hair and 80s cheese....but the thriller aspect of it and the intensity kept me coming back to it. The acting is just as good as in T2. People say Robert Patrick killed it in T2...but Arnold killed it in T1 and Arnold caused more carnage. People say Sarah was badass in T2. She was...but T1 had Reese to fill that need for good guy badassery. John Connor in T2 was equivalent to Sarah in T1, the tag along.

Terminator has a much darker, tense, desperate atmosphere than T2. I love it for that. There was next to no chance to stop the Terminator, all they could so was run. Kyles line about how it doesn’t feel pain, or remorse, and absolutely will not stop ever is chilling.
Very similar to Alien vs Aliens. Sure the sequels have cool effects and are more “fun”, but the originals have that horror element that can’t be beat.

I did not want to see T2, but my dad wanted to see it. I loved it. Thought it was so much better than T1. But then, one summer, I discovered T1 around 12 years old and I was so fascinated by the world and the characters and the time travel paradox, and to this day, T1 is my favorite. These movies don't work on "Back to the Future" logic. It seems that whenever something has been sent from the future to the past, it remains embedded in the past, even if the exact future it came from is erased or overwritten. So even if the future Kyle Reese came from is no longer "there", the effects of him impregnating Sarah (i.e., John's existence) is not affected.

The Terminator wouldn't have been able to just carry the frozen T-1000 over to the molten steel. A computer operates most efficiently at 50 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Steel becomes brittle at minus 123 degrees. Liquid nitrogen is between minus 320 and 346 degrees below zero. It's possible the ground was still cold enough to freeze the T-800's feet enough to break apart as he walked. Temperature transfers quickly through metal. To counterbalance the weight of the T-1000 while carrying, it would have to be held against the chest. Not only might the T-800's hands break while carrying the T-1000, but it could cause the T-800's electronic systems to get so cold as to become inoperable. I don't see how throwing the T-1000 in the molten steel at that time would have been an option. The moment the T-1000 would be warm enough to pick up safely could likely be the same temperature at which he could move again. They also wouldn't have known the molten steel would start spilling into the ground nearby.

That book was the closest thing to a "canon" sequel to Terminator 2 before Terminator 3 was released. I suspect the filmmakers used this novel as a reference source for Terminator 3, hence why it ended up being a line in the movie. Beasts of a different nature. I always found it extremely hard to decide which is better than the other, because for me the general entertainment value of the both is pretty much even. But their delivery is different for them being different style films: dark and gritty 80s action/sci-fi with horror elements VS. early 90s big production hollywood action/sci-fi and perfection in that style (and undoubtedly perfection in that effect-sense, beating alot of more modern films in props, effects etc.) . And whereas I'd say The Terminator is certainly aimed more purely for the adults only, T2 is like mix suitable for adults/teenagers - however I wouldn't go as far as calling T2 teenage/family-movie I've heard elsewhere by some of TH-cam reviewers. But, the first one is definitely more gritty in vision. They both deliver and are absolutely entertainment level 5/5 films for me. If I absolutely had to pick, as of late I've leaned more towards T1. There's no nostalgia bonus for one over the other, as I've watched both to death when I was teenager.

Also, the abyss is worth naming here as a sort of dry run to this movie
On top of that, for the liquid terminator, there is actually more practical effect than digital. For example in the sceen where arnie and T1000 first meet, that is all practical effects. They made speciall liquid metal squids,

TERMINATOR 2 is generally thought of as the better film, because its very obvious that they put...10 times the money, into it, also because of the great computer advances (inevitably connected with the extra expense) also the cinematography is so much noticebly better as well with no film grain.
BUT does all this mean it is any better a film for it? NO because being a sequel, we lose the element of surprise, this time we can't have the reveals of the 1st film, because it's been done already, the same applies to ALIENS

@17:12 … he technically doesn’t put an end to the technology, and I’m gonna make a point here that nobody else seems to ever really pick up when I mention.. and does give a reason for the 3rd film (as bad as that one is it does make sense that it would exist)
At the end of the first film the t800 loses his hand which has the chip, which then allows them to create the technology. In T2 yes Dyson explodes himself and the chip which should have put an end to it all BUT. BUT!!
At the end of T2 when the t800 and T1000 are fighting, the T800 loses his arm AGAIN.. the arm that has the chip in it, which would again give them the ability to create the technology again, which opens up for the third film,, which also makes everything that they went through in the 2nd film pointless
So not so happy ending as you said 😂
They never make point of or put focus on the fact that he loses his arm again and whenever I explain this to people they’re just like 🤷🏻‍♂️ I dunno how nobody picks up on that

There wouldn’t be a chip in the arm ! I always obsessed as a kid that they could make a 3rd because of the other arm but in the novel they retrieved it anyway and threw it in the steel, but they didn’t need the arm to make a sequel they could come up with anything any they did

I believe more in "linear time travel" theory. You can change "really small things" by going back into the future, but big events that happen in the future...you just can't stop them.
So...the whole "we've stopped "Judgment Day" " at the end of "Terminator 2: Judgment Day"...never believed that!
You've only postponed it a bit. That's what I liked about "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines".
You also have the "parallel timelines universe" theory. Yeah...then the possibillities are endless...but also endlessly confusing!
I do like the "multi-verse" Marvel Spider-Man and Dr. Strange movies, but they are in the end quite confusing...
