Tim Samaras (RIP) built a net-type thing over his windshield to keep it from breaking when he encountered extreme hail. Perhaps it might not be a bad thing to look into it, if you are going to be driving in potential hail often.
Notice the helmets. Colorado is one of 3 states that has fast wind hail. These guys needed to go a certain direction but, sadly the hail came along for the journey. I guess it's one of those I am on a highway to hell moments.
Terrible thing to happen. Not to mention the trouble you have to go through so the insurance company pays. I wish this to no one, except my old chemistry teacher. When I was on a long drive, there was a cloud. Hailstorm was just starting. The first two dropplets hit the car and I knew I had to step on it. Cloud was behind me, so I started driving like an idiot. Driving 200kmh in the emergency lane, just to get to the next gas station. I managed to get to the gas station, before things got bad. Just pulled into cover and the big hail started falling. I saw cars comming in with damaged windshields and dents all over! I only got away with a ticket for driving in the emergency lane. First ticket I paid with a smile on my face, cause a 20 Euro fine is better than a new car.
Landon Thomas Germany. The car is a Mercedes and I was driving at about 200 for ten minutes. Until I reached the next gas station. Sometimes I drove in the emergency lane,(To pass slow traffic in both lanes) but I refrained from using it, cause german fines are pretty big.
Well when you said "emergency lane" did you mean shoulder lane? I heard that in Germany, in slow-moving traffic situations, they convert the shoulder lane into a normal lane when needed. is that true? And if it is why wasn't it done in your situation?
@@firefox39693 Uh no, the emergency lane (hard shoulder) is usually left as is, but I think that, just like in The Netherlands, it is ever more common to be used as a peak-lane during (you guessed it) the morning and afternoon peak. Outside of those times it's an emergency lane you are not allowed to use unless there's an emergency. But electronic signage will tell you if this is the case and if he got a ticket for using the emergency lane, it was not a peak-lane. They don't convert emergency lanes to normal ones just because traffic is moving slow. Just opening and closing the peak-lanes in The Netherlands takes up to 10 minutes (especially closing it again takes time).
Yea right....bulletproof windows cost MUCH MUCH more than normal car windows, and they still break. Its not like they stay intact. The glass still cracks just like any other glass, its just that its got more layers inside made of different plastic materials, which prevents the bullet from going trough. Bulletproof glass would need to be replaced just like normal glass and would cost much more. Besides, normal windshields are more than strong enough to withstand any king of hail.
Colorado hail storms like this are as significant as ones with hail and tornadoes in Oklahoma... Since we live in higher altitude, the storms need to be stronger and slower which if we lived in Oklahoma it be a tornado.... It's not uncommon out east for storms like these.
And driving in the core as the hail is falling is incredibly asinine since you are essentially doubling the force (your speed into it as the hail falling to the windshield)... Not rocket science.
Why storm-chasers should bring along safety goggles, a lightweight hard helmet, and thick leather gloves (to pick up glass shards & handle broken glass).
Good video. What do they tell their insurance carrier when they ask what the vehicle is used for? Well, we chase tornadoes and there's a good chance hail will dent every panel and destroy the windshield. Other than that, the usual trips to the grocery store.
Just call Safelight, I'm sure they can fix that! Wow seriously that's gotta be scary, glad you all came prepared with helmets n all. I do give massive props to people that do these things in the name of science and endogenous catecholamine stimulation!
What type of windscreen was that? A laminated one? I can't drive yet but will be soon and after seeing top gear and things in Ukraine with people throwing baseball bats and windscreens and Windows I want to get all my Windows replaced with stuff at least this tough!
BarbecuedPossum Yeah they're standard on all vehicles in present day, before laminated glass, glass would shatter in large pieces which can severely cut you in an accident. Laminate is a plastic layer that makes it break into thousands of small pieces that will only cut the surface of your skin. They're also tougher that's why it's so hard to break door windows on cars, you can hit the windows with a hammer multiple times and the hammer will just bounce back. Until you hit them in the correct spot and they shatter. Police Officers have to smack passenger doors multiple times until they break to arrest or save a person in a car. Windshields on the other hand are less durable.
Count Crotchula I heard the opposite, like the side windows are tempered glass and they break easier than the windshields.... anyway, I understand the point behind it.
BarbecuedPossum Look for a video about a news reporter trying to break laminate car window with a hammer. He can't. There is also a video about a guy that hits a car window with a brick and it ends up rebounding and hitting him in the face and knocking him out. The laminate layer disperses energy easier than regular glass, that's why it's hard to break.
Never drive thru a hailstorm like that...the hail coming down and your forward speed created a double whammy for your windshield. Lesson learned........hopefully for your sake!
that happend to us on a road trip with me and my mom and a guy driving it started to hail then the car cut open on the roof almost nd the whole car broke we where safe the police came they bought us food and we had to wait in timhortans for 2 full hours for the guy and he came we went
taking fire, taking fire, need backup :))) Holy Smokes, those are rocks, in my city where i live the size of a hailball it's about 1 inch in diameter no more and rarely happens.
Bloody hell The insane hailstones bashing the storm chasers' vehicle is insane especially as the video shows the hailstones also breaking the Windscreen too which is really bad⚠️
Driving 50mph into incoming hail like that is dumb! No wonder your windshield shattered! Incoming hail (90mph) + your speed (50mph) = 140MPH impact on windshield. Basic arithmatic!
LMFAO at all the instant professional stormchasers with their TH-cam degrees!! Cracks me up when all people can do is give unasked for advice. Can't stand a know- it - all!! Nice video. Its your life & vehicle, do it your way!! 😎
Hey, did you guys ever thought that driving into the hail like that, increases the likelihood of broken windshields????? Your speed (40mph) and hail coming at you at 60 mph, is a 100mph force......bet you dummies never knew that......always amazes me at the ignorance of storm chasers destroying their cars, due to lack of simple arithmetic.....have fun chasin'
No offense but they are stupid?!?! they should stop driving when it hail.. When u drive the force of ur car and the hail will make it harder and crack ur windshield
For a storm chaser these folks are incredibly stupid. You don't drive through hail. My god, it increases the velocity.. I guarantee those windows would have been fine if he wasn't traveling at 40mph
Safe-Lite repairs, Safe-Lite replace! :)
Anyone noticed about 0:39 red car? It survived this massive hail storm like a boss xD
😂😂😂
dont worry the chevy aveo is a car to be feared
FFS, if you're a storm chaser, at least equip your car with shatterproof/bulletproff glass!
that would be very expensive.
Xeldinn
take a look at some modified cars used by storm chasers... they spend tens of thousands of dollars on them already!
Yeah you're right. :)
Xeldinn I would rather spend money on safety and not get my nose broken by a huge hail ball ;-;
@Current Batches not illegal
Time to paint the car white and write 'Titleist' on it.
I lost it when he put on a helmet. LoL!
Hmmm I wonder why dumbass
sounds like popcorn
I have a bowl of popcorn right now lol 🍿
Tim Samaras (RIP) built a net-type thing over his windshield to keep it from breaking when he encountered extreme hail. Perhaps it might not be a bad thing to look into it, if you are going to be driving in potential hail often.
Popcorn's ready!
Thanks for uploading!
I’ve officially been sucked into binging on hail videos
one of the strongest storms I've seen
Julio Lozano No it not

Colorado really did use its Last Chance to destroy that vehicle😂😂🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
@MrMotorhead561 Front windows are made strong, laminated with plastic so it can flex and take a lot of damage.
Is that Reed Timmer in that car I am hearing?
why is this stormchase not in the show
Excellent filming!
How does storm chaser vehicle insurance work? Do you have to specifically waive hail damage, since you 'voluntarily seek it out', or something?
Obviously just has liability insurance
@@805fillmore "Liability only.....It's a very pretty truck" ;)
Damn, that windshield is more cracked than a white girl's phone

200 kph? what kinda car was it? and what country was it? and for how long were you driving for at 200 kph?

Attach a shield to the roof that protrudes enough to somewhat protect the windshield, at least when the hail is not going too horizontally.
any photos of the damage?
why is this not in the show
Colorado hail storms like this are as significant as ones with hail and tornadoes in Oklahoma... Since we live in higher altitude, the storms need to be stronger and slower which if we lived in Oklahoma it be a tornado.... It's not uncommon out east for storms like these.
Hailstorms do not get affcted by altitude
Hail forms directly inside the thunderstorm cloud and it will to the surface both at low and high altitudes
You should equip your vehicle(s) with a stiff screen/grille (similar to bars on a window) to prevent the windshield damage like that.
In a rental car too. Hope you purchased the insurance and stuck it to Enterprise.
I did not skip the ad!! Very beautifull man! Jaja
NOOOO I WAS WAITING TO SEE WHAT THE CAR LOOKED LIKE!!!!!!
yeah those windshield wipers set to the mist cycle are really helping.
how much for a now windsheld
And driving in the core as the hail is falling is incredibly asinine since you are essentially doubling the force (your speed into it as the hail falling to the windshield)... Not rocket science.
did you guys make it out alive
+Maryam Grace They uploaded it to youtube..
0:54 Is that your hailmet?
They way those winds came out of nowhere it looked like you were in the outer circulation of something
Why storm-chasers should bring along safety goggles, a lightweight hard helmet, and thick leather gloves (to pick up glass shards & handle broken glass).
that windshield actually survived that...
Holy crap I'd be crying.
*You're. Apostrophes represent missing letters. In this case, "a".
next time put the wiper on full speed at least it will deflect some hails
.,and stop the car
uneducated ass comment

what the hail ?
I never seen hail in my area and I don't know why:(
weather has changed so much now
The reason why the windscreen was destroyed is because you barley used the wipers
Just call Safelight, I'm sure they can fix that! Wow seriously that's gotta be scary, glad you all came prepared with helmets n all. I do give massive props to people that do these things in the name of science and endogenous catecholamine stimulation!
I think Mother Nature wants you to turn around
Giant Hail.... *puts helmet on backwards*...... we are now completely safe
What type of windscreen was that? A laminated one?
I can't drive yet but will be soon and after seeing top gear and things in Ukraine with people throwing baseball bats and windscreens and Windows I want to get all my Windows replaced with stuff at least this tough!
All windshields are made like that now. They have been since about the 80's. Maybe earlier.
Goes ' Yeah, I looked up laminated and see now. Are these standard windscreens then? If so, wow, they can take a lot of hits!
BarbecuedPossum Yeah they're standard on all vehicles in present day, before laminated glass, glass would shatter in large pieces which can severely cut you in an accident. I don't think your car insurance would like this
This just happened to me yesterday.
WHAT? Im australian?
my car took a beating today... it cracked the back window bad!!
this is what it must sound like inside a microwave.popcorn bag.
The clues in the words 'storm chase'.
This looks like something in a movie. Haha

Looks like a scary movie when possessed crows just fly and bust their heads on the windshield
Emergency: Car breaking with large hail
someone could be a millionaire if they made a invention to protect against hail, maybe something to put over the glass.
I had hail hit my face once it hurt so bad
Make sure next time to shield your eyes with those sunglasses !!!
hmmm what happens riot shield vs hail ;)

Hey I have a solution. Turn ur wipers on
like that does anything, he already did have his wipers on
No offense but they are stupid?!?! they should stop driving when it hail.. When u drive the force of ur car and the hail will make it harder and crack ur windshield
aw the day i was born u got hit by hail
it's going to be ok
For a storm chaser these folks are incredibly stupid. You don't drive through hail. My god, it increases the velocity.. I guarantee those windows would have been fine if he wasn't traveling at 40mph
strong windshield
Holy shit what oes Mother Nature hate us
