I just got started, chicks came 6/1, moved them out of brooder this week. They love the grass and spaciousness to roam. My tractor is only meant to be temporary to give my hubby more time to build a permanent coop. Our land is to hilly, we pull it with our tractor, we've only moved it once after 4 days on grass. They did a number on the grass in that amount of time. I haven't got a good roost for them yet, only 6 feet. They have gone inside a large box when it rains, it probably reminded them of the brooder plate, which I love.
We ripped a lot of fresh lumber smaller than 2x4 to reduce the weight. I used the framing of an old screen porch. I'm going to add a tarp to block rain, I hope they have a coop by the time they begin laying. I will use this as a run in the future.

I didn't mention that I have 21 total, 3 roosters, one of those was a surprise, but I will keep him until there is a problem. My tractor is 12w x13 6L, it's heavy. I'm looking forward to getting some premier poultry netting. I can't believe my husband sold our solar charger, thinking we would never need it again. We had 6 steer years ago.
Am I correct that you guys have moved again recently? Since I've been watching I noticed a couple different places. I appreciate the knowledge and confidence you gave me to pursue the chickens. I hope to free range as much as possible and I'm making some channels too. It will keep them from getting bored, I hope.

Hey, thanks. Love your informative videos. Just wanted to thank you for your help with one of my roosters with sour crop. He’s cured! Hooray! No relapse for several months now.

When you have time again. Do a video showing us your chickens 🙂 I love the videos of you holding them up to the camera showing them.

I picked up a free truck canopy that was in pretty sad condition. The roof itself was very soft and felt like it was going to collapse at any time. But the sides were alright and the windows were all good. I took a waterproof plywood on the inside of the canopy on the ceiling and put 2x4 on the top of the canopy roof and screwed thru the plywood into the 2x4’s going across the width of the canopy in 4 or 5 places across the length of the canopy. Then I did like you did and added the corrugated metal sheet to the top of the 2x4’s leaving a air space between the canopy and the corrugated metal sheet.
Now I didn’t add any wheels to mine cause I have a tractor with a fork lift accessory that will slide in between the top of the canopy and the corrugated metal that I screwed on strong enough to pick up the whole canopy with my tractor and move it easily! Oh to add height to the canopy I also added 2x8’s on the bottom of the canopy that be like your truck bed the canopy would normally anchor to! The back canopy door with the glass is still in good condition and I use it to let my geese and ducks into and out of the canopy. I did add hardware cloth over all the windows so I can leave the windows open for the animals on hot nights and give them plenty of air flow. As you probably know, the geese and ducks make bigger messes popping then chickens, so every couple days I move the canopy to a new clean spot.
By the way, it’s really nice if I need to do anything inside the canopy to just pick the whole thing up in the air and everything right there to get to. I give them straw to lay on top snide too
Update, I just learned not to use straw for your Geese and Ducks. Their feet can get tangled in the straw and cause them to hurt their legs and/or feet. It’s recommended to use wool chips that don’t have saw dust in it. Don’t want to mislead anyone by saying to use straw! It’s apparently a no no!

We also have a tractor and electric poultry netting set up with a small flock (4) and I agree with the observation that a small flock doesn't have a large impact on the pasture/lawn. I had hoped our chickens would scratch up some of the grass so that I would be able to replace it with different species, however other than a few dust baths there usually isn't a big impact. We move our chickens weekly so it may be that they either aren't in the area long enough, or we don't have enough chickens, however neither of those are things I want to adjust at this time.

I built a chick shaw idea, loosely based on the Justin Rhodes design. Mesh floor, solid sides and top. Top is hinged for ease of access. Chicken can be in or under it for shade and aerial predator protection. Wish I had used a bigger mesh for the floor so poop fell thru easier but I am liking it and it is keeping the chickens cool. Also easy to tuck food and water inside at night or when moving it. You might want to try putting a hinge on the roof of yours for accessibility.

Great nest box idea, I'm sick of gnarly eggs too. I need to adopt chicken tractors into my approach too. Great info much appreciated.

I love what you have going on here! Still working on how to do it at my place. As far as the poultry netting... I have it, and I really HATE it. The birds just go right through it, and the only advantage is predator/dog proofing... Which only works if the birds stay inside. . .

Hey! I’m thinking of buying chickens from the Murray mc Murray hatchery. (I’m going to get an assortment) what do you think about new beginners getting a rooster in the very beginning? Do you think I should wait?

Here is a super simple, super easy mod. Put hardware cloth on the bottom of the coop and secure it with cattle panel. We did that with ours and we can easily move them and the tractor and the chicken fertilizer still passes through and the grass / weeds can still be pecked at. It works great.

Keep yor eyes open for a kids bike in the trash or a push mover that has the large rear wheels!

We're thinking of building one. We have a residential 1/4 acre lot. We don't free range but I'm worried how to get them back into their coop. We do have a good size run attached around the coop.

New chicken owner here, but my understanding is: 1) Mow or weed whack the pasture down a bit before putting chickens on it, especially if they are in small numbers. That allows them to get right to work at soil level regenerating. 2) Move the tractor slowly by hand to move the chickens, they learn to come to the front and avoid getting bumped by the rear rail.

I don't get all the hoopla about dirty eggs, i don't have this problem, maybe it's because i put a tension rod across the entrances of all 3 nest boxs with let over curtain tops.
This gives privacy and coolness for my 7 chickens.

If I had land to have a chicken tractor. I be all for it. But, I don't. So, I went medium cheap and easy route. I bought a 8x6x6 dog kennel. Converted it into a chicken coop. Wrapped wiring and shade cloth around. Put wire floor down. Using construction sand for the flooring. I just rake the poop every 2-3 days. I find it easy to clean.

coyotes can clear a 6ft fence easily if they know food is on the other side. This net will keep racoons out maybe but coyotes, not even close

I love your approach to the electric netting. We have coyotes too and while I'm all about a good coyote is a dead coyote (we live in cattle ranch country), you can't always be outside with them and we also have cats...I'd rather give cats that warning when they're learning about respect. It's great to have that approach, then proceed with more lethal consequences when needed. Also, I didn't get a great look at your black chicken, I was listening while doing chores, but Black Copper Marans will have the gold flecking in their feathers and also should have feathered feet. I have a BCM rooster who is 8 weeks old and I think his gold started showing as soon as he started getting real feathers in. Australorps will stay pure black, but will have that beautiful green sheen to their feathers. Hope that helps. Always love your videos!

I wish I had done something like this. I tried building a mobile coop + run and it's so heavy that there's no way we can actually move it. I'm still brainstorming solutions.

I think if you remove the feeder they will scratch and dig up more. Maybe just put it out for the evening. This is not a comment from experience, just from other chicken keeper youtubers.

She said she keeps their wings clipped so they can't fly. I used to do that, too. It's not too hard but it helps to have two people.
