i think its important to mention that the drummer Gabriel Parra, when Los Jaivas do a tour in europe, the Rolling Stones magazine said that him and John Bonham were the best drummers in the world! sorry if my english is not that good, thank you for reacting to this beautiful and talented Chilean band!

Not only that, but after the death of the drummer, Gabriel Parra, he was replaced by his daughter, Junita Parra. A couple of years ago, in 2023, they performed live at the Viña del Mar Festival, and it was amazing. The full performance is available on TH-cam if you want to check it out.

Hi Mark? First time here. Thanks for the honest reaction to Los Jaivas!
I think I can tell you why you didn't ever heard of them, and that's because they are from South America and do music in spanish. Even so, they were very well known into the anglo and european progressive rock circle, like Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. Gabriel Parra (RIP), the drummer, was an extraordinary musician also well known as one of the best around the world at that time (70's). The issue, as with a lot of things coming from Latinamerica, is that the anglo market is always full of high quality bands and the space for latin rock is minimal. The latin music you may have heard during your childhood should be romantic balads, caribbean rhythms or some latin pop singers.
During the 60's till the 90's there were a lot of latin rock bands, and I mean it when I say a lot. Some of them really good, that could be famous just if they sang in english, but rock shouldn't have just one language.
The latin youths from 80's and 90's has the great luck to have enjoyed both anglo and latin rock.
I really invite you to continue reacting to Los Jaivas and other latin rock/folk/progressive/pop bands.
    Best regards from Chile!! 🙂

This song's lyrics are taken from a Pablo Neruda's poem (Chilean Nobel Prize winner); that's why they aren't easy to arrange in a normal song. La Poderosa Muerte is the Almighty Death, the same Death that took the incas out, Neruda out, the singer of Los Jaivas, Gato Alquinta, out, and will take us all out too in the end.

The lyrics are part of the poem "The heights of Machu Picchu", written by Pablo Neruda (taken from his Canto General book) This whole album is Los Jaivas' rendition to Neruda. And the video is part of a TV special, recorded at Machu Picchu (there's a "behind the scenes" video where you can watch how the piano was taken there)

    Lyrics :
What was the man? (What was the man?)
    Where in your open conversation
Between the warehouses and the whistles
In which of its metallic movements
    I lived the indestructible
    The imperishable
    Life?
    Everyone fainted
    Waiting for his death
    His short daily death
And his unfortunate daily loss was
Like a black cup that they drank trembling
So on the scale of the earth I have climbed
So on the scale of the earth I have climbed
Among the atrocious tangle of the lost jungles
    Until you, Macchu-Picchu
    High city of scalar stones
Finally the abode of the terrestrial
He did not hide in the sleeping garments
In you, like two parallel lines
The cradle of lightning and man
They swayed in a wind of thorns
Mother of stone, foam of the condors
High reef of the human dawn (na, na, na...)
When the hand is colored with clay
    turned into clay
    And when the little eyelids
    They closed
    Full of rough walls
    castle towns
    And when all the man
    Got tangled in his hole
    Accuracy was raised
The high site of the human aurora
The highest vessel that contained silence
A life of stone after so many lives

    I (II) - 2:55
What was man? In what layer of his humdrum conversation,
among his shops and sirens - in which of his metallic movements
lived on imperishably the quality of life?
    II (III) - 6:20
all of them weakened waiting for their death, their brief
    and daily death -
and their ominous dwindling each day
was like a black cup they trembled while they drained.
    III (VI) - 12:17
Then up the ladder of the earth I climbed
    through the barbed jungle’s thickets
until I reached you Macchu Picchu.
    Tall city of stepped stone,
home at long last of whatever earth
had never hidden in her sleeping clothes.
In you two lineages that had run parallel
met where the cradle both of man and light
rocked in a wind of thorns.
Mother of stone and sperm of condors.
High reef of the human dawn.
    IV (VI) - 14:52
On the day the clay-coloured hand
was utterly changed into clay, and when dwarf eyelids closed
upon bruised walls and hosts of battlements,
when all of man in us cringed back into its burrow -
    there remained a precision unfurled
on the high places of the human dawn,
the tallest crucible that ever held our silence,
a life of stone after so many lives.

Regarding the guy in the mask at the end of the video, I get it seems funny at first sight, but holds deep cultural and symbolic meaning.
The mask in the video represents an *Andean ceremonial mask*, specifically related to the worldview of the indigenous peoples of the Andes. These masks were often used in rituals and festivals that connect with nature, ancestors, and the spiritual world. In the context of the video, the mask reinforces the themes of death and transcendence, which are present both in Neruda's poetry and in Los Jaivas' music.
The origin of such masks dates back to the pre-Columbian civilizations of South America, such as the Incas and other Andean peoples. In many Andean cultures, masks had a symbolic role in rituals related to death, fertility, connection with the gods, and spiritual transformation. Rituals with masks were used to mark the transition between the earthly and spiritual worlds, and those who wore them were believed to acquire a special connection with spirits or ancestors.
In the case of La Poderosa Muerte, the mask emphasizes the idea of death as a transcendent and cyclical force, not merely the end of life but also a gateway to the eternal. The powerful relationship between life, death, and nature is a theme Neruda explores in his poem, and Los Jaivas translate it into a musical and visual language that evokes that same sense of mysticism and communion with ancestral history.

    The powerful Death
    What was the Man?
In which part of his open conversation,
between the warehouses and the hisses
En which of his metal movements?
It used to live, the indestructible, the imperishable, the life?
Everyone was fainting, waiting for their death
    Their short daily death
and their fateful torment, of each day, used to was,
like a black goblet, that they used to drank trembling.
So, on the scale of the Earth I have climbed
So, on the scale of the Earth I have climbed
among the atrocious tangle of the lost jungles
    until you, Macchu Picchu.
    High city of scalar stones
Finally, abode of the one who did not hide the earthly, in the abandoned garments.
In you, like two parallel lines
The cradle of lightning and of Man,
swaying in a wind of thorns.
Mother of stone , foam of the condors
high reef of the Human aurora.
When the hand of colour of clay
    became clay
and when the small eyelids closed,
full of Rough walls, populated with castles
and when all the Man tangled up in his hole,
    accuracy was raised,
the high Site of the Human aurora
the highest vessel that preserved the Silence,
a life of stone, after so many lives.
