Drawing & Sheathing Sephiroth's Katana

  • Have you ever seen such a long katana in real life before?
A typical Nodachi (Odachi) is around 3 shaku (90cm/35in) long, but this is 5 shaku (150cm/59in). In the past when they used these gigantic swords on the battlefield, the samurai will always have a subordinate to pull the sheath for him.
However, during the peaceful Edo period (1603-1868), drawing and sheathing such a long katana by a single person became popular as a performance.
Since it’s acrobatic, there are some secrets to trick the audience. When drawing, he is actually holding the blade for a second, but because of the small Tsuba handguard, he can naturally slide his hand to the handle. When he sheath he holds the blade too, but because he rotates it’s hard to see. But even with that in mind, it’s not an easy thing to do.
