It's so graphically up to date yet still feels 100% like a 90's game. This is amazing
I tried it a week ago and it looks way better playing it yourself instead of watching a video, truly amazing
@bamboobridge-of8yd The art style is timeless. you just have bad taste
Exactly... And best of all... There is no wokeness!!! Winner winner Chicken winner
This is sharper than damascus blades
this 90s is the feeling of something is right, is the animation, new games are too artificial
So basically: "what would happen if they used the graphics on the box art?"
correction: "what would happen if they *could* use the graphics on the box art?"
n64 was simply not powerful enough to have this good graphics sadly... BUT now we can enjoy box art gaming in 60fps RTX!!!
❤
@@SPD87327 most autistic comment ever lmao
obviously the n64 could not do this LOL
What a smart cookie, using his eyes like that!
Indeed
That "let's a go" when you start the game is so crisp. As a kid I thought the compressed audio was him saying "Let's pickle"
You mean "The pickle" it sounded like some random guy saying it, not Mario back then, lol.
I always heard “Mexi-co!”
Same, pickle gang
Spent the first 15 years of my life thinking he said “roast pickle”
Me and my siblings used to say “swamp pickle” lmaoooo
What people probably thought Mario 128 on the gamecube would look like
This is what we thought Mario 64 would look like
@@Jamesharveycomics No. This is what Mario 64 looked like for us at the time.
@@mendronesg that's also true
Tbf Mario Sunshine does kinda look like this
@@mendronesg something about that sounds so sweet
My mom said I couldn't play this 28 years ago because the graphics weren't good enough and the box art was false advertising. Now I can finally play it! Thanks!
Your mom said that about a Mario game?
Ur mom was moronic.... No offence
@@Samos900She for sure definitely did and it's definitely important that it actually happened
whoa she was right
yet what an a hole you're mom was
@@Paganichipretty sure its just a joke
Only took nearly thirty years but finally the intended art style is playable and it’s beautiful
Not necessarily the intended art style, just the art style used for marketing. If they had the resources to render this, the game's models would still probably look a lot different and then the marketing team would go from there.
@@blu3260 yeah you’re probably right. Was there an alternative styling then that was different to the marketing?
@@brightclouds98Closest thing would be the DS version, which used a vastly different approach.
Short story
Nintendo wanted this as the final product but n64 had only 4mb ram and was pretty weak in general so they decide to do what came out
@@Rexk9305it was the most powerful console ever made, at the time. Even gaming PCs did not have any game like Super Mario 64. This game was the first game to have many features that are now standard in every game.
Because Nintendo was busy inventing modern video games, and busy with the launch title for the launch of the most powerful console ever made, they didn't have time to fully optimize the code. As Kaze Emanuar proved, the N64 can run Super Mario 64 at twice the framrate, rendering 5 times as many triangles, compared to Nintendo's first attempt here on a new custom architecture.
For a game like Resident Evil 2, the Playstation needed 2 CDs with 1.4gb of storage to run the game. N64 ran the same game with only 64mb of storage - and no loading time.
When we were kids this is what the game looked like
Amen

No it didn't

Y’all lyin LS! 😂 Ain’t no way you remember it with Tekken 3 graphics 🤣

Might be something wrong with your memory...
The models look almost exactly like the boxart! An actual remake of this game should look like this!
Maybe in 2026
No, it needs to look as good as Super Mario Odyssey or better.
@@JBtheJMB84 well it depends on who they are making it for
This will be Mario in 1778
The "Render96" in the title isn't for nothing, after all. This was the main goal in the first place.
Pretty close to what it felt like playing this at launch. Even adults who couldn't have cared less about NES/SNES were stuck staring at our beautiful 32" TV, unable to look away. A lot of the imperfections disappeared on a crappy CRT 😂, it really did feel like an actual, impressive, detailed world to jump around in at the time!
(This is GREAT BTW, I'm seriously impressed!!!)
this will be super mario in 2013
Every Mario fan in 1996 be like l:
super mario in real life
@@flashdr1veSPAH
NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN!!¡
Is this a bot comment?
The ray tracing definitely completes the look. Previously when I've seen Render96 footage, it looked nice but not really "just like the promotional artwork." This really captures that wonderful shiny, plasticy 90's SGI look.
I think the promotional artwork was also ray traced. The difference is we can now render it all in real time.
@@pikachuchujelly4119 I'm pretty sure you're right.
In the end, i cried... So many good memories, so much love for a old game, this is pure magic.
Gotta love the detail...
If you look at the upper left whenever Mario/Wario/Luigi take off their hat, you can see the change on each of the icon located next to the life counter.
Sometimes it is the small details that count.
A very well remake, indeed!!!!!
It also changes with Wing and Metal caps.
My 7 years old brain actually thought the game looked like this in 1996.
This looks incredible, this is what I expect a remaster to look like
Incredible, really? That? Mate, you need your eyes examined. Looks good, yea, but just higher res and darker really. I mean, i dont think it was even worth the effort making it raytraced
*remake
@rev2xs yeah maybe not incredible but it looks good and stays true to the original. Thats probably all it needs really. Its way better than other attempts ive seen
@@rev2xs Your attitude sucks. You might wanna work on that or no-one will ever wanna spend time around you.
so many years i´ve been waiting for this moment, the day that finally i can see how really mario 64 has to look, like the original cover page of the box, this is beautiful
It's been said before but... it's so unique to see a mod with an actual art direction
Very rare indeed. Most mod makers don't have the artistic eye
Amazing gameplay and very nice graphics, just like the renders on the box art
Btw, I've watched you play, and I can tell that you have incredible skills in this game, the tricks and moves you do can be extremely difficult to pull off, so congrats to your skills dude :]
Thank you very much!
I love how this retains the art style, even putting it closer to the art outside of the game and doesn't just look "ULTRA REALISTIC". Very nice to look at, also whoever voiced Wario did a good job lol.
The Wario... Not terrible at all, very good in fact! But it feels like a weird combo of his Party voice clips in that voice pitch with Kart 64 lines.
Either way, I'd take it. Whether it's up to the creator and/or voiceover choices for these lines, or how unfeasible it would've been to use Wario voice clips from any of the games, this is a good version.
Something seems off. I remember this game having a lot more frustration and failure.
Love that you added the Luigi and Wario mechanics from SM64DS here, too, even if they have different powers here.
The uploader didn't make this mod
@@CPUGaming I know that…I was just hoping the mod creator would see my comment, whilst I simultaneously complemented the longplay.
Fingers crossed for nintendo releasing a remake that looks just like this for SM64’s 30th anniversary in 2026,with all of the added content from SM64DS🤞🤞
I recommend anyone to play at a lower res (480p or 240p), then do some crt upscaling with this mod. It absolutely blew me away.
Using crt lines with the original resolution but keeping PT, the new texture and the model poligons... I have to try it ⭐
If this game was first released like this in 2025, it would still be a hit.
now, someone needs to make a "Continuous Course" mod that makes the game play more like Banjo Kazooie (all the stars/missions are on the map and you can collect them all without leaving. Combine with this, gold.
This exists both as a Replay Code and as a standalone mod.
@@an2thea514name ?
Well, Banjo-Kazooie wasn't a continuous course. Gruntilda's lair was a hub that connected all of the game's worlds. Ditto for Tooie.
@@WRILLI4M That's not what he means. By "continuous course", he's referring to how Banjo-Kazooie doesn't boot you from the level each time you get a Jiggy, like SM64 does with its stars.
Already exists
i wish 3d all stars was like this
Honestly even with a re-textured 64DS (and updated controls) I would have been fine. Specially considering we would have gotten the original SM64 on Switch Online eventually.
I would have just named it "Super Mario All-Stars 2", with 64DS, Sunshine, Galaxy and Galaxy 2.
maybe if people make enough of these mods Nintendo might start to see value in building a high end gaming console.
@@mendronesgNintendo does not give a shit lol
@@Dairunt1and no original mario 64. But I imagine next year they’ll rerelease 3d all stars with 3 more games added in being 64 ds, galaxy 2, and 3d land
Definitely, I was hoping for the 3D games with Odyssey graphics.
You've got yourself a new subscriber, this is just great!
51:36 Holy reflections, Batman!
Love it! Amazingly rendered, congratulations!
The best 3D game of Mario ever. I love this game...
Mario must have some kind of Sensory Processing Disorder that he can never stay still. Even not walking, he's bouncing in place. lol
To be fair some of the player's tricks used throughout were impressive.
What people wanted Super Mario 64 in 3D All Star to look like
I would love to see this on Banjo Kazooie
Ocarina of Time as well.
Check out Kurko, he has made many new Banjo games, graphics much better than original ;o)
This is wonderful. Its amazing how just the higher framerate breathes new life into it, let alone all the other graphical changes.
You’re quite the proficient Mario 64 player, it’s really impressive to watch you play knowing what it takes to get this good.
Great play-through, watched it with my SO this weekend and we really enjoyed it. 👍
Thank you very much!
How to play this version of SM 64? @@projectlongplay
Disturbingly beautiful, and I am terrified Nintendo pulls the plug on this, they need to HIRE YOU NOW!!!
The video creator didn't make the mod
This is awesome!!! Great work everyone involved in this!!
I wish every one of my favourite classic games from the 90s and early 2000s could be remastered like this.
To the Zoomers that don't understand the importance of this: It's not meant to by a 100% modern up-to-date graphical remake, but to remaster/recreation of what we saw on the box art/promo pieces, like from TV commercials during that era.
It really needs to be stated that the background sprites, camera, physics, and even the text/boxes are all true to the original as well! There are some bugs with when songs/fanfare should play/stop, but otherwise perfect. Truly a remarkable masterpiece!
@@B-t2czI think that is why he’s explaining it to them.
Some comments saying how it looks terrible because they are probably young and expecting Odyssey graphics when that is not the intent of this mod.
Finished it off with a crisp, HD "So long, Gay Bowser"
Just wanted to let you know as a 90s kid, you're my new favourite channel. ❤
The pixelated life icon at the top left is bugging me out!
Other than that! Awesome sauce! Love it!
When Mario said, "okie dokie," I felt that
So the real question is HOW DO THE REST OF US enjoy this :(
Love your guys work to! The game looks perfect !!!!
If u get and answer, pleeease share thanx a lot
Look up render 96 Mario and the tutorial will pop up
The video creator didn't make the mod
I’m almost finished with the original game on switch, then I happen to stumble across this masterpiece wow! Looks so great!
What SM64 would look like if it was a 360 launch title
Why is this so true
Thank you for playing BBH with Luigi. Ghost expert.
Mariooooo..This is amazing video..Thank you. 🙏🏻
Man, you’re an insanely good player and you have incredible memory, I’d be running around this map for weeks 🥴🤣
Plot Twist : This is the real version we never had in a parallel universe, and the 1996 version was just a massive downgrade.
Bro! I’m not the only one thinking this because I swear in my distant memory this is the version I played in Sears as a kid.
Damn those pesky cartridge space limitations.
This is how the game looked like to us as kids in the 90s on CRT TVs lol
The fact that this masterpiece of a game hasn’t been remade officially by Nintendo is criminal
This feels a dream from a childhood night brought to life.
Anyone else remember the first time playing Mario 64, and just spending hours in the courtyard doing backflips triple jumps, long jumps, climbing trees, diving off the bridge into the water, and just being completely captivated by the amount of physical freedom you felt in your thumbs?.... The amount of money I would pay to go back to the 90's is astonishing 😭
Man.. Watching this makes me want to 😢😭😭
How much fun I had with this game and how hyped I was to get it. When I new I was getting an n64 for christmas, I could hardly sleep until the day and would dream of it if I did.
After years I still got no clue what raytracing adds to life. Now I see it makes mario run around in a latex suit
This is how I feel this game in my mind when I was a kid.
Graphics. Shadows. Lighting. Textures. Awesome 👍
This is how all remastered games should be doing.
@@chrisklecker *remakes
@@jockson7574 I don't think you know the difference between a remake and a remastered. You see, when you remaster something it's taking the original and remastering the audio, the video to today's standards. Think of the Star Wars THX edition on VHS. They updated the sound. A remake is when you take the material, like the story, and change it up as if to update it to today's standards. Like The Thing or Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
@@chrisklecker a remake is when they change the graphics and remix the music. A remaster is porting over the game and yes, increasing the audio quality.
@@jockson7574A remake changes gameplay and story while a remaster just enhances graphics and quality.
@@Chris_Thorndykehow about a reimagining?
Dude, it looks freaking awesome, I'm flabbergasted!
I finally realize what Mario says when he enters a stage... "Let's a go!"
..Not "Not PICKLE!"
IDK if it’s the weed, nostalgia, or both. But I have tears in my eyes. So many memories. Including, getting a N64 and this game on Christmas. I played a lot of games back in the day. But revisiting Nintendo makes me FEEL more than the others.
You know a Super Mario 64 Drinking game where you take a shot every time Mario says "Here We Go" would be hilarious.
Do you want people to die???
So enjoyable watching this with nice graphics.
Ocarina of Time next? That would be amazing! Thank you to all the talent for this wonderful project!
Check out Ship of Harken (Ocharina of time PC Port).
Look up for henriko magnifico he retextured the whole game plus reshade it's amazing 🤩
I love how the trees still rotate to show their "best side" to the camera, even tough they are fully 3D model now😂
For the people who modded this, you did what Nintendo wished they could have done all those years ago. I wish Nintendo would show love to people who make these passion projects.
Once you get playing it is truly just a subtle update to the original. All that sort of fades into the back of your mind as you play. Graphics are always secondary to the actual game play. It's gorgeous, though!
The crazy thing. This is actually what we thought the game looked like back then.
I got goosebumps to see this game so clean!
ive played render 96, it is amazing, it really brings back the 'Woah! Mario is 3d! hes also flying! and whooping bowsers a**!' but the only thing that kinda bugs me out is that peaches castle both outside and inside havent gotten a remodel, it would be amazing to see something like sm64 redrawn where the outside wourdl looks amazing, hope a future update covers this.
Thanks alot to the render96 team and all their efforts! Made my inner child alot more happy!
This is most impressive. What a great job this is. Now do the same for Zelda, Banjo and Goldeneye and we are good 😅
Jolly Roger Bay looks absolutely breathtaking. This is beautiful
Me hiciste llorar hermano😊
Haces magia mi hermano
Normally I dislike 3D Mario 'remasters' because they look so jarring but this is perfect.
FINALLY! A developer who didn't miss upscaling the paintings.
Que hermoso que se ve, nada que ver a la N64 que todavía la tengo y andando con este juego.
Lo que si noté es que la cara de Mario en el contador de vidas quedo pixelada en comparación con lo demás, esta genial, éxitos!
To kids that grew up with it at launch, it practically looked like this with what a monumental step up it was
Showing this to someone in the 90's would be mind melting
im so glad that the model wasnt workshopped to look modern or "sleek" ive ALWAYS wanted to know what the N64 era 3D render of him would play like.
plus the Wario and Luigi 3D renders too? too perfect
This looks like a GAME CUBE game entirelly. Nice
Just watching this reminds me of watching Donkey Kong when I was a kid (I unironically loved the show as a kid and still hold nostalgia for it, despite knowing its bad as an adult)
Ok but imagine how good this would look in a CRT where everything is blurry so.the textures all match art style cause you can't see them
4:48 Based 😂😂😂
that kick was personal
@@Makons420 😂
This is like what the game would look like from the box art in this era of technology
I played this game when it first came out and compared to 16-bit systems at the time, these graphics are what it felt like playing the game lol
Words can't express how bad I've always wanted this.
I'm speechless
This takes me back. I was looking at the snow level. All the little secrets. I used to know all of them. Now I’m looking like… “I FORGOT ABOUT THAT!”
Can’t imagine how the game will look in another 30 years. Gunna be a real dude jumping around.
Damn, I gotta say this looks like an official remake for this game and looks amazing!!!!
This game has always been such a legendary classic in my opinion, even though I pretty much suck at it and often get frustrated with it .. with Mario's butter feet that is..
But I still love the game because I was there when it came out and I just feel like it's a perfect package of nostalgia from 96 !
This looks good! I like how put more sparkle on his hat! Just don't let Nintendo know about this!😂
Perfection Achieved 👌
The switch port we always wanted
So awesome! Banjo Kazooie would look sweet with an update like this
Wow this looks Crazy good, Imagine a remaster with better camera controls. That's all this game needs.
I always thought that Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time were both games way ahead of their time by like a decade ahead.
Now I can finally play Mario 64 the way I remember it from my childhood!
Awesome lights!! A big improvement!
