  • G'day Legends, This week I head out chasing some line burning pelagics, but it just isn't my day. Luckily my trip is saved by some hungry squid! Not one to shy away from a feed of fresh calamari I set about wrangling a couple then show you how to clean them and cook up a feast! Hope you enjoy the video!

      A good tip to not drop the squid is to set the hook slowly and lift the prongs deeper into the tenticals

      Forget the plastic bags mate use blows it's easier. The bread crumbs, make your own by drying your stale bread in the oven on 120c for around 1 to 2 hours, when the bread is a light golden colour around the edges they are dry use a mortar and pestle to get a fine crumb, that my dear fellow will kill your squid rings. BTW I love them too.

    Nice work Sammy. Not much beats a fresh squid cook up. I just got back from a half decent squid session myself so dinners looking good here too. There were a few times today I could see them follow the jig but wouldn't quite commit to hitting it, to my surprise the ones that wouldn't take it mid water grabbed it every time if I let the jig sink and sit on the sand. Something I'll try more often in the future. I've also chucked the tubes with wings attached in the scaler bag but make sure you cut the very tip off the tubes so the water flushes through the tubes, it works well. It's a great way to clean mussels too.

    The Scaler bag works really well to remove the skin.. I also remove the head and cut a small piece of the end of the tube this leaves the squid very clean with only the lungs left in the tube.
    Happy cleaning Macca

    Hey Sammy, I am learning heaps from your videos about slow jigging, fast jigging stick baits and poppers skirts and anything else you catch fish with. Now I have them all and I know what to do with them. One thing is missing!! I have no idea where to go to catch the fish. I understand every fisherman has his marks and doesnt care to spread them around but even talking about the depth you are in would be a huge assist. You are living the dream and I would love just one session of it before I am too old to go chase them. Give us some tips please mate. One other thing, if you ever find you cant fish anymore you could probably make it as a seafood chef. Mike

But I will try give more description to the types of areas I’m fishing in the future videos! Haha I don’t know about it being a chef, I just like cooking what I catch! Cheers 🍻🍻

  • @jonathandunn1943
    @jonathandunn1943 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    G'day Sammy, The last time I did squid tentacles, I found that the spitting oil actually came from the suction cups. It seems to create an air pocket, which pops when heated up in the oil. Had hot oil splash all over my face and the glass door behind where I was cooking on the wok burner on my bbq. I recommend using an oil splash guard when cooking with any hot oil to prevent burns and reduce the mess from the splashed oil.

    • @jonathandunn1943

    Can't think of anything worse than doing squid by hand. Scaling bay all the way. If your not worried about rings slice them open with a knife (or better yet scissors) and straight in the scaling bag. I remove heads for bait (once there cut open you don't even need to burst the ink sack) otherwise you can throw them in as is. They come up shmick 👌 even removes the wings (if you want to keep tubes whole just cut a cm off the end of the tube and they come up clean inside except maybe a tiny bit of guts

      reellife2322 100% mate. No one smashes them everytime! If you did it would get boring!
      All off the shallower reefs and rocks off straddie and moreton are worth a stickbait. Just got to be lucky that the pelagics are there that day! 🍻🍻

    Pinch behind the head before putting in the boat = no ink, pull off the heads & retain for bait, take out the quill, cut 20mm off the closed end, place in descaler bag, tow behind boat 15mins, bingo

    Always good seeing you on sundays Sammy. However, I see a problem in a lot of your videos. You fish alone to much! I can easily help you with that. Just saying. Keep up the great work man.

    Great job Squiding mate.. just a tip .. there is no need to take the skin off a squid.. i could never figure out why people do it, if anyone has a logical reason why, please let me know below.. the skin is very edible and crunchy when you fry it up , it adds to the flavour.. give it a try .. cheers and love watching your vids
