Yes the 3rd gadget is a "cake leveler", it can also be used to make a four level cake by adjusting the height of the wire. Next carefully (with 2 hands) go across from one side to the other and turning a single layer in two thin layers of cake. Doing this & carefully frosting between each as you stack them on top of each other you can make a smallish type of layer cake without the extra baking.

Oh... and the wire cake slicer... I've never thought to use it to make vertical slices. I've known it for cutting home baked cake horizontally in layers to put more frosted/filling layers. Set the wire to the desired height to cut layers in the cake and the feet stays on counter to get perfect level cuts.
