Written from the perspective of a mortally wounded soldier and his last words, spoken and unspoken. Knopfler is just so good at his craft.

Audiophiles buy music so they can listen to their equipment; music fans buy equipment, so they can listen to their music. Just an old joke; no offense or anything. =)

@@Tijuanabill well I’ve been buying music since I was about 10 years old. I’d hate for people to see the “equipment” I had at that time. Also, taking good care of the vinyl wasn’t even considered. 😂

@@stevenewcomer8837 Just an old joke; no real point behind it. I'm not sure when you grew up, or what the current standard of taking care of vinyl is, but when I grew up in the 80s, a lot of care was done then to protect the grooves. But there was an element of music being a disposable thing, that could wear out, that doesn't fit with current trends. Cassettes were worse. I must have bought those early Van Halen tapes 3 or 4 times each, wearing them all out.

Written during the 1982 Falklands War, "Brothers in Arms" deals with the senselessness of war. In 2007, the 25th anniversary of the war, Knopfler recorded a new version of the song at Abbey Road Studios to raise funds for British veterans who he said "are still suffering from the effects of that conflict".

I read that this performance was so popular in South Africa that the powers that be asked who the royalties should go to. When he said “Amnesty International” they were banned from performing in that country. Good take on the irony of fighting against others who also had no choice in the fighting or what they were raised and taught to believe.

I've always seen this song as if he died on the battlefield while his brothers went home. He doesn't want his brothers to feel bad. Dead on the remote battlefield he now realises that he & the enemy that also died there, are also essentially and always will be brothers in arms. There wasn't much point to it all.

This amazing song is about a dying soldier talking to the soldiers around him.
You did not desert me my brothers in arms.
    You didn't get that.
Mr Knopfler wrote the words, music for all instruments, arranged it, sang it and played his guitar as only he can, the mans a genius, all of this video you've just witnessed has come from him.
I've read that his uncle fought in the conflict between Argentina and the British empire, the Falklands war.

There's a lot of high minded talk about military service and fighting for cause or country.
And that might have been why some sign up. Or maybe it's just a job. Or there was a conscription effort, or mandatory service. There are all kinds of reasons for joining the military.
But based on stories and interviews that I've read and watched, in actual combat conditions, people fight because every person in the unit relies on each other to survive the fight.
In battle, the reason you're there is irrelevant. You fight to keep the person beside you alive and unharmed.
There's a deep, primal sense of responsibility that comes with that, that creates some of the strongest bonds that people can form with each other.
It's no wonder that people come back changed, struggle to readjust to civilian life, feel guilt for coming home while friends and fellow servicememberd remain in the field. Or are wounded or dead.
I know a lot of soldiers and Marines that came back from Iraq and Afghanistan only told war stories once or twice. They learned quickly that they had normalized events that their friends and family found shocking and horrific.
This song is powerful. It evokes all of this. And it hits all the harder because we just had Veterans Day here in the U.S.
My Dad is s Vietnam vet. Many of my childhood friends have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I respect the hell out of them. Indeed, anyone, of any country, who is called upon to serve in wartime deserves respect, regardless of the motivations their country had for sending them into war.

When did we become arseholes on the Internet, you mean? Well, when we started watching videos and TH-cam and got involved in Social Media. When I write comments on this or that video, even on football forums, more often than not people insult me and shout abuse over nothing. Only few would actually do that talking to me personally, I am sure, but the blessed anonymity makes them lose their mind, common sense, and education. When this whole craziness began I didn't know whether the online world and SM would have a more negative or positive impact on humankind. Now I know.

Taking one irate poster to be an assessment of the entire public is a misguided outlook, in my view. Crazy people exist, they have devices, and they use them. The only thing that has changed regarding discourse in the modern day, is now we let everyone in to speak to the town square, and that comes with good and bad results. The solution is to go get an ice cream during that speech, and not listen to it.
