  • There is one species that likes this sort of weather: the salmon angler.
    Why: Because the next day there will be a freshet in the river and big fish might run the system.
    So, the day after the deluge Ray Robinson and I are off to the Owenea in County Donegal.

    Another great video Dietrich, although I was sorry to see two (now rare) fine Atlantic salmon knocked on the head and taken home for a meal. I fully respect your right to do so but it rankles with me, well done for returning the larger fish. The last salmon I killed ( a few years ago now) I felt guilty when I saw the eggs in it's belly and felt they would be better in the river as in my refuse bin. A meal of wild salmon is not required in my house. Everyone knows nowadays how the salmon population is in drastic decline and perhaps I am wrong but I think honestly we anglers have a duty to return every fish we have the privilege to catch. This is my personal view and I fully respect your right to differ.

      +Dietrich Bohnhorst well said you should no be made out to be a criminal or feel bad for taken the odd salmon for the table but same man complaining. before if he wanted to eat salmon he would buy salmon that came from fish farms for table after all the damage they have done to salmon stocks well done enjoy your fishing and one for table least in Ireland its no banned and you showed you were good sportman putting the other salmon back .how much does cost to fish were you were please thanks for your time all the best.

      @Jonathon Roberts There's no need to be unpleasant. If you return all your fish you are basically just playing games with living creatures. That's not sport, it's just wanton cruelty. Kill the one or two that are in tip-top condition and the size you want, put the rest back. I'm truly sick of all this " So long buddy!" bollocks. You don't stick hooks in your buddies.
      Good for you, Dietrich!

    Cracking salmon...you cant beat catching salmon on trout tackle...some of the best sport ive had has been on trout tackle...

    • @DietrichBohnhorst
      @DietrichBohnhorst  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ross The Bearded Scotsman Thank you, Ross. In the past, when there were ample sea trout about, we often had "accidentally" salmon on trout gear, was always very exciting and you were amazed how many of them were safely landed.

    • @gutworm686
      @gutworm686 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ross The Bearded Scotsman that’s not trout tackle. On a small to medium river all you require is a 10’ for a 7. Anything larger is just ridiculous. You can get them in far faster on the shorter rod too so if you’re a sap and intend to return it, it has a chance of survival.

    Great video Dietrich! I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm very tempted to have a trip over there and have a crack! I'd love to fish for salmon in a small river with a single handed rod. Looks great fun.

    Lovely film Dietrich and two beautiful fish. I'm guessing your single handed rod is c. 11 foot in length to clear the bankside vegetation. The Owenea seems to be characterised by high grass banks with no shingle or wading. Well done!

      It is a C&R only river these days. We use single handers, class 8 or 9; some people use double handers, also class 8 or 9.

  • @andrewshepherd1579
    @andrewshepherd1579 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How far below the surface do the Salmon take the fly? Do you fish a floating or intermediate line?

    • @DietrichBohnhorst
      @DietrichBohnhorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We fish floating lines with a short (two foot) sinking tip. The fish take then in various depths; you just have to try.

      Dietrich Bohnhorst It varies but we almost always have a pumpkin killing frost around August 15. One year we were down south buying musk melons at a fair & talking to vendor. A fellow overheard where we were from oh just went through you guys got 1.5 feet of snow. Yup. However one must be prepared say fishing in the mountain lakes as July has killed a lot of individuals as with any month. Alberta is a land of extremes we can have -80 windchills in winter & 37 C in summer. It took me 20 years to get my first squash here if that helps ☺.

    Poor catch and release on that fish you let you, 9 chances out of 10 she will not spawn due to being stressed because u wore then fish completely out why play a fish completely to exhaustion and then release it is beyond me
