Enjoying this song in Florida, as a 74 year old retired Colombian-American lawyer. I must be a reincarnated Gambian.

I‘m a German, 55 years and my husband was a Gambian. He died here in Germany in 2011 (cancer). Today he would have celebrated his 62nd birthday.
In 1998 he took me to his country and we spent there two years. This was the most beautiful time of my life. For the first time, I felt like real living - I felt alive like never before.
So, I want to say „Thank you“ to my husband again, who showed me a place where my soul could breath.
Whenever I feel down, doubting what this life is all about, I go back in my mind and think of those glory days ❤

I am a retired dentist in the USA. I have been a fan of Reggae and African music for nearly 50 years. I had no knowledge of Sona Jobarteh or the Kora until I saw tonight's story on '60 Minutes'. Fascinating music! Now I have something new to explore. Gambia looks like a very interesting country. Thank you!!

I am from Pakistan; when I was little, my parents moved us to Africa, and I was raised there. We had some wonderful times and made beautiful memories. My siblings and I learned the language, and remember it to this day. Now, we've left Africa, but to me, Africa is my childhood, Africans are my people, and African music often takes me back to that lovely place in my mind; a place of perfection. That's why I was drawn to this stellar song; it took me there again. Thank You for uploading it.

I saw you in Roseburg, Oregon, USA, and I was so amazed at your talent. I admire and respect you, for the work that you do for Gambia. I was grateful and honored that you I saw you in person -- my life was honored by your connection to my life. Thank you for your music -- for your contribution to this world. I pray, hope for, envision that you are a great financial wealth and enrich the arts in Gambia, who contribute and enrich this world with their arts: music, literature, drama, etc. and more. Blessings to you and the whole of Africa!!! I love you and pray for a safe journey throughout this world -- playing music, Music that we need to keep the world at peace and thinking of a healthy new reality for us all in equality and love.

Best Islamic country of whole Africa, because the Islam in this country is in harmony with everyone else, and all other religions. I made lots of friends there. What a good friendly people over there. It's my second home now.

TH-cam hides many things. This African music deserve more than these views. When a woman has a passion on something she always convince me. When i listen to such real musics i feel like i am going to cry. Love from Rwanda ❤. I am singing it without understanding what i am singing. I wish i can understand

it certainly does, been hard to find African music that wasn't 'New age' autotuned-to-shit garbage or some crappy quality video zooming on someones left leg while they dance in the most generic way imaginable while claiming to be 'traditional African' music

Shame on me for discovering you in 2019. This song is a gem. Mandinka sounds like a mix of Arabic + Swahili.
    Love from KENYA

You're right. There are many Arabic words in Mandinka similar to Swahili I guess.
I'm just fascinated how intertwined African languages really are. Africa must unite for it's people to take their rightful place on earth.

Mutie Mule ...It's not Arabic. I think you mean 'Afro-Asiatic'. The Afro-Asiatic language is extremely old and has existed long before Arabs entered Africa. Arabs only arrived in West Africa in 700 BC. However, Mandinka have had their language for over 10,000 years. These Mandinka people are responsible for some of the greatest empires in Africa. Songhai, Mali, and Ghana Empire was created by their ancestors. I’m even thinking it was their ancestors that ruled Pre-historic Egypt at one point before they migrated to West Africa due to Invasions/also due to the spread of the Sahara.
The Mandinka, Soninke and Songhai people and their history are beyond fascinating. Let’s not even talk about their music - they are the founders of the Saharan 'Desert Blues' music style. Ali Farka Toure is one of them. These people are full of so much culture and history. They are also very closely related to the Dogon. The only difference is that the Dogon are not Muslim and have maintained the pre-Islamic traditions. You should read about them.

Simply beautiful. Here is an English translation I found:
    The Gambia
    Built in peace and stability,
    hosted by development and progress,
    Humanity
and happiness is on all faces,
    our outstanding country Gambia.
    Wherever you are
    , never forget
    your homeland Gambia
For if you forget your roots,
you turn your back on who you are.
    (Refrain):
    We are proud…
We are proud of our country
    (Refrain):
    We are proud…
Let us come together and unite
    (Refrain):
    We are proud…
This is what will result in progress
People of the Gambia; this is the beautiful land
People of the Gambia; this is the peaceful land
People of the Gambia; this is the land of our people
People of the Gambia; there is nothing that compares to this land
People honour this country because it is blessed
We should not abandon our beautiful country
Sons/daughters of this land, let us come to together
I will truly always be proud to be a Gambian
Wherever I travel, I shall tell of the wonders of this country
There is nowhere that compares to Gambia
    Outro:
The home of Peace… everyone say “Gambia”
The home of Blessings… everyone say “Gambia”
The home of Humility… everyone say “Gambia”
The home of Family… everyone say “Gambia”
