Kurt Juergens I think its a mix of both, if you know from experience generally where to put it for what pitch, when you start to bow you can make small adjustments.
The singalong of the missing horn part and Julian conducting it with a huge smile on his face is almost unbearably beautiful moment. To see Jeff performing these songs in front of crowds wanting to sing every word with him AND to see him enjoying it is nothing short of tearjerking.
It's wonderful...my favorite song when I am feeling bad...here we all are, in the beginning of a pandemic that could kill so many of us and our "leader" says it's a hoax... people are fighting over toilet paper, for chrissakes.
I don’t really understand why people don’t like Jeff’s voice, I’ve heard people say they think it’s annoying. I think it’s unique and fits perfectly with this music, I like the nasally sound of his voice.
I love how Julian is so animated, his hat... Jeff's sweater and beard, and the music!!! The da-da-da's of the crowd was my favorite of all, though. I wish I had the money and the time to go, but today I'm buying tickets for their reunited tour!
There was a woman next to me in the front who got sick between the Music Tapes' and Mangum's sets. She had definitely been over-served or something else. A janitor had to come in to mop things up. Her quote was classic, "It must have been the tacos". I don't think so. Anyway, her arms do make an appearance at the end of this video.
I went to Jeff's show in Ames, Iowa last year. I'd done enough research on The Music Tapes beforehand (saw them listed on the show's schedule and decided to find out who they were) to realize that Julian was the same person who played the saw on Aeroplane originally. Needless to say, I was already excited to be seeing Jeff live, but when Julian came out with his saw and I realized they were playing this song, I could have died of joy. I doubt I'll ever see a more magical show.
You know, I've watched this who knows how many times, it's my go-to when things feel bad at two or three am and I can't get back to sleep...but it never occurred to me before that Jeff and Julian apparently didn't have any plan to cover the horn solo...they expected the crowd to carry that part for them.
YoknapatawphaKid I was there too!!! You could just feel that we were all sharing one of the greatest and most beautiful moments we'd ever experience in our lives. It was so beautiful to see how the whole band was so loving to each other and genuinely excited too. I haven't felt many things more palpable and timeless. Wow...
It makes me so happy to have watched this but also extremely sad that I probably won't get to see it live. My ex girlfriend showed me Neutral Milk Hotel and it will forever be a part of me now. I'm grateful to the date to her for showing me this. It's impossible for me not to tear up watching this.
Excellent footage of the show! Thanks for sharing. So glad Jeff is making the rounds again after 15 years. Going to see the full NMH line up in Chicago in Feb 2014. I cannot wait.
I saw NMH at a show in New York and none of the crowd was singing. They were all just standing there like zombies. This seems much better, glad there are crowds that aren't afraid to get weird and show their love for this music
When I saw them, Jeff saw some dude filming in the crowd and stopped the show. He then yelled at him in front of everyone, telling them to live outside their phones.
PotatoMaGobinus as OP explained, I think he wants people to actually *be* there experiencing it. I think for most people nowadays it seems more important to get a 20 second Instagram video to prove you were there than to actually just like, sing songs and enjoy a night with a couple hundred strangers. (I say this as a 20 year old who lives on a laptop, not claiming to be any better)
the first time i ever saw them live, i was 17 and my older sister was with me. i had a phone at the time, but it was a flip phone that could only poorly-record audio. so naturally, i recorded the show, and held the phone through my long-sleeve shirt to hear jeff, but i remember very vividly him seeing the phone slip out from beneath my sleeve, and he looked at me, and slowed down playing the guitar. honestly one of the most terrifying moments of my life, he just stared at me and made a face though. i guess he *SAW* the look of horror on mine.
i've been reading about this "singing saw" thinking it was just a cute nickname for some obscure ramshackle device they came up with and then- IT'S A SAW. IT'S A FUCKING SAW 😂
Just about everyone. Fortunately for the recording's sake, there were a few quieter people near me. I was also right in front of a speaker. I was filming with an iPhone so I'm surprised by how it turned out. I stabilized the phone on my arm on top of the barricade.
What a beautiful face I have found in this place That is circling all 'round the sun What a beautiful dream That could flash on the screen In a blink of an eye and be gone from me Soft and sweet Let me hold it close and keep it here with me And one day we will die And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea But for now we are young Let us lay in the sun And count every beautiful thing we can see Love to be In the arms of all I'm keepin' here with me What a curious life We have found here tonight There is music that sounds from the street There are lights in the clouds Anna's ghost all around Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me Soft and sweet How the notes all bend and reach above the trees Now how I remember you How I would push my fingers through Your mouth to make those muscles move That made your voice so smooth and sweet But now we keep where we don't know All secrets sleep in winter clothes With one you loved so long ago Now he don't even know his name What a beautiful face I have found in this place That is circling all 'round the sun And when we meet on a cloud I'll be laughing out loud I'll be laughing with everyone I see Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all
I recently found this band I was so confident he was playing a theremin. Ive seen people bow crotales, gong, and ive bowed a vibraphone, but i wouldve never guessed he was bowing a fucking saw. Love it!

I'm so jealous of the saw, that must now insult it... I mean thank you 21st century innovations that allow me to listen to almost any piece of music ever written for almost free, in only seconds. I mean, great performance thx for the wonderful music? I don't know where I am.
I really want to see them, but the nearest show to me (Omaha) is sold out! :( I was really hoping and saving up money, but driving to Ohio in July and staying at a hotel would be too costly.
That man is playing a saw. Holy crap these guys are great.
***** How does the player get the pitch right? Just by ear/experience?
Kurt Juergens I think its a mix of both, if you know from experience generally where to put it for what pitch, when you start to bow you can make small adjustments.
It's kinda like a slide instrument like a trumbone
godspeed you uses a saw for some of there music lol

Quit tearjerking his balls Henry

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all 'round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me
And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keepin' here with me
What a curious life
We have found here tonight
There is music that sounds from the street
There are lights in the clouds
Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees
Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
But now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name
What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all 'round the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all
