Zone Transit - Edinburgh to East fortune - Low and slow to BALADO (Scotland) - Part 4

- We left Balado Airfield to try and make progress towards getting home. As the weather was looking to be changing the next day, we managed to get a ZONE TRANSIT through Edinburgh Airport, as this was the quickest route to East Fortune airfield. The events of this flight, flying down the Forth Bridges was just amazing and I don't know when I would do that again.
I hope this video inspires more pilots to note that you don't need to go fast, you don't need a Rotax 912, what you do need is mates to fly with to make the journey fun.

That's my stomping ground.
I transit Edinburgh's zone quite frequently but I still think that there is something special about my little insect being cleared over the top of an international airport and seeing all the heavy-metal milling around below us.
Always good to see you in the comments. I do like your channel name. It was definitely a very memorable flight.
I've no idea why TH-cam recommended this video to me, but I'm glad it did. I'll have to go and check out the rest of the series. 👍
Welcome to the channel. It's strange, quite a few seem to have found this video. It's number 4 of 5 videos, if that helps.
I just love TH-cam algorithms as it leads you to places that you never knew that you needed to go to but here I am and I’m so pleased! What a bloody awesome video to watch! Now I need to learn how to fly even though it’s most likely way above my intellect.
Hi Sticky wicket, welcome to the channel. It seems TH-cam has been kind and promoted this video. You don't need to be that clever to fly, just have a good instructor. I hope you enjoyed some of the other videos. You're always welcome here.
So cool, Giles... Brilliant. You guy's are on to something here. Go do Europe and take us with you.
Hi Barry, shhh don't give Mark and more crazy ideas. Haha.
What a brilliant trip. Lots going on, especially with the transit. Remember flying over the firth bridge in a chipmunk from RAF Turnhouse as a cadet. This is a great series prooving what versatile aircraft all the iteration of the peabees are.
How did I not know know this about you Lee, you're a book of secrets.
Fabulous RT, if you're polite and know what you're doing then controllers are more than happy with transits, great video!
Hi Mark, thank you for your kind words. I think it's more to do with a good edit and being able to hide my mistakes. It was a wonderful experience.
YAY!!!! Thanks for the shout out, and yes, gutted the timing just didn't work out - selfish folk getting married and inviting me 🤣 Great flight over the bridges and over the city! Lovely to see East Fortune too - I was there just 2 days ago doing my Reval with Gordon and lots of landings on 11, a couple as 'engine out' practice too! So glad you made it up here!!! Well done all of you!!
Hi Mike, I hope the reval went OK, never stop learning, but I can't believe your 2 years is up already. You do fly in a wonderful part of the country. That grass strip is a bit short with a nice step in it. 😂.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Yep, the 2 years kind of snuck up on me!! Totally agree on the never stop learning - that was my focus on the reval - not to seek confirmation, but to find any little (or big!) errors that had crept in - it was an awesome session, pretty intensive hour of circuits, practice engine failures - learnt a load!
Part of the grass extension has been lowered and smoothed out, but the rest is still rough - generally best avoided 🤣 We are rather spoiled for where we fly. Mind you, the scenery around Darley Moor is pretty nice too 😀
Superb guys 👌
Hi Dan, glad you enjoyed it. This was a year ago tomorrow.
Excellent effort guys. Scary stuff all that ATC. Very professional. Thanks for sharing
Hi Jaybee, I think the edit makes it seem more scary than it actually is due to the compression nature of the edit. I have been told Edinburgh ATC are very helpful, which I did appreciate.
flying like this with radio and all that stuff would be way too stressful for me. i fly because i want to relax and overcome my fear of heights. fiddle with ATCs doesnt sound much fun. still appreciate the content. you guys make it look as you flying a cargo boing 747 and waaaay beyond my skill level 😅
Hi @CloudPandarism, I do kind of agree with you, I do just like flying with the radio turned off and just flying listening to music and enjoying the views. But sometimes to see really cool stuff, you have to use a radio.
I flew in a 2 seater in a loop from east fortune over the airport the bridges and my house, then up to 4000 feet to cross the forth at Leven to the bass rock one of the best experiences I’ve ever had!
Hi Steven, I can only just imagine how amazing that must have been. It's definitely a beautiful area to fly, I just wished we had more time to enjoy it on our adventure.
You jammy, jammy bar-stewards! Wonderful, thank you
Hi Rose, we were very lucky and it was a wonderful experience as well.
Brilliant video, excellent watch. Your expression and comments at the end summed it all up! 👍😎
Hi Tim, there aren't many thank can understand the frustration of loosing video content and audio. It is always hard to articulate the true feelings and emotions.
Stunning, just stunning Giles. What a day, with fantastic views.
Hi Alan, it was just one of those days that memories are made from.
Excellent 💜👍✌️😊
Hi Muso, good to see you back. Glad you enjoyed it.
Wow, what a cool flight. Lots going on and those views!
Hi Mark, I still have to pinch myself what we managed to achieve on that day and then to top it off with this flight. The last episode of our adventures will be out tomorrow, fingers crossed.
Top effort Giles and team. That would melt my brain all that radio traffic.
Hi Ben, I kept having my old work RT creap in. It was a wonderful trip. Still makes me smile thinking back to it.
Good to hear I am not the only one to get a bit tongue tied when I having a lot on with the radio. Allway love flying over airliners taking off, have had that a few times at Norwich airport. Love Ben scooting down the hill 🙂
Yep, definitely a lot going on. Ben kept us entertained... A lot over the 3 days. 😉.
Nice video thanks. I have been to the top of the South tower on the Forth road bridge, that was a great experience too
Hi Bill, oh wow, I bet that was a really cool view.
You guys are just plain crazy…… but OMG it looks like sooooooo much fun.
I'll take the crazy part. When are you joining us? 😁
Great vid. At this point I can only dream of such a great adventure.

Hi Patrick, I hope it doesn't make it difficult.

Not at all -- at this point I live vicariously through other pilots. Which in turn inspires me.

Awesome video. Flying over airliners taking off must have been a real pinch me moment. Good job with the RT Giles. I’d have been crapping myself!! And your video confirms what we all suspected which is that Ben Ashman could use a check up from the neck up!! Enjoyed that one. 👍
No cuff too tough. Apparently they are really accommodating so I didn't need to worry as much as I did.
Well done Giles, Mark and Ben. So cool and inspiring for the rest of us 😊👍
Hi David, if it can be done in a Peabee, your Gyro should have no issues. The owner of Troutbeck has a Gyro.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 yes, need to sort some adventures soon 😊
Had me spellbound , great stuff . You handled the pressure like a true pro Giles !!!

Hi Fly swamper, thank for joining us on this journey.
I would have been near wetting myself having to fly in that much civilization. In 185 miles I would see more Pronghorn antelope than people where I live. Good job on the radio Giles! That was cool flying over the jets.
Hi Tom, it certainly was one of those trips that you only realise what you've done afterwards. Still makes me smile now. I hope all is well over the pond?

I can't improve on the excellent comments above so I'll just say great radio work Giles & the castle joke doesn't play over here. LOL
Excellent video as usual. 👍
HI Doug, on the previous video, Mark called Stirling Castle Edinburgh Castle. Glad you enjoyed it buddy.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Ahh, thanks.
Giles & Mark, Of your Balado or Bust videos I have enjoyed this one the most because it covered my " Local Patch "
There was nothing wrong with your Zone Transit & your RT was bordering on perfection ;-)
I totally get the 'Wow' factor because I feel privileged that I am able to get a Zone Transit across every time I request it ( never in 23yrs have they declined me a Transit ).
Even after 23yrs of flying in the Edinburgh Area have I ever not been in awe of the City views ;-)
Edinburgh ATC are possibly one of the best ATC units for accommodating GA & Microlight Traffic in their Zone. ( I live under the Zone near the Ski Slope, pretty sure you would have seen it abeam your Starboard wingtip just before passing the Castle.
Thank you for your kind words Peter and finally put the face to the name. Sorry we didn't get more time to speak but time was definitely against once the plan came together.
Luvly Jubbly 😀 ...
I just realised ... "you can fly in rain" 😉 ... I can't 🥲
Yes you can but you have to be careful if it still wet when you come into land.
Fabulous Giles, really interesting watching you guys navigating your way through air traffic and the views going over the bridges was incredible, you’ve definitely got some bottle you guys I think it’s absolutely mint what you’ve achieved 👏👏👏
I can even hear you saying the word "mint". You've done scarier things during lessons. You'll be coming on one of the Grand Tours before you know. It.
Can’t wait Giles, it going to be FLIPPIN MINT mate 🙏
What fun series you put together Giles. Quite the journey and beautiful country for sure. Thoroughly enjoyed it ! Thanks for taking us along !
HI Allan, good to see you in the comments. I hope all it will. It was a brilliant trip and experienced so much more that I even dreamed of.
Great video guys......So happy to hear you treated well by ATC...... just great stuff👍... thanks for sharing
They did treat us very well indeed and the experience was one I will remember.
Amazing.
It really was a fun flight. The whole trip was awesome but this stage was just breathtaking, despite the radio workload.
That was amazing, thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Watty, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It still brings back a smile thinking of this flight.

Hello David, it was a very special flight, more so because I was flying in lose formation with friends.
Fantastic... you flew all around my home area..... born and bred in Musselburgh..... know East Fortune well... done many circuits round there with my father, who sadly passed away at East Fortune Hospital..... but fond memories none the less.... thank you.....
Hi Steve, was it a nice surprise to see Musselburgh in the video?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 It was indeed..... instantly brought back lots of fond memories..... I've been down in North Bucks since 1978..... not quite the same! lol

Definitely wow, wow and wow again, that gave me goosebumps just watching. Impressive and busy radio work, it reminded me of Sywell on a quiet day 😂🤣 but seriously, what an achievement that will without doubt stay with you guys for a very long time. Ps maybe stop feeding Ben (E) numbers on the next adventure 😂 Awesome!
Hi Ian, and now the adventures can begin for you as well.
I think you captured that really well Giles, the radio calls, flying over a capital city ect. I carry a chinagraph pencil and have it at the ready when talking to air traffic for any frequency change I’m not expecting. Saying “say again” three times is embarrassing. Has Ben not been taking his medication? Looking forward to the next one 👍
I'm not sure what Ben has been taking but I want what he's on. I do actually have a China graph pencil in my normal knee board but it doesn't work with the map board. Glad you enjoyed it buddy.
Excellent job on the ATC chatter Giles. Those guys rattle away and I can't always understand what they are saying/asking (from the comfort of a passenger seat)!
Hi NSM3, the audio in the video was somewhat better than the volume and clarity that I could hear while flying and I did struggle to hear a lot of it. The joy of the edit ;)
Bloody Awesome, must be the best to date so far - love the RT. Sorry, can't put any words to this one . . . . . .

Hi Chris, it certainly was a wonderful experience, still brings a smile now thinking back.
Great video, Giles, watched it on my new OLED tv. Really shows off the quality. The twisted strap was bugging me, though! Looked pretty intense over Edinburgh, I can see why the others must have been happy to let you do the calls.
Hi Nick, I hope the TV made the difference. I was annoyed I hadn't spotted the strap also. I certainly earned my tea that night for the radio work.
Zone transit just like I practiced on the FRTOL course - well done, and an amazing flight.
Hi Gareth, it was my first ever zone transit and my radio course was a long time ago. It certainly kept me on my toes when they modified the route.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I know someone that works as an ATCO at EPGH and can confirm they are very nice :)
I know of one chap called Kieran who was at Edinburgh ATC, that was on shift the day we were transiting through.
Bloody awesome chaps!
I once flew over Newquay airport in my mosquito whilst a plane took off - it was pretty cool - It looked like a little toy!
Hi Dave, yes, it did look like a toy plane. I bet flying around Newquay was impressive in a Mosquito?
Such an awesome series! The radio work can be a bit daunting the first few times but you did a stellar job. As long as ATC can understand the gist of what you are doing, that's what matters 🤣. I've always found Edinburgh ATC to be lovely folk and are very accommodating. Cheers for including my comms in as well 😁
Hi Stephen, I couldn't not put your comms in, you were part of the trip. It was about all off us. I think there was a tiny clip with you in it, right at the beginning. Oh congratulations on getting your 3 axis.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Yeah, at 0:33 you got Sim, Rab and myself in shot! It was really cool doing the radio for the 3 of us going into the zone behind you. 3-axis training was great fun and I'm now sharing a Skyranger as well as having the Peabee (which is now SSDR; thanks for the persuasion to get that done 😂)
Haha, it's the cheapest flights hours you'll ever get.
Great stuff. Did a similar thing some years ago in a group of 5 light aircraft. We flew in stages to the top of Norway and on another trip down to Casablanca. It really was great fun, but you’ve got to be prepared for dodgy weather and IMC on occasion. There is also a lot of water to cross on occasion.
Hi John, glad you enjoyed it. It was very memorable. I can relate to the water bit as I'm not a fan of large expanses of water.
Many years ago a group of us in flex wings got permission to fly over Gatwick , was a weird feeling seeing all the Boeing’s stacked above us !!

So sorry to have missed you Giles! I was there yesterday. I flew to Compton Abbas. On homeward leg had complete electric failure west of EGBM and just managed to get a radio call in to B’ham Approach and granted permission to go direct to Tatenhill via their airspace before my radio died. Had no gear switch, so had to use emergency gear lever, no flaps and no radio to announce my arrival. A bit hairy, but all ok in the end.
I’m sure these things come along to test us!
Sorry I missed you. Hopefully we’ll catch up at some stage.

Welcome to Scotland, you can do more here 👍
Hi Colin, it was a shame we only had less than a day in Scotland.
You must install the sparkplug that does not interfere with the radio signal. I've done it a while back with my trike and it works beautifully. Keep up with the awesome videos ❤
Hi Phil, glad you are enjoying the videos. My trike doesn't have too many issues but Mark's and Ben's do. The biggest issue I had, was due to my mic being live all the time, I hear all the engine noise so I was struggling to hear their calls a few times.

Rain, low cloud, wind during transits. That sounds slightly similar to FlyUK!
2000ft... luxury!
Almost the same but a lot slower. The distances of FlyUK always put me off.
@GolfFoxtrot22 doable, but yes, a little more wind penetrating speed makes a difference.
One day.
Thanks for that 😎.... took me back to my days 20 years ago as a PPL (H) when I used to transit VFR around that area .... your views on the camera were almost exactly the same as I used to enjoy (except now there is another bridge!) . The radio calls were always the bit that I had to really plan/prepare for ... especially on the odd occasion when they told me to remain outside of the area 🤪. I am based in Fife and often watch machines like yours flying overhead..... sort of tickling my interest a bit .... 🤔
Hi Rod, I'm glad the video brought back so good memories. I did struggle with the radio calls as I couldn't always hear them clearly. 12.03, I can see my House from there. Cheers guys
Hi Mike, I'm glad we caught your house on our journey. This video seems to have been viewed by quite a few from the area.
I see some guys flying right along the water line over Prestonpans. Would love to try it sometime or pay for a pleasure flight. I use to be part of Edinburgh helicopters (years ago) ground safety team when we use to set up the landing field at the British open golf and marshal in the choppers (busiest airport in britain during the open golf, they use to say. Some great flights with ex Army air Corp pilots, nutters all of them. Enjoy your flights chaps.
09:00 I’ve heard many pilots recommend doing this. As long as you are prepared and proficient of course.
We'd spoken to the local pilots, and I contacted atc on the phone beforehand. There is always a first time for everything so the only thing I was proficient at was flying and talking on the radio 😁. I hope you enjoyed our little adventure.
WOW! This is your best video ever, Giles. I’m so pleased you covered all those radio calls - that was such a lot to take on board. And your graphic ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this’ made me grin. But I could really appreciate how awesome you all must have felt - passing over jets taking off, and Edinburgh’s conurbation with so few land-outs (thank goodness Mark’s spark plug cap didn’t come off then!). So one question - if you had known all you had to deal with before you left Balado, would you still have set off? And if so, would you have been worried? Cheers. John
Hi John, I enjoyed your last video, when I saw your hands come off the bar, I was willing you to retract your gear. To answer your question, I think with flights like this, you just break the flight down to parts and deal with them as they crop up, but also planning before what you need to do. I knew where I was going, what I needed to say ( with a few exceptions), but the flying part is just second nature, so that takes that part of the stress away. In hindsight I really enjoyed the challenge.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 … even so, I am very impressed, especially as you took the lead on that leg! As for my wheels - after such a long lay-off (7 weeks), my confidence had definitely slipped . Let’s hope the jet stream moves and lets in some better weather. All the best. John

Hi and welcome to the channel. the aircraft that I am flying is a Flylight Peabee. Mark is flying a modified version called a Raptor. I hope that helps. The link to the Flylight company is in the video description. I hope you enjoyed the video series on the Low and Slow to Balado.
At what altitude did you fly through Edinburgh airspace?
Just below 2000ft we wanted as much glide range as possible.
nice video. I have transited busy airfields many times in light aircraft but to do it in it with the handheld radio, no transponder and nowhere to put your pen is really impressive. Do you need to comply with land clear rules in this type of aircraft?
Hi Chris, it did help having spoken to my them on the phone beforehand and writing all the frequencies on my chart before hand. It just threw me slightly when they rerouted on handover. Yes we do still have to abide by the land clear rule so we were picking fields and golf courses as we flew along. I hope you enjoyed the other videos that cover the whole adventure? What?! Is this a Europe specific thing? I need to look up the rules, but isn't this not allowed in the US? Transiting through class B and C airspace in a trike that is, and I presume class D too.
Yes Class D and is allowed in the UK. If you watch the video we were under ATC control.
The more I watch your videos the more I want to stop ppl lessons and do flex wing nppl
Hi Deon, it's all about what you want at the end. I couldn't afford to run/hire or buy on the PPL level, but NPPL gave me so many more of options of fixed wing or Flex, all on the same licence.
Do you know of any Training companies for Ultralights in Yorkshire? i can find microlight and i can find paratrikes but not ultralights in Yorkshire.
Hi Martin, microlight and ultralight are the same thing. The word ultralight is not used in the UK, it's more of an American and European term. I hope that helps. Are you looking to fly flexwing or 3 axis?
@GolfFoxtrot22 My father is doing licences, and getting hours in a microlight a full-bodied plane also I will say that is stupid American and European so the UK are just wrong then the rest of the world agreeses on a term and we don't...
@@GolfFoxtrot22 The UK's decision to deviate from globally accepted terminology seems ridiculous; it encompasses a category that ranges from parachutes to fully-bodied planes only in the UK. There is a microlight facility in Sherburn, yet they operate solid-bodied aircraft.
@@MartinBarker I think it comes more down to the Air Navigation Order and definitions. Have you tried looking at the BMAA website for schools?
@@MartinBarker It really wasn't a "decision to deviate from globally accepted terminology." Before 1981 the Americans had started getting very keen on adding engines to their hang-gliders, they called them ultralights. The trend was beginning to spread in the UK, and the Civil Aviation Authority was getting very concerned about the safety of the rising numbers of unregulated (and therefore illegal) flying machines. They introduced a category of aircraft lighter than the existing light aircraft category and made aircraft registrations (e.g. G-MBCG - my machine's registration issued in 1981) compulsory. The term ultralight was already in use in the UK, so the name microlight was coined. At the time, many believed that these aircraft were legal, but the under Air Navigation Order, they were defined as powered aircraft. It was just that the Civil Aviation Authority chose not to prosecute and to allow the new type of leisure aviation to develop.
I'm going to start watching this video assuming you're in contact with air traffic control. I'm going to stop watching it when I discover I've assumed wrong.
A zone transit can only be conducted with ATC approval or we'd end up in court.
Do you foreigners live in Scotland.
Hello Colin, unfortunately not. If you look for the other videos in this series (only 5), you will see we departed from Darley Moor Airfield in Derbyshire. I hope you enjoy the other videos.
I had my general aviation license flying from a control zone. It is one of the reasons sub 70kg appeals to me, it stops me entering that mess: Tango Charlie Oscar request permission to scratch an itch? Negative Tango Charlie Oscar stay in the holding pattern till you break into a sweat. Copy that control in the holding pattern reporting back when sweating... 😖 They were the coolest of views though, I'll show my family we were there just before Covid, I recognized the Edinburgh firth of forth bridge 😎👍
Hi Blue, yes I can see why you wouldn't want to regularly fly from a control Zone. Did you have a good time in Edinburgh? That so spooky that you'd been there as well.
You are the sods that keep flyin over my garden like somethng out the wizard of bloody oz ..gie me a bloody breack ..turn yer engines off ..float to freedom...take up hand glinding and flap to freedom..land in ma garden if need be ...but stop poluting ma air wae fumes and noise...PLEASE.
Why are these clowns flying anywhere near an airport
Because they needed to get to the other side, and they can.
That’s a bit of a rude comment. What’s wrong with you?
