Using solar lights is a great idea! I love the romantic look of outdoor string lights at night. I really want to add poles to my deck to hang lights on too! Thanks for sharing Wendi!

Great job! I used cement planters to fix the PVC pipe in gravel at the bottom and planting soil on top. That way the lights can be moved to different areas easily. Be sure to select planters with a wide bottom and place on a cement block or firm soil. The lights and poles can be installed or removed easily. Adding flowers, greenery or ivy helps the planters blend into the landscape. Use heavier pipe or keep the height lower to prevent the PVC pipe from bending due to heat or winds.

Thank you! We fell in love with the view and the house was a mess which was perfect for what I wanted.. The PVC string light poles are perfect, lightweight, inexpensive and yes removable for storms.

Wouldnt these pvc pipes bend over time? You mentioned they are 7 feet above ground, but what is the total length pvc pole that you used for the actual pole part that goes into the other in the ground? Thanks

I'm not sure if I missed this or it's not even mentioned in the video. The pole that's going in the ground is 1 1/2" x 4ft , what about the when the lights are actually hanging from? I imagine 1 3/4" - 2" x 10ft ?
HI, Good question. I believe I answer this in my blog post. You can make the poles as tall as you'd like. You'll want to be sure the poles you choose fit inside the sleeve that will be in the secured in the ground.
@@WendiWachtelH2OBungalow thank you. I’m actually wondering about the size of the opening, not the height. So the pole that goes in the ground is 1 1/2”, the ones where the lights hang from should be 2”?

How did you manage to get the 1.25" pipe to fit inside the 1.5" pipe?
The OD of my 1.25" pipe is 1.660" and the ID of my 1.5" pipe is 1.593" - as far as I can tell this is industry standard. Some how you managed to find ~0.07"
Not sure... I found it at Home depot and one fit perfectly inside of the other. I made sure before I brought them home. You can use different sizes than I did. As long as they fit inside of each other and have the strength to hold the string lights.
did you strike water digging 3 feet?

I lost what I was using to a tornado. Wanting to do it better. I looked at PVC like you but find that the lengths are not straight. How do you keep pvc posts from warping. Love the idea of placing a removal system during storms - but I still can't get past thinking 8' pvc will warp or bend due to heat or elements? Please post - looking for advice.
One third of the length is underground , so it shouldn't bend. Good luck, I know you can do it.

Hi- It's actually been about 2-3 years and the poles have held up fantastically! I've changed the lights once since because we were flooded in a storm. Otherwise it's been trouble free!

You used 1 1/2 pvc pole and cemented into ground but which pole did you use to fit into the pole in the ground?

We tried to doing what you did but strung them in W shape but the lights we’re to heavy and it caused the poles to bow.☹️
Hmm.. Either the lights you used were too heavy or your poles were too thin or long. Ours have been up for about 3+ yers now and still work great!
