Such a heart touching story. As hard as those miners had to work there should not have been families struggling for food, clothes, shoes or anything else they needed. They should have been paid enough to have at least the basics in life. That's just not right. What a good man he was. I am sure that he had a great reward in heaven. Thanks for sharing, Donnie! Hope you have a great weekend and God bless!
Had neighbor who daughter went to school barefoot her daddy an ol miner it broke my heart it was one room School house I shared only other pair shoes I had told my mamma there's a young girl with no shoes I didn't want her feet to get cold I could tell she was embarrassed ain't nothing about being poor to be embarrassed about may not been best shoes but she was mighty glad
Thanks for keeping the memory of Ol Buck and his family alive. As sad as this story was, life must go on . God works in mysterious ways , one thing for sure when you know Christ as savior and Lord, we will see our love ones again . God gave him a purpose in making a difference in the life of others. There is nothing in this life more important than being used by God and making a difference in the life of others. We are a bright and shining light to this world. Thank you Donnie for letting your light shine and making a difference in my life and the lives of many each and every day. God bless you brother.
I’m from a little coal town in southeast Ky. We had one such man and his wife in our little town. He too had been hurt in the mines and couldn’t work. Family and friends did his gardening and helped them with the canning. My dad and his brothers kept them in firewood and coat. This was the late 50s and early 60s. We all called him Big Nickel because his family name was Nickols. He would never let any family go without anything. Money for rent, food, clothing, it didn’t matter what the need was. But his greatest joy came from making toys and and fixing toys for all the kids, myself included. I think sometimes that’s where my wife and I got the burden on our hearts to do what little we could to help others. Now that we’re old our greatest joy is watching those we have touched along the way now helping others as we did. I think back to those times and thank God that he gave us Big Nickel, and how it shaped our lives.
Heart warming story Donnie, you have a wonderful heritage and knowledge of the coal miners life, and we thank you for sharing it with us 🙂.Take Care Friend and God Bless.
Mr Jason C., Donnie's videos are wonderfull; ever' bit as wonderful as the toys Ol' Buck whittled for the Children. One good Man, consistently an' faithfully making Life more pleasant for Many. And Mr Donnie Laws..., I got to hand it You, Friend...; You're not only a Story Teller, You're a pretty good "Sound Man" and "Special Effects Man", too. In this video, We hear that terrible rumblin' sound and see the Earth shaking as part of the mine gives way... Well and realistically made, Donnie! Just like Buck's hand carved toys. 🙂 Rick Bonner Pennsyltucky

My grandpa worked in the mines in Delbarton, West Virginia. Momma has always shared memories of her childhood. Hard living. But she said it made them strong.
Thank you for bringing this fine man’s story back to life. How many thousands more like this have faded away. Your telling of them is more important than many can imagine. Ooh Mr Laws! This story touched my heart so! Made me cry. I remember my parents and others talking about the coal mines and hard times. Even today there are families & others struggling to keep food on the table and clothes on their backs. I remember when I was growing up on our farm, I’d always get some other girls hand-me-downs to wear. The other kids at school would laugh at me & make fun of me. But my mama kept me & my clothes clean….even though they were used! Thank you for sharing! A lot of folks back then had soft hearts & true grit!! Blessings always! ❤️✝️
