it was my favorite because of the mystical and wondrous nature of seeing someone with an exotic and being like “wtf? i’ve never seen that? where’d he get that?” and getting different exotics was a unique stamp on your character. i had the insurmountable skullfort as my first armor exotic and i had people all over me all the time asking me where i got it and that it looks so cool. THAT’s why Y1 was my favorite. different weapons and exotics felt exciting to just see on someone else. also another favorite thing of mine is the rarity of exotics. i could go a whole week of doing nightfall, and both raids on all 3 characters and not get an exotic. but when an exotic would drop? i’d lose my shit, didn’t matter if it was a universal remote or an ice breaker. i just loved the feeling of the new mysterious world where nobody knew anything at all

What I would like to see is all the content from D1 and D2 available to play again, all in one client. Not even all the seasonal stuff, I just mean all the campaigns, all the planets. Mars, Venus, Dreadnought, Io, etc. The Red War campaign, the Taken King campaign.
If we're going to bring back old stuff, let's put it in the context of the current game. I think the game /plays/ the best its ever played right now, and I wouldn't want to go back to inferior gameplay. But I would like to go back to having all the content available.

Ofc transmog would be nice ect but it took them what 6 yrs to do for D2 I can’t see big changes happening without way too many resources being diverted.
Also a port of the game and some fixes for current gen consoles would be far less expensive to purchase as a consumer than a remaster (which idk what they would remaster most of D1s assets other than its lighting (which I think looks better in a lot of cases in D1 therefore don’t want changed) r the exact same quality.

I'd really like a Destiny 1 remastered, not because I miss the D1 content, but instead because I miss the feeling of Destiny 1 (and I don't think that's just nostalgia talking)
Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 are *very* different games at this point. D2 is basically a full-on MMO with a major focus on abilities, builds and super chaotic gameplay, where as D1 is more of a shooter with some light RPG elements, and it's just way less complex overall.
Don't get me wrong, I obviously love the power fantasy and buildcrafting in D2, but i also miss the simplicity and vibe (both in gameplay and art direction) of D1. Destiny 2 can almost be a bit TOO much at times imo.

I still remember D1 exotic Khovostov quest where we got a heart to heart with Ghost, Touch of Malice quest was a great way to boost Eris's Hive Magic proficiency in the player's eyes and give an incentive to play the raid, all of the exotic swords were memorable in part because you had to collect the powerful components required to build them but also in part because of the infamous legendary material grind. Iron Gjallarhorn/Gjallarhorn rebuilt was a quest where you learned about the lore behind the weapon. Now D2 exotic quests are rather forgettable with most of them being "Go to point A, kill some guys, go to NPC to talk, go to point B to kill more guys, talk to NPC again, go do mission/strike, talk to NPC and claim gun"

You generally take more damage when doing this as you're closer to enemies, bigger enemies do a generally unavoidable aoe stomp, with some bosses now even doing fire stomps that does absurd damage, explosive enemies like cursed thrall and screebs already exist, ~~melee hitreg is still pisspoor at times~~, etc. Adding yet another way to kill melee builds feels awful.

Interest in Destiny is low now since the big bad is dead, we have so much stuff now the experience is now stale, loot incentive is important but unless the experience of getting that loot is fun most are not pushed to jump on anymore for marginally better loot. A fresh start is needed but we know Destiny vanilla launches are never good.

-if bungie doesn't at least make it a little more difficult to grind for red borders, they should take away the enhancement aspect for perks. Forces you to play endgame. Haven't touched SE since I got the exotic and all the red borders.

-Bungie struggles with D2, fuck no they shouldn't come out with a D Classic

Transcendence is just so fun though, an extra way to stay alive, refund abilities, squeeze out some extra damage, use a unique grenade. The other subclasses just feel a bit empty without it. I would prefer if they added more grenade to the darkness subclasses, because they are missing a lot of straight up damage grenades that the light subclasses have. I could also see them adding some sort of pseudo-transcendence for the normal subclasses, where it is built by dealing damage matching your subclass and provides the same DR, ability regen, and extra weapon damage that transcendence does but without the custom grenade.

I think the way Bungo could’ve done weapon crafting in a better way is to have enhanced traits on ONLY the random dropped weapons. So you can go and craft your god roll and if you are happy enough, great, you’re done. But if you want that “JUICER M’GOOSER GOD ROLL” then you still have to grind for that 5/5 to drop, then you can enhance the traits for the little cost that it currently takes, or hell maybe even up the cost and make the enhanced versions a little more nutty

Weak fix I thought of for crafting weapons
Crafting the weapon is unlocked immediately from the 1st red border you get of that weapon, but instead of the usual level up and select the perks you want from the preset menu, you'll unlock the other barrels/mags/perks through getting more red borders
Basically, when you get a red border, the perks on that red border will get unlocked for that weapon's crafting menu
In theory you can still get the god roll you want or pretty stinking close, but now there's a smidgeon of rng thrown in as to how many red borders you'll need to get all the perks you want unlocked so you can go make your 5/5 roll
More than anything it makes the crafting system more like a pity net instead of a flat guarantee
(srry in advance if my wording is stinky)

Couple things comes to mind directly such as giving void subclass barricade same ability as unbreakable, Solar titan baricade can explode up taking enough damage to create random healing bubbles in the area where you can run and grab those while arc titan barricade can jolt anything that comes near it. I dont think this is a hard implementation considering they are already assests in the game so that we actually have another playstyle rather than just punch stuff.

What Destiny *really* needs is change to it's content licensing, because having access to *all* content (even only on a single platform) in D2 requires buying a dizzying mess of SKUs. When someone (very rarely) asks me about starting Destiny I literally have no clue how to tell them to start. Early in Lightfall I had a friend start and I literally had to start a new account just to see what the hell was going on for new players.

When it comes to hot swapping, I think would be fine if load outs wasn't a thing. Inventory management is a higher level skill that you see in other games, its just loadout takes the skill out of it because it's just open your menu, press a button and a click. Like watch a Chasethebro video where he invades other people in Elden Ring and you can see him rapidly swap weapons to fit the scenario hes in or armour pieces to get better healing. That is a higher tier of gameplay that the normal person can't do but if Fromsoft added something similar to loadouts to Elden Ring then anyone would be able to do it.

Here’s some real hot take: Crafting should only allow you to change barrel, mag, and masterwork. Weapon perks should always be rng with enhanced perks only coming from enhancing weapons.
People unwilling to engage with the game should not have powerful gear. Bungie should focus on improving the grind instead of giving ways to circumvent it.
Content droughts are good as it allows time for people to catch up without missing out on stuff and take breaks without missing temporary things.

Especially since they can adapt the worlds in a new engine, new UI from D2, keeping the same weapons, keeping the d2 quality of life and also making the locations more diverse in terms of what activities you can find, do and what secrets you could find. It can really be improved upon with the content that was cut and now can be adapted for a complete overhaul of the experience we should have received in 2014.

To speak to the loadout swapping comment I actually do think its a huge negative on the mid level raiders who like to try throwing their hat in the ring to complete a raid/dungeon on contest. My friends and I are decent competent raiders but bungie has to develop contest modes around the people who are able and willing to play the menu minigame as you call it to min max an extra 5% damage per phase meaning the bosses need to be stronger to take that as a result. This means that players who probably could beat a raid normally on contest in the past with a couple meta builds have to contend with it being harder than usual simply due to the fact that they aren't able to do those loadout swaps for the extra damage and can't swap between each class on a whim with 30 different min maxed loadouts.

Crafting included enhanced perks as a core part of the system. It would not be the same without it.
For now, I think Bungie found an okay solution that makes endgame players happy. Raid adepts can be enhanced and have multiple perks. Adept weapons have always been more of a flex anyway, so I am fine with that. Let normal people craft, because not everyone is grinding raids for months.
It is unfortunate how anti-crafting you are, Datto. Some people play the game to get weapons. Other people get weapons to *go play other parts of the game*. We can have both crowds satisfied: most weapons that come out in a year are crafted anyway. You guys are destroying Joe Blackburn's legacy by walking back everything he did to make the game more appealing to casual players and players who cannot or do not want to grind the game like a second job.

Modifiers in games typically fall into the categories of either being insignificant or making some part of the gameplay loop worse. Blackout is an example of the former whereas Grounded is an example of the latter. Most people don't even notice when Blackout is on whereas Grounded adds cheap one-shots when forced to go aerial. Modifiers can provide nuance when they have interesting effects that encourage specific playstyles, but how much nuance does arbitrarily making players take more damage when they're not on the ground add? Next to nothing, it only feels cheap. Counterfeit does not provide nuance to the gameplay of Destiny, all it does is consolidate the already popular playstyles while making the struggling ones even worse. Defaulting to more difficulty = good is not particularly insightful. You have to consider if the difficulty added makes the game more enjoyable rather than just adding a degree or feeling of randomness to it.
Banes I do find bring some degree of nuance to gameplay as they change how you play in a way that is interesting and doesn't just feel cheap and arbitrary. Though I find it mostly just ends up being a case of "kill the thing with a bane first" due to their current implementation. Tormentors are a perfect example of making the game more difficulty and nuanced in a enjoyable way that doesn't feel cheap.
Modifiers do have the advantage of being easy to implement, and are not necessarily always bad, but it typically isn't considered if the change they bring is enjoyable. Most often they are just shoehorned to fulfill the task of adding replayability to a game. I felt this the most with Helldivers 2 and its modifiers where most didn't change how you play the game in any way, except the one that reduced the amount of stratagems you can bring. All it ended up doing was forcing meta picks and ironically reducing the amount of replayability. All this is not to say modifiers are necessarily bad, but without deep consideration as to how they impact gameplay, they most likely will be.

Weapon crafting is the best thing in destiny 2, I don't care for grinding for time locked content to get a decent role. Uncraftable weapons eats vault space, it lowers the amount of weapons I can even afford to care about, it's part of a larger issue for sure and weapon crafting was the *perfect* solution to help mediate the problem or vault space, time dedicated to grinding content people didn't want to.
Hell the weapons it makes sense to let be craftable ARE the timelocked FOMO weapons like seasonal weapons so the fact Bungie opted OUT of making Revenant weapons crafted is crazy to me.
Also I'm entirely of the opinion that RNG is one of the worst things in gaming, luck mechanics that could actually lock you out of a role forever in the worst case scenario sucks, crafting eliminating that entirely makes it personally the single best thing D2 ever added.

However, my counter argument to that is the artifact mods. A good portion of them this season are around melee / finishers, suggesting they are encouraging this playstyle but will punish you at the same time.
I don't know where I land on the nerfs to counterfeit as I don't tend to play an up-close melee / finisher build. However, I find it frustrating when the few times I do use melee it basically turns a random enemy into a surprise screeb. I personally don't find it challenging, just frustrating.

These features being a character usually being in a certain spot helping you with whatever they were helping you with if in the next campaign they've moved on and are now doing something else entirely (or have died). And no sunsetting of weapons or areas. Will this be massive? Yes. And when the shift from Destiny to Destiny 2 happens in this hypothetical DCE whatever original cut scene we saw way back when Destiny 2 launched that explained why we're no longer in the original tower....I want to see that too. And I want all of this back story and information to be easily accessible in some kind of an archive searchable by topics.

I think those quests worked when they did because there was SO MUCH other stuff to do. If those quests are the main thing to do, or if they comprise more than 1% of the total content on offer... then people start to get really grumpy really quickly.
Alternatively, they would need to release that kind of content for free so that paid players don't feel like they're paying for stuff they can't do.
But something I think the game could absolutely do better is to find a way to tier out rewards so that players have aspirational goals to chase

Commenting before the video: There's a shrinking list of meaningful content that is available exclusively in Destiny 1 - Venus, Mars, the Dreadnaught, Plaguelands, Campaigns, Wrath of the Machine, and a dwindling list of weapons (IMO if they brought back the Ice Breaker in a healthy state the way it is today, no weapon is functionally off the table for a D2 variant). And who knows if the Episode content (noting specifically the Prison of Elders and teased Dreadnaught return) will be staying in the new era of Destiny. I may be speaking for a smaller group of people than I think but having recently reset one of my D1 characters to replay the game, I think a lot of people miss the sense of progression, starting from nothing and getting that first elemental weapon (the first special ammo weapons you got were kinetic), that first green or blue or purple and even Exotic drop.
The only thing I think would be worthwhile for a Destiny Classic would be 60 fps and the port to PC. Beyond that, I think you would see a lot of disagreement on what should be modernized and what should be kept as is (do we add mantling? Do we add class abilities? Do we keep loadouts as Kinetic/Primary + Energy/Special + Heavy, or do we change them to the modern Kinetic + Energy + Heavy? Do we keep Raids the same? Do we make the Elemental Primary weapons from Raids Legendary, or Exotic like they were in Year 3?). And that is not to mention the workload that would strain a company that has already faced two rounds of layoffs - the best hope from a feasibility standpoint is a NetEase-like situation where a third party pays a huge lump sum to Bungie for the rights to do it - and how hands on would Bungie be in this process?

The mechanics thing is so real. I loved Final Shape but haven’t hardly touched the game since I finished because after playing so much Destiny for a decade I’m just burnt out on it. Actually seeing some of what Destiny Rising is doing differently (minus the gotcha stuff) seems refreshing in retrospect, if Destiny Rising has success Bungie could maybe take a couple lessons from it

I don't think they should do a Destiny Classic server, but I do think they should integrate all the old content and just call the game Destiny. Combine the Timeline and Legacy menus, let people play every campaign, and boil down each season's content to its core story & missions. If it's a file size issue, either rotate through old seasons progressively, background delete cutscenes after they've been played, and/or let people install and uninstall specific DLC one at a time.

I'mma be real: we're never going to get that high fantasy with future tech feeling Destiny was bleeding in it's early days before and just after it's release, even if it really shone through in a lot of it's high moments, and that's why I'm left so wanting whenever I think of Destiny in general. I don't think a simple "give us back the things we used to have" will do a good job of recapturing that. We've come too far to sidestep so many years of narrative fumbles so easily.
That's where the magic has always been for me. The context of the game elevating the handful of simple things into a sum magnitudes greater than all it's parts. I can STILL go back to the Dreaming City and feel a bit of that trickle down my spine, even though by now I've seen all it has to offer gameplay-wise. I REALLY felt that Arthurian influence guiding the writer's hand when I picked up Ergo Sum after knowing it's image for years. It's a large reason I tried to limit myself to the highs I could almost always bank on: MSQ's, Raids, dungeons. Content that reinforced the feeling that the universe was so much larger than it actually was, so much larger than it really allowed itself to be.
I'm a patient gamer; I can be satisfied with the small sips of meaningful worldbuilding and story that come my way even when the mechanics of it's surrounding gameplay don't really change all that much (hell, I've played Warframe for years, I've been trained to expect that). But when that context falls so far behind in quality that I'm left wondering if the people in charge even actually care about their child the same way I do, It's much less painful to let all those feelings just fade away. Better than letting all these new things I don't like ruin those memories if things I did.

Datto you said it in your Thoughts Going Into 2021 video(I would love a retrospective on that video, it still holds up), "innovation in Destiny cannot just be more Destiny", something people just eventually tolerate going through the motions and the needle doesn't move doesn't work for any long haul.
Sure 10 years from launch of the series we can acknowledge fully Destiny always was going to have some form of limitations especially riding on the old decrepit skeleton of the engine it exists on, BUT we've been hard stuck on the threshold of bigger potential basically indefinitely. Not saying the game hasn't gotten better but with the amount of outstanding basic QOL stuff still not fixed or addressed, it feels like we'll just continue to limp on with minor tweaks at best.
Hyping up little tweaks is not innovation and nothing's final til it's in the game, but the teasings of Frontiers has me ungodly cautious and I think it'll really be another cause for people to check out further. Nobody wants to pay the same price for less content.

the dude that said destiny's game modes are repetitive is spot on. it largely feels that ever new expansion is just the same expansion but with a slightly different skin. even the story dialog on a week to week basis is just "good work on killing those *whatever enemy we're fighting this time*, but now i need you to go do that again so we can charge the *insert macguffin* "
im SURE its hard to keep coming up with new cool shit but i feel like ive been loosely playing the same shit for years with the VERY occasional mix up

All that is needed is to finish undoing the DCV, since TFS already started the process by undoing weapon sunsetting, and reprising WotM and porting all of the D1 campaigns/strikes.

The only thing I want is for some other company to make D1 playable on PC at 60 frames. That’s all that needs to happen. The game will probably be gorgeous as is at 60 frames.

I think Counterfeit is fine in Legend+ content (or whatever they're calling it now) but not in Vanguard Ops/heroic NFs (especially Vanguard Ops), since it's geared towards newer players that likely won't know what modifiers even are. It was also not recognizable during gameplay that ammo bricks are what's blowing up - that should also be more obvious.

I'm playing Destiny 1 right now. You can too. It's like $20 now.
Honestly one of the reasons that D1 is good 10 years from its launch is because there's only DLCs and not any seasons that are no longer playable. If they tried to remaster it, they would add a lot of stuff that would just make it D2 s version of D1. Which is not what we want. What we want is D1 with D2's QOL updates and maybe a touch of modern graphics but keep the grim / obscure aesthetics!
If that was the case go ahead. But as you say. Right now that is basically a fantasy. They have bigger problems right now.
If they wanted to do something they could add a few campaign missions from D1, TTK and RoI as well as the Red War for history context, a few weapons and armor sets that have a classic aesthetic / feel. Like the ROI fire armor sets. Definitely get WoTM and there you go. D1 nostalgia profit.

Much of D1 is already in D2. But I don’t think it’s a bad idea to remaster D1. If it’s done right. If we think about it there is a way for this to make sense and be good. D1 Vanila, Dark Below, TTK, and Rise of Iron can all fit in the episodic format. Something along the lines of; *this year we will have D1 Vanila + 2 new episodes*.

16:00 I've never gotten a raid seal for this exact reason. It's really hard to do a flawlessly raid (obviously) but now with it not being a requirement, I don't feel the desire to even get them now because it's so much easier.

While it would hurt to lose what we already have, restricting enhanced perks to random rolls could be an idea that would help alleviate the problems of weapons crafting.
Those who would benefit from the extra few stat points and enhanced benefits of enhanced perks are most likely also those who are willing to put the time into getting that randomly dropped god roll.
You can obtain the crafted one after some farming and get a 95% god roll, but if you’re willing to really go for it you should be rewarded with those enhanced perks.
