  • How to Sound Like Steve Reich (born October 3, 1936) in celebration of the composer's birthday (a bit belated!). Steve is Reich is a huge inspiration to me and it means a lot to be able to put something like this together.

This incredibly enchanting work and video essay are so important in so many aspects that I don't know where to start! As a composer, sound scientist, and true iconoclastic Steve Reich has been always representing every part of modernist art and his effect on the music we listen today can never be underestimated. All the movie and game soundtracks, sampling based music, tape loops, art rock, ambient pieces and everything has something from Reich's music and his art has been always new and I think it will keep that freshness forever, maybe people from the future will find it incredibly new and refreshing, too! He's certainly one of the great composers whose creative output has significantly changed the way we understand the nature of music and my life itself has been changed by its influence a lot during many phases! As Anthony Davis said: "The most important contribution you can make to the tradition is to create your own music, create a new music." and Steve Reich has always delved into the hidden parts of the wonder of hearing! To me, he's a brain scientist who knows every unknown functional underpinnings of the brain and can manipulate the sound and composition the way he wants to create transition and impact! Many times, I found myself in a different state of consciousness when I listen to his music... This spirituality, this state of consciousness... I can't thank you enough for introducing all of these groundbreaking artists by staying true to your artistry Nahre! I think as the young generation of the world we need every single enlightenment and understanding and as a great artist and teacher you always try to create this impact by enlightening people's artistic lives! To me, the music of our era is transported by that element that is the general determinant of life and this is change! Everything is changing and you're always willing to be a part of this change by preserving Classical music heritage and this is more than important and influencing! As always, I really love the final piece which at the same time, shows your personality when being reminiscent of Reich's dynamic music! Thank you so much Nahre! The future needs visionary people like you and their iconoclastic works like your original music! 😊👏🧠🙏🎉🤯🚀❤️

Stephen Michael Reich ( born October 3, 1936) is an American composer who, along with La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass, pioneered minimal music in the mid to late 1960s.
Reich's style of composition influenced many composers and groups. His innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns (for example, his early compositions It's Gonna Rain and Come Out), and the use of simple, audible processes to explore musical concepts (for instance, Pendulum Music and Four Organs). These compositions, marked by their use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm and canons, have significantly influenced contemporary music, especially in the US. Reich's work took on a darker character in the 1980s with the introduction of historical themes as well as themes from his Jewish heritage, notably Different Trains.
Reich's style of composition has influenced many other composers and musical groups, including John Adams, the progressive rock band King Crimson, the new-age guitarist Michael Hedges, the art-pop and electronic musician Brian Eno, the experimental art/music group The Residents, the composers associated with the Bang on a Can festival (including David Lang, Michael Gordon, and Julia Wolfe), and numerous indie rock musicians including songwriter Sufjan Stevens and instrumental ensembles Tortoise, The Mercury Program (themselves influenced by Tortoise), and Godspeed You! Black Emperor (who titled an unreleased song "Steve Reich").
John Adams commented, "He didn't reinvent the wheel so much as he showed us a new way to ride."
Great video about a great composer!Thank you very much for making this video!🙏🙏🙏
    Regards from India!

    This was lovely. Thank you.
I saw Steve Reich and his ensemble perform once. At one point there was a problem with the sound system and after some discussion on stage Mr. Reich spoke to the audience with just his voice moving the air. He announced that given the absence of amplification they would perform a composition using wood blocks. They proceeded to fill the auditorium with the phasing poly-rhythms that you beautifully demonstrate. A local reviewer described the work as sounding like a "chorus of creepers." It was really good.

I love Steve Reich - and this was a great explanation of his aesthetic!
Another variant of phasing that I find extremely fascinating is polymetric superposition of the same motif - like taking a motif in 7/8 and overlaying it with itself, but leaving out the last note every other repetition in the overlay.... which, incidentally is exactly what the prog band King Crimson do in the chorus to their song "Frame by Frame" off their album "Discipline" (which is in general a wonderful example of how to create entrancing atmosphere through - among other things - repetition and phasing via polymetric superposition) The Reich Crimson comparison has come up quite often talking to other music nerds - I just love the aesthetic of both :)

Awesome... I'm a huge fan of Steve Reich. Great explanation and your piece à la Steve Reich is, like we say in french, la cerise sur le gâteau.
