    Nevermind the whole US vs. Canadian crap. It's always a pleasure to watch professionals at work and these folks were very, very good. Some great examples of staging and engine placement as well as containment and suppression. Plus the foam, which I'd never seen deployed before. The way the neighborhood was designed appears to have allowed for attack from ALL sides, including the aerial. This fire was pretty nasty-looking but it never stood a chance against these folks.
    From a non-firefighter adopted into a family of firefighters, salud to these firefighters. They should use this video in fire academies.

    Excellent work by the VFD. Really good job on the exposures. One thing did strike me as odd (not a criticism, just odd). Seemed like a lot of engines responded before a ladder truck showed up.

    • @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
      @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Piper Red I believe Ladder 3 was one of the first trucks on scene but I couldn't film it arriving because I approached from the other side. The firemen manning L3 were probably busy containing the fire so they waited for L2 as it was assigned with the second alarm anyway.

    • @danrossell6375
      @danrossell6375 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This dept doesn't have tower (bucket) ladder companies? They can be used to apply large volumes of water from ground level on up. If there was an alley behind the place one could have been used for a rear attack as well as having one in front doing the same. Certainly more effective than a fixed master stream in the street.

    • @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
      @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dan Rossell They only have one very old tower ladder in service now. Ladder 2 is one of their newest units that many halls are getting. The only other units they have are quints, which are just shorter ladders. I am not an expert on why they do what they do, I just filmed the video.

    • @popswhippersnapper9629
      @popswhippersnapper9629 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely right - they made little headway with the fire until a ladder pipe got into operation. Truck was late arriving. Massive water use with little result beforehand.

    • @retiredarthritic2083
      @retiredarthritic2083 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponsesI believe that Vancouver went with the option of using mostly smaller units such as rescue trucks engines quints air and light backed up when needed by taller aerials and mutual aid for additional master stream apparatus if needed.

      It is not for an electrical fire...This is a structure fire. Wood, synthetics....Actually, I think foam is over-rated, and expensive......They would have done just as well with water only. 25 year retired professional Firefighter opinion. It has its place, but not necessarily in a surround and drown situation. It could have been beneficial to cover the exposures with foam, it tends to stick around for a while before it sheets off or breaks down.

    • @jackmehoff2312
      @jackmehoff2312 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      duenge Incorrect... Class A Foam is dirt cheap and Vancouver has a shit ton of it for all their Class A and CAFF engines and ladders.
      They also have a large quantity of AFFF foam concentrate for their Fireboats and incase of a large scale burning liquid emergency.
      Under the right conditions it works 5 times better than straight water.

      The stolen gear is usually sold for pennies to buy the wonder drug of death Fentanyl.

      William schlenger Hydrant pressures are normally around 110 PSI in this particular area of West Broadway.
      They hydrants also flow a minimum of 1500 GPM.
      Also, the transition from using 1-3/4 hose to 2-1/2 in initial attacks you really only get an increase of flow capacity of around 10-15%. An 1-3/4 hoseline is very effective.

      In Manchester, UK in 2019, there was a huge fire at an old textile mill in Ashton under Lyne. There were about 8 fire engines with pumps and 5 firefighters each, but just 2 towers (or aerial ladder platforms as they're called in the UK). These 2 were like huge cherry pickets, with a basket for the firefighters to stand in, rather than a very long telescopic ladder.

    Great video! Lucky you to have a parking structure right across the street to give you a nice, elevated view. My thoughts about the firefight . . . . . .
    Good exposure protection. Incident demonstrated how difficult it is to put out a fire from just the outside and the value of aggressive interior attacks (would have been transitional in this case). Waste of foam when doing a surround and drown. If going defensive (surround and drown), get the trucks in position for elevated master streams ASAP (was only one truck on scene?). Finally, if the cop at the end REALLY believed there was a possibility for an explosion then he would not have been standing there!

      @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      GregFromTheOC Thank you very much! Some BCAS paramedics actually alerted me to the parking garage as a good filming location! :P
      Sounds like you at least know what you are talking about in terms of firefighting, unlike a few people in the comments here. I have chosen to accept that every department does things differently and that fires are always unpredictable. Plus we cannot judge everything from a video. There were two ladders on scene as far as I know. In terms of the warning at the end I am not sure where he got his information from but they seemed to be clearing all pedestrians from the back alleyways where the power lines are. I guess there could have been an electrical explosion somewhere in that area when the power was turned back on.

      GregFromTheOC I guess you didn't see Ladder 3 on the Charlie side doing and interior attack as they and Rescue Engine 3 were first in on the fire coming from 4 blocks away at West 12/ Quebec St. The operator of Ladder 3 and the extra guy that night, L3 normally carries 4, had the Ariel up and were spraying water from the monitor on the tip of the Smeal 105 ladder.
      The reason VFD, at the time of filming, was using so much Class A and CAFF is for the simple reason, they have shit tons of it and have to use it up.
      Anyway, as it appears you are from the OC (SoCal?) I'm assuming you know about CAFF and it's proper usage?
      My friend Mike is a Battalion Chief in LA County and they were the trend setters for CAFF and theirs is the techniques the VFD uses.
      The vantage point the videographer used was the roof of the MEC(Mountain Equipment COOP)store.
      And to your last point... some cops are just dumb!

    Interesting to see that no entry into the building was attempted, and hoses from the street level were used rather than a extension ladder master stream - until very late in the proceedings when the building was already a total loss. Glad I don’t live in Vancouver ☹️

      Building was too dangerous to enter to being with. Fully involved wooden structure, gas leak inside plus electrical fires, two vehicles burning in the back feeding the flames, nobody inside...why risk the lives of firefighters by sending them in there for no reason?!
      They did a really good job. No other structures impacted at all, nobody hurt. All good.

    It always amazes me how much water it takes to put out a house fire. They are putting thousands and thousands of gallons on the flames and they are still getting bigger and moving up through the roof. The fire in the attic just will NOT go out! There is so much water it looks as if the house is in the middle of a hurricane! Good work by the FF's but I don't understand why they started with foam and then switched to water. I thought foam was for electrical or oil fires. Anyway, great footage.

    • @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
      @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Holly Rockwell Thank you very much! Yes I see what you mean, I was thinking the same when I saw the fire, but later I found out some more details. For example the source of the fire was at the rear of the house where two cars were also burning and flames had reached power-lines, causing electrical explosions. This made it hard for the firefighters in the back alley to get to the worst part of the blaze. It could also be one of the reasons why they used foam right away. Besides this there were reports of a gas leak as well as propane tanks causing explosions and feeding the fire. It sure was an intense evening. Thanks for watching! :)

    • @JB91710
      @JB91710 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's simple. Angle of Attack. They did not move around to cover the entire interior leaving many surfaces without coverage. A lot of water hit the face of the building. They were doing this from the opposite side of the street instead of close up.
      Fire departments don't THINK of where Every Drop of Water is Going and Do NOT THINK that they could run out at any moment. It's the "Fountain Statue" mentality. "I showed up and squirt water, what more do you want from me?"

    • @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
      @TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      JB91710 You need to consider that the back of the house was the source of the fire, and as I've mentioned before there were 2 cars, electrical lines, propane tanks, as well as a gas line on fire. Once a structure is burning as fast as this one, near other houses, it is the firemen's priority to keep the fire from spreading. This can also include spraying the walls of the surrounding structures with water. There were several lines directly hitting the fire from the back alley too. It may look simple but there is always a strategy behind how they operate.

      JB91710 No, I am giving you specific details on THIS fire, because you cannot see the extend of it only by watching this video. Fire departments are organized with a military-like structure, and I'm sure you spotted all the higher ranking personell giving oders, it's very strategic and not random at all. Maybe firemen acted the way you describe 50 years ago but I know for a fact that in most big cities today they are very fast, precise, and professional!

Once ladder truck opened up the hose on top for attack from above it went down quick from there. Great job by everyone.
