Boris Johnson hanging by a thread after cabinet exodus

  • There has rarely been a more bizarre day in British politics.
A mass exodus from Government ranks. Ministers and aides quitting almost by the minute. A delegation of Cabinet ministers, striding through the doors of Number 10, urging the Prime Minister to go - including newly appointed Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who only this morning was proclaiming his support for Mr Johnson.
All the while the Prime Minister himself appeared to be living some kind of alternative reality as he told MPs he was having a terrific week and was staying put.

Lucky you. Sounds like it would have been fun to share your couch and a coffee, or maybe a beer, whilst watching the meltdown in glorious Technicolor? I said they would have to prize Johnson’s cold, dead fingers from the dispatch box, and I wasn’t wrong. No sense of dignity, that boy. The 1922 Committee will probably have to change its rules over the weekend and he may just jump before a new vote of no confidence? But even then I wouldn’t count on it.
Boris describing Govey as a snake made me lol. It was his reptilian qualities that got Boris into number 10 in the first place, and his betrayal of Ms May was orchestrated by Johnson, so he should have expected that! Govey is the devil himself, stuffed into a Mr Parlanchin puppet with a hair combing.
Did that last question about losing Johnson means the Conservatives lose their most appealing politician strike you, as it did me, as particularly dumb? He was, once! That woman should have said, “Have you been watching the news?” Johnson is as toxic to the voters as Vladimir Putin at a Ukrainian wedding! Especially anyone who lost loved ones during Covid whilst obeying the rules, or those wondering how they’re going to feed their kids when cornflakes cost £5 quid per flake!

Never in the field of politics has a Prime Minister lost so much support, trust and confidence in so short a time has Boris Johnson, especially in the last week. Theresa May may have felt humiliated and hurt when she lost her job, the same with Margaret Thatcher, but it will be as nothing compared to the humiliation and hurt that Mr. Johnson will feel when he does eventually resign. And I am sorry to say Mr. Johnson has only himself to blame for the plight he is in.

Mr Anderson must have been living in a different world to most of us. Johnson only supported Brexit, as he rightly gambled that it would give him the keys to No 10. You would have to be barely conscious not to realise what a disaster it’s been. As for the handling of the pandemic by the Government, it was confused and always too little, too late, which is tragically demonstrated by the numbers who lost their lives. Mr Anderson also referred to the war in Ukraine and the U.K. has helped diplomatically and militarily, although shamefully slowly with the refugee crisis. I am always unsure as to whether Johnson just sees it all as a photo opportunity on a world stage. Anyone would think that a leader of a political party would be chosen because he/she had ability and integrity, characteristics that Johnson has never had and I personally think he will be remembered as one of this country’s worst PM’s.

You've had all sorts of people in the Tory party trying to herd Boris Johnson as if he's some sort of wild beast into a pen and make sure he doesn't go off into one direction" has got to be some of the funniest sentences ever spoken on national television.

What’s weird about UK politics is that this complete exodus of MP’s still doesn’t mean the PM is required to leave office. It’s so bad that the rules need to be changed for a vote of non confidence to be cast….. The rules assume people will follow unwritten rules, it’s almost comedic to see how someone that doesn’t follow common sense rules mess up the system.

I think you misunderstand the way Parliament works. The Prime Minister is Prime Minister whilst he has support of the majority of MPs. Conservative MPs aren't going to vote against him in a parliamentary no-confidence vote as that would bring with it the prospect of a general election. Therefore, it has to be dealt with within the Conservative Party following the Conservative Party rules. If he does go, it will be Conservative Party members that vote for a new leader who will become the new Prime Minister. All the rules the Conservative Party follow are written down and followed meticulously.

the UK is run as a private boys club. no written constitution and if there are rules, they abolish them (like the 'Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011). much better to have a bunch of 'prefects' (the 1922 committee) decide whether a PM can go on or not, and all done in private, not in public (in parliament)
