A ton of this movie is deep cut references to other Honk Kong kung fu films. All of the older actors are stars of '70s films of the genre, in at least some cases playing obvious versions of their old roles (e.g., the fated lovers). Even stomping on the soccer ball is a reference to Shaolin Soccer, the prior film by the same production company. It's a fun and weird movie to someone who doesn't know much about the genre, but to a local audience member who had spent 40+ years watching these films, it's a love letter. I only wish I knew enough to completely get it.

Im not sure if people know but this is kind of Steve Chow's passion project. He used to be an extra on TVB to other major stars. Then when he wanted to make his own movies, he only made comedies mostly because no one really though the was a top tier actor. He really wanted to be like Jacky Chan or Sammo Hung or Bruce Lee. But he never was. So basically this movie is him turning himself in to Bruce Lee because that's what he always wanted to be.
When he auditioned to TVB (basically the only tv studio in Hong Kong) he brought a friend along for emotional support. This friend wanted to be a singer so he didn't really care much to be on TVB but wanted to help his friend. Steven Chow failed the audition. That friend passed the audition. That friend's name?
    Tony Leung
Also the big coup in this movie is he somehow got the 2 actors playing the couple to basically come out of retirement for this movie. No one knows how he managed to do this but everyone was shocked. They were both from the same chinese opera company as Jacky and Sammo. The guy was basically a major stunt performer and if you ever saw an old kungfu movie from Hong Kong he was probably in it. The woman was also a famous stunt actress, her specialty was flips so she was frequently used as a stunt double for both top tier male and female actors when complex flips were needed.
Also Steven Chow continued the tradition in basically all his films of the main female lead being his 'current' girlfriend
