    Vive le KH !
    I have been using your books for 10 months at high dose and I am very happy about it, it made me progress a lot and helped me have a much better understanding of harmony (beside other things).
    The scores are challenging but very clear to read. I appreciate a lot the way you arrange the songs, it sounds very professional and gives a deep insight of how to modify, simplify or densify chords, gives me a solid base.
    I have now so much work to apply your concepts to my older repertoire.
    Your book is the best practical jazz book I have seen.
    I think it should be subtitled "the opening of the way ..."
    My only wish would be to have the unchanged charts noted as a jammable version.
    How can i get the appendix?

      Florent...thanks so much for the comment and book endorsement. Maybe I should hire you as my PR man! I tried to make the book practical , and with songs people want to learn to play, so I really appreciate your telling me. This keeps me going; I hope you will tell me your story and keep in touch. Contact me for the appendix at kenthewitt@hotmail.com You've been pinned, ....blessings.

    Kent, this video is great for visualizing how the left hand syncs up with the right hand melody, which is a thing we learners have the most problems with. Great to hear you play it so well. I too want to get up and dance to it!

    KH another great lesson. You touched on rhythm pattern of the drummer. As an very intermediate student and never playing with a group I would love to have you do a spot on the subject in a little more depth. When I am listening to jazz what should I be hearing on beats 2 & 4, and Beats 1 & 2? Heading to the piano and your book to practice. Thanks. Love your back yard!

      Thank, Chuck. I'll put your request on my wish list. Generally in a case like this (a 2 beat feel) the bass plays on 1 and 3 and the drummer accents the 2 and 4 on the hi-hat and/or snare. That gives it a sense of balance and swing. So actually you want to be hearing all the beats (or 4 in 4/4 time). Generally the most important beat to feel is the 1. This needs more explaining in a video.

    Bill Bailey is an amazing multi-instrumentalist/comedian and I'm disappointed that he had nothing to do with this video... not disapointed by the brilliant lesson though! good job

      Thank you! This song was written in 1902. Your Bill Bailey was born in 1964 and probably still performing.

    So weird I have been periodically thinking my left hand isn't doing much. Plus being left handed I think makes it worse since i chord alot in the left

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a completely different way of using the left hand. Now it's playing the bass line in rhythm and the right hand plays the melody with harmony voiced below the melody line. The result is a more rhythmic sound with the left hand creating the pulse or beat.

  • @yoyoma4424
    @yoyoma4424 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you chording mostly in your right hand?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the chords are in the right hand. It can be one or 2 notes of harmony below the melody, and that may be all you need. The left hand then is free to play the bass line with a pulse or beat. This technique requires a lot of practice, but you will really enjoy the results!
