Tony was making a smart decision and in many ways, it's in his character. He literally flyed into the unknown and took a nuke into the belly of the beast to save the world from Thanos forces and he suffered from so much PTSD and guilt from all the collateral damage the Avengers battles have wrought on earth. Even if they went back home to protect the time stone and just wait for Thanos to attack them that's not very smart from Tony's point of view they will risk more lives that way, look what happened to the people who guarded the stones on their home turfs, who knows what Thanos did to Xander, he slaughtered the half of the Asgurdians and nearly burned Knowhere to the ground to get the stones and Tony volunteered to destroy the time stone, and Strange refused and the Black Order attacked New York taking the stone away from the planet is the best way to protect earth.
People underestimated Iron man when his team actually stood a better chance against Thanos than Cap did until Star lord punched Thanos in the face.
