    One of the greatest drum solos ever performed in rock history. The man was a whirling dervish with unmatched stamina; superb Buddy Rich-like traditional grip technique, speed and artistry; showmanship and a fearlessness that saw(and still sees!) him push the boundaries of percussion musicianship. One of the greatest of them all, Carl Palmer.

    I only saw ELP onstage once in my life. It was 1973, the BBS tour. I was truly amazed, but what was astounding was Carl Palmer. He was a drum MACHINE! They played all of BBS, much of Tarkus, Trilogy, etc. Like four hours. Carl never missed a beat! What an athlete he was! And it isn't all flash and speed. He really knows his fundamentals, and has put to use all he learned from his role models.

    The 1970s was the era of the greatest rock drummers, CP being at the very top of them...as well as the jazz drummers.

    All good people- No single talent HAS to be best! Just enjoy the individual talent/performances and forget all of the competitive b/s. Each performer has his or her own special attributes. Can we all agree on that?

    • @abyios
      @abyios 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Totally agree with you! "No single talent HAS to be the best!" but ... Carl IS a TALENT most celebrated in this video and in the people who NOTICE his exceptional skills as a percussionist, not just now but, throughout his career. He really is one of the most POWERFUL drummers on earth. (Sorry, got carried away there.) I must say I have been a fan of ELP since the 70s. RIP: Keith Emerson & Greg Lake. All I have of their music now is on vinyl and you tube. 100% Agree with your comment. Enjoy ELP.

    It was I believe on the Carson show that Johnny asked Buddy Rich if there was anybody in today's music that he liked he said ELP..,he went to seem when they were in NY, I belive.Carl's solo can attest to his influence for sure.I saw this tour sans the orchestra and they were still incredible 👏 an all time favorite. RIP KEITH AND GREG.Your legacy still lives on.Peace.

    When I was a much younger person, and a much younger drummer, this guy was who I wanted to be. I took it as a challenge to learn as much of his drumming, stroke for stroke, as I could. ELP was my main introduction to progressive rock and odd meters and all kinds of interesting stuff. It also didn't hurt that they played a lot of music inspired by classical music, which I spent four years playing in high school orchestra.
    My first concert ever was ELP, on the second date of their Works tour, in Cincinnati, OH. Got to see them with the full orchestra, which was a real treat since they mostly sent the orchestra home after that because it was too expensive.
    I used to think he was the best, but many years have taught me that there are many outstanding drummers out there. I soon was introduced to Bruford (King Crimson and Yes), Phil Collins, Peart, Weckl, Cobham, Will Kennedy, Gavin Harrison, Steve Smith (especially the more recent vintage) - the list is almost endless.
    They all have something to say, musically. In many cases their playing seems almost effortless. But, for his time, Carl Palmer was my favorite. I liked the kit, I liked the look, I liked the endurance and creativity, I liked everything about him, and ELP.
    Times do change, however. Time and fashion passed them by, although CP remained relevant for many years after ELP.
    Thanks for uploading this.

    Palmer's the reason I started drumming. Saw ELP with the orchestra at Madison Square Garden. The next time I saw them there, bribed some guard to let me sit at the railing, 10 feet behind Palmer and watched him do this solo. A high point of my life! Still gets me as excited watching this, almost 40 years later. These guys were the best in concert ever, imo. Thanks for posting!

    It was built for him by British Steel in 1973. Carl's set is the precursor to the rack systems. Each drum and cymbal stand is held by a pre-positioned rod. The rods are fitted into what Carl referred to as "consoles" and/or "black boxes". The only things off the shelf were the drum hoops(Gretsch die cast hoops), bass drum pedal and hi high hat stand. He also was the first to use a clawless bass drum hoop. Type in "Carl Palmer shows of his stainless steel drums".

    Brilliant drummer. Was bought up listening to modern jazz, people like Joe morello, who is my favourite drummer. To put Carl in that bracket is unfair. Carl is a brilliant drummer in he's own right, just look at this solo, speed, skill, showmanship.
    When ELP split up after there last concert a few years back. I was amazed what Carl said to Keith, that he didn't want to do old ELP stuff any more. Now. You go and see the Carl Palmer band and what is he playing. Old ELP stuff! I saw him twice with he's band and apart from the drum solo was not impressed, was more like heavy metal ELP music, but Carl is still a brilliant drummer and a nice man to talk to. I just miss that ELP magic they produced.

    Carl Palmer was great on Brain Salad Surgery, with other nice moments scattered throughout ELP's catalog. But for me, Bill Bruford (Yes/King Crimson) John "Pugwash" Weathers(Gentle Giant), and the criminally underrated Prairie Prince (Journey/The Tubes), played some of my most favorite moments in seventies rock percussion.

    Palmer was mind blowing he had freaking pots and pans hanging like meat above his set on that arch rack, KODO drums if it could be beaten he had it.

    Ginger Baker couldn't touch this guy.

On are way home they wouldn't shut up about how Palmer was the greatest drummer in the world. They learned something that night, but mist the point that there is no greatest in art, thats sports, not music.But Palmer is more skilled ,people are just bigoted against keyboards in favor of guitar.

    It's a shame that there is no video of him playing like there is of Neil Peart. IMO, they are the 2 greatest drummers ever...along with Buddy Rich, but Rich never played on a drum kit as large as Palmer or Peart. Rich and Krupa both did more with less.

  • @MadamOst
    @MadamOst 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @jatrujillo72 At the time this vid was made,Carl Palmer was in his prime and had created a unique niche that has been unsurpassed ever since...Your comment confounds me because it forces the question. Just what exactly is it that he should have progressed to? Is it in the realm of physics or physical possibility for him or anyone else to do what you suggest? At the age he is now, it very likely takes a lot of effort for him to keep up with his past.

  • @Avalanche1368
    @Avalanche1368 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Carl Commissioned British Steel to build the kit. Yea it's a steel company not a drum maker It's a custom job, 1/2 inch stainless steel with Gretsch hoops.. He also had a jewlery engrave the kit. Google Carl's steel drum kit. lot's of info on it, famous drum kit......hope that helps.

    @itsmiketehdrummer I would pretty much agree with everything you said except for your exclusion of Paice from this status. Paice could do things that Palmer could not, and Palmer chose to do lots of visual fanciness which made him appear to have more control, but in actuality Paice consistently delivered far more impressive technical abilities. The rest of those fellas weren't anywhere near these two guys.

    Yeah, that single sticking, all Rich-related, speaking of which! I do believe Carl married Rich's daughter, Kathy? Right? Palmer was a very fast, busy drummer, groove and taste was acquired, always felt like I was watching a guy go thru an entire Lawrence Stone book in one drum solo. JK, but far removed from drummers like Bonham, Aldridge, for drum solo's. He had his thing working and, it worked. I love ELP and Carl's drumming. Great stuff.

    You have to consider the context. ELP was the Barnum and Bailey of rock, and these solos were not IMO supposed to be musical, as some here are complaining about. I like Palmer's drumming a lot, musically when with the band and as spectacle when soloing. I've seen ELP many times. But if you want "musical" solos, check out the great Tony Williams. Many videos here on youtube that show why many other drummers paid attention to him. He makes up for sweat with imagination.

    @gangsterofboats in his prime, peart was about equal to palmer. he's still a great drummer, keeps time through odd sections like no other, but he's not quite what he was back in the 70s. Palmer (Emerson and Lake too) is a showman.Everything you see here is done solely to look impressive to the audience, but Palmer has the chops and technical ability to back it up too, which is what makes it an amazing solo.

      Carl was a pioneer in his time for what he did with art/symphonic/prog rock.
      As I have grown older and see his style through the years with more educated eyes,there are some glaring weaknesses in his playing.
      While his hand technique is among the best I have ever seen,his overall set style just seems to lack when compared to Bozzio or Simon Phillips.
      He just never grew much beyond his ELP days in terms of composition when compared to somebody like Bruford.

      I remember a retort from Bruford on how one plays a classic rock drum solo being no shirt and ringing a bell with a rope by your teeth.

    Carl Palmer holds respect of Buddy too. He does numerous tributes and pretty much solos in HIS style. If there's any more qualified Buddy Rich cover drummer out there, it's Neil Peart.
