Those of us who are Baby Boomers grew up listening and watching this dude. He was king of the mountain then and still is. Palmer's hand speed is UNMATCHED. In the first half of this video it quite literally looks like the footage is sped up. Just AMAZING...

He was he won every p o l l in the 1970s it's just after ELP broke up a new generation of fans who didn't listen to progressive rock growing up naturally gravitated toward Rush and some of the others. I mean look at bill bruford just like Palmer he gets very little recognition these days except for us old early 1970s progressive rock guys are people knowledgeable in both Jazz and rock percussion😮

I saw him play with Asia on the Alpha tour in August 1983. Neil Peart is #1, well, was now. Carl, Terry Bozzio, several others in the top 5. Bonham is distinct to himself because he was the basis for all of them. While not necessarily as technically skilled, none of them would be here without him.
Buddy Rich was the best drummer that dude was like the best drummer when he was 20, which was when he started his career. He also just had a unique style of playing with people like Charlie Parker and others. He really just was insane man and for sure at the top by a long way.
Yep Palmer blows Neil away. I am a drummer and have played Neil's stuff with ease over the years. Some of Palmer's stuff I can't do. What gets me is how even common people who aren't even drummers can't even recognize how much faster Palmer is to Neil. Neil is not even a fast drummer really.

It is the jazz standard to base everything off the snare to everything else. Old school style but Carl modernized it. To play at the speeds Carl does with accurate precision of the rudiments takes serious skill and endurance. It is way harder and more physically demanding than what Neil does. i get gased after about 3 minutes of trying to play Carl's stuff. I am not saying Neil is a bad drummer by any means, he is phenomenal and very creative. I am just simply stating the big difference between the 2 and what Palmer does is much harder to do and does take some schooling in jazz to be able to play correctly.
I see a lot of Buddy Rich in his playing. I'm guessing Buddy inspired many of the really good rock drummers in one way or another. Also rare to see a drummer these days, play strictly standard/conventional grip. Peart has switched back and forth during much of his career.

As a drummer I was able to understand and duplicate Phil Collins, Chester Thompson, Sib Hashian, even most of Neil Peart. But in all those years of playing, analyzing using slow motion video and freeze framing, Carl goes to a level that I still cannot comprehend let alone duplicate. I really think that people who denigrate him or pan him are actually jealous because it just cannot be matched, there's no amount of training that can create what he became, even someone born with above average proficiency is unlikely to be able to do what he does.

I totally agree, but Carl took lessons from Buddy and imo he did a good job of transferring a basic talent into the showmanship that was ELP and the Prog Rock of the time. In my view no one will ever hold a candle to Buddy, saw him a cpl of times in my youth (I am now 64) and he was just incomparable. What a true pro and bandleader. My Dad introduced me to him from HIS youth, the swing era, and by God i'm so grateful he did.

saw him last night play in Erie, PA for the ELP Tribute.... great performance, the guy's still got it at 73!!! and his musicians are excellent!!

I never hear Portnoy's name mentioned much in these lists but yes he's definitely an incredible drummer and up there.
Portnoy's work with Neal Morse and Transatlantic has really gotten me in his camp. I think he's stupendous.
