  • Traveling to one of China's largest wholesale markets to research new products for Mysterious. Along the way I ride a bullet train, chat with taxi drivers, and discover how the world will end. Did you know China now has the world's longest bullet train network? Yep.

    Thank you so much for showing us this American, now I can say that I have seen how the bullet train looks like on the inside :D
    I love to hear you speaking in Chinese!
    Also, it if is not too much of a hassle, I think it could be awesome if you could show us how the creative process around Mysterious is.
    Greetings from Norway!

    300KM in an hour? Wow!
    Those were some nails on that second cab driver!
    I find the street footage you capture fascinating. It really feels like a different world from the west. Thanks for sharing!

      Chinese bullet trains used to run at nearly 400km/hr, but there was a crash a few years back and they slowed them to a max of just over 300km/hr.
      Yeah, that long thing thing... kinda gross. They use it as a "tool" to keep their ears, nose, etc "clean."
      It is a different world out here! :)

      China is planing to run back to around 400 km/h again in this or the coming year. ..coz the current speed has made lots of traffic and jam in the rail system....

      That train crash had nothing to do with High speed rails. A CRH train ran into a freight train due to false signals of the lamp in lightning weather on an old railway. The speed was only at 110KPH.

      I always want to take the first class seat, but because of budget and other circumstances, I always missed it. How do you feel about the first class seat???

      In Yiwu suppliers market, in many occasions, you really have to open your mouth and asked. Simply because many shops will not be able to display all their products and they will ONLY show it to you when you really open your mouth and ask simply because their shops are a bit small to display everything. Including the custom made umbrella handle.

    Love your video, it gives people a lot of new information. Hope you make a lot of video like this!
    by the way do you have the address of the place or maybe in chinese words?

      I just Google "YiWu Market City" and got all the info I needed to travel down there. It's really very easy since they are a market city and they want people to find the place and buy lots of stuff ;)
      I make the videos using a camera and FCP. Record, edit, publish.

    I love getting to see all of the different places around China that you visit. It's a glimpse of a new place, and it breaks all of my expectations that I've gained from media. I look forward to seeing some new items on the website. I am curious, do you actually make a decent profit off of these items, or are you doing it solely for the fans? I only ask because it seems like you give so much of yourself for the Alice fans, and I'd love to support your ventures any way I can.

    • @AmericanMcGeeOfficial
      @AmericanMcGeeOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the kind comment. Glad to hear you're gaining a new perspective of China. It is funny how mass media can warp our sense of the world. One of my favorite quotes (from Mark Twain) captures that idea really well: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."
      As for Mysterious products... I do strive to make a profit with these items. That's especially true these days, as I've recently closed down my game studio in Shanghai and made Mysterious my primary business (source of income).
      Thanks for the support! :)

    • @amberjpresley
      @amberjpresley 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That quote is absolutely perfect. Couldn't have said it better. I do hope to travel the world much more than I already have, but I love getting real glimpses from others who have been to a place I want to visit. I am glad that Mysterious is not just a fan pleasing activity, but a supporting one. I love all of the products that keep coming out. I also enjoyed the video games, but would be beyond ecstatic if a board game were made in the fashion of something like "Fortune and Glory" or "Ghost Stories." I have a love/hate relationship with technology. It's amazing and all, but I really enjoy the games that I can play and interact with friends in person. I was bummed when I saw that the tarot cards weren't going to be made.

    This time, the camera was traveling without danger :P
    Like Amber Presley, i'm opening my mind of all things that massive mediums say to the people about other countries (especially China). In Argentina, too many people look at the China's people that comes to put a market or sell stuff made in China. Here, most of this stuff is denominated like things of poor quality.
    I see this amazing market and the hipermarkets on my country are nothing compared with the firsts.
    The bullet trains look beautiful and the views are priceless, everything seems incredible, at least, for a guy like me :D
    Other problem here was Uber, principally because the taxi's drivers were like a mafia and legal issues about licenses.
    I guess that you will invite your "birthday's brother" for a birthday's vlog haha

    • @AmericanMcGeeOfficial
      @AmericanMcGeeOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The more you travel and see the world the more you realize how everyone, everywhere is just trying to live life and be happy. All the other stuff is media distortion.
      Taxis in Shanghai are also pretty terrible - they've not updated their cars for 15+ years. Uber has been a wonderful development here. Fortunately, they were acquired by a local Chinese company here, who make it legal for them to operate in China.

      I hope travel around the world and learn more about the things that we usually call "stranger" :)
      Here the taxis are regularly updated each one or two years (at least, a big portion of total taxis).

    It's so inspiring to hear you speak Mandarin, American. How long did it take you to master it?

    • @AmericanMcGeeOfficial
      @AmericanMcGeeOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha. My Chinese could use improvement, but these kinds of solo travel days are helpful. I spent the entire day only speaking Chinese and it was a lot of fun. Even added some new words to my vocabulary just for this trip.
      Would not say I've "mastered" it at all... still learning... and I've been teaching myself for the past 10+ years (the entire time I've lived in China). Honestly, after 10 years of living here, you'd think I would have mastered it! Lazy me :(

      American McGee Nevertheless, I bet you can survive China better than most people. My youngest brother has been taking Mandarin class for a long time. Like most pupils, he was livid about it at first, thinking it was unnecessary, but now he has learned to appreciate and value it. It's the language of the future!

    What watch is that by the way?

    • @AmericanMcGeeOfficial
      @AmericanMcGeeOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a Casio... PRW-2500T-7CR Pro Trek - I've had it for years and am very happy with it. One of the few things that's survived years of abuse while out sailing around Thailand.

    • @CerulianSamurai
      @CerulianSamurai 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, I like the look of the watch, might have to pick one up my self.
      I didn't even know you made TH-cam videos, I'll definitely be stopping by now and then to see more. Really like to see other cultures, and cities. I usually also look up videos of other countries to see what the culture looks like, how it came to be, mythologies, etc.
      Very interesting stuff. A couple of days ago I watched a video about Japanese Carpenters that don't use screws, bolts, or nails to build furniture and Temples, they mostly used wooden Joinery to keep structures stable, and that some of the work they have done on Temples are still standing, very fascinating.
