  • Finishing up the tune up on the 1964 1/2 mustang. Everything went pretty well. I test drove it and it steadily got hotter the faster I went. I think the car has no thermostat. Ill check that out later. It ran beautifully .

    Nick,
That Pony just needs a Thor-level power washing underneath and she'll sparkle almost like new. Git er dun, boy!
    Regards,
    John

Hey John, yes the steam clean in coming soon. Just had to tune it up first. Gotta fix the oil leaks too. Thanks.

Hello Nick. I don't think I ever put my hand in the waste oil! At least you didn't bang your head this time. Looks like a good degreaser and a power washer would be in store.

Yeah, while changing the oil in my 2006 dodge ram I dropped the very large oil filter in the oil pan and a wave of diesel oil splashed over my head and face and shoulders. That was a big mess. I had to have my wife help me clean up. Thank god she was home. Its the 3 stooges over here some times.

"It softens hands while you do an oil change."
    "You're soaking in it"
Thanks for the update, that generator cover must be an extremely rare piece...I can't imagine anyone putting it back on, and most likely would have thrown it away.

Hey Alvin, I had a mustang expert guy call me and that's what he said. He said that it was in exceptionally good condition and you never see them anymore and they are rare. Not that its worth a million bucks, just a novelty item really. All the other Fords I've seen do not have that. Square birds do not have that. However, they do have a rubber boot to cover the back of the generator but those are always missing too. Thanks.

Haha the hand in the oil at the end was hilarious! Good thing you didn't drop the phone in there.

I've either not been paying attention or this is your first video in a while. Very cool early Mustang. I guess it has the 265 V8? My Uncle sold Fords in El Reno Oklahoma. In 1970 he found a perfect 64 1/2 Mustang for my cousin who was just getting her license. Who would have thought that these Mustangs would still be around 53 years later?

Hey Jeff, who would have thought that Ford would sell a million of these in just 2 years. That's crazy numbers but it was the right car at the right time. You are right, I didn't do a video in a while. I've been banging my head against the wall with this 58 Fairlane. I think this car is haunted and hates me. The Mustang has a 289 and a C4 trans. I kept saying cruisomatic trans in the video but I was wrong. Thanks.

I think it looks pretty solid underneath. The strut rod bushings need replaced as you said. I think it got that dent in the front cross member part you pointed out when it ran over a Camaro sometime back in the sixties! ;) Have fun working on the cool Mustang!

Hey Kayeninetwo, yes it is solid but both front floor boards do have rust holes. Not huge holes but small holes maybe 10 inches by 4 inches. Not bigger. I just bought a front and rear suspension kit for it with leaf springs and front coil springs. Ill video tape all that when the time comes. Thanks.

Hi Nick, At least you did spill the oil when putting in a jug to recycle. Look like you have good virgin car not touch by unskilled hands. That's going to make nice ride for your wife.

Hey Mark, well Ive been told by some experts that the car is not as original as I thought. Seats are not correct, power steering pump is not correct and a few other small items. Oh well, its still a nice car. Thanks.

It sounded really nice when I passed you and the Mrs today.
How cone if the 'Stang is for her, you were driving it? ?

Hey Craig, she wanted me to drive and I had just finished the tune up so I wanted to drive it and test it out. It ran pretty good. The temp gauge continually increased while I was driving it at speed on hwy 24, so I think there is no thermostat. Once I lowered my speed, the gauge stopped increasing. Why do guys think it will run cooler without the thermostat? Your Riviera Grand Sport is looking good and you looked so hot in it big boy. lol That is a very nice car. Glad to see you finally enjoying it. Its been a long road with that car. Thanks.

Great video! Just curious, what's the best jack point for these and Thunderbirds with unibody construction? I'd like to get my 62 TBird front end on stands to check out the suspension.

I use the heavy cross member under the radiator or the large round cross member under the engine oil pan. Do not jack the car up from the oil pan. Just sayin'. In the back, use the diff, put the jack under the pumpkin and jack the back of the car up there. Do the back first, then do the front. Do not put the jack stands under the floor pans. In the front there are very heavy pads just behind the wheel wells or the frame rails along the trans tunnel. In the back put jack stands on the leaf spring perches or the frame next to the spring perches. Good luck.

Ah front spring spacers, my TBird had a few in, are they added in there to help support sag on old springs? I thought the springs may of been previously replaced.

Hey Steve, I think the springs in this car are the originals. The left lower control arm looks newer than the rest of the suspension but everything else looks original. The rear leaf springs have air shocks so they are sagging too. Just an old worn out suspension. It rides like a boat going down the road at speed and the back of the car is lower than the front. Maybe the air shocks need air?? I didnt even look to see where the filler valve is. Once winter sets in Ill rebuild the suspension, put on disc front brakes and the like. Thanks.
