For those who can't pick up the lyrics :)
And did those feet in ancient time
    Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
    On England's pleasant pastures seen?
    And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
    And was Jerusalem builded here
    Among those dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear: o clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariots of fire!
    I will not cease from mental fight;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
    Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

Thank you for this reaction - love the Last Night of the Proms :) William Blake's poem which forms the words of the song wanted to remind us that we've not built a perfect Christian country, that we still have a long way to go before we have heaven on earth. Hearing God Save the Queen makes me so sad but I know when the Proms comes round this year and we sing God Save the King it too will be emotional. Most of our National Songs are hymns and not military marches which I hope says a lot about the British.

Jerusalem has always been a favorite of mine. When you start researching the reason William Blake wrote this poem it becomes even more amazing. The words led me into a need to understand the reasons and they are amazing.
And did those feet in ancient time
    Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
    On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

    And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And the story of how Parry wrote the music is worth knowing too:
Sir Hubert Parry was a highly respected musician, Director of the Royal College of Music and Oxford Professor of Music. He was also an atheist (he would have said humanist) and a socialist. He really didn't understand why we were at war with Germany. Then in early March 1916 he was visited by Henry Walford Davies (an organist, choral conductor and former pupil) and the Poet Laureate, Robert Bridges. They asked if Parry would contribute something to a fundraising concert to be held later in the month at the Albert Hall. The cause was Fight For Right - a lobbying organization attempting to persuade the government not to seek peace with Germany. Parry was decidedly not keen on supporting such a clearly right-wing cause and said no. But he did allow Bridges to leave behind the Blake poem. Several days later Parry called back and gave them the music (singers in unison with organ) saying, "Here's a tune - do what you like with it". Maybe Walford Davies had thought that the rather left-wing theme of the verses ("the country may not be perfect but we have to strive to make it so") would appeal to Parry. In any case, the song went down well at the concert and sold well.
But then Parry withdrew all support for Fight For Right, and there was concern that he'd withdraw the song (he'd retained the copyright, so he could). Then Millicent Garrett Fawcett, one of the leaders of the Women Voters' movement (the Suffragettes, fighting for women's voting rights) asked Parry if they might use the song as their hymn. Parry was delighted and assigned the copyright to the Suffragettes. Parry died in 1918 in the Spanish Flu pandemic, and Elgar made the big-orchestra version for the Leeds Festival of 1922.

I was there for this, and whatever you may feel having seen it, realize that it is only the faintest shadow of what it is to actually be there. This is the final concert in a series of seventy-plus stretching over eight weeks, and this is the "end of term party". One of the very few times when the patriotism within every UK citizen is allowed to surface. Brittens' setting of "God SaveThe Queen" was Her Majesteys' favourite, by her own admission. Incidentally, becauseof the way the Proms have worked over their 128 years' run (yeah, THAT long) the audience in the hall is proably the most musically knowledgeable on the planet. Anyone can attend, there is no dress code, tickets for every concert are available for seven pounds. Music from around the world in many different genres, sent out around the world. (Audiences for ordinary concerts can reach the millions, on TV radio and on-line.) The audience is not professional singers. I'm proud to be a small part of it. (Oh, and I can't carry a tune in a sack.). The "promenader" also raise around £100,000 per year to suport muscial and cancer-related charities.

Many should ask God for help more. Faith is around the corner always ready to help. I miss her every day! When the music swells and everyone sings loud ....I sobbed because we all miss the respect she had and we gave to her for not having her own life here. She had to be impartial.... Rest in peace Maam!

Jerusalem is always a soul stirring moment of the proms concert's.
This shows that Britons can come together as an immovable force in the world. Come on Brit's get the crazy gang on move again. 🇬🇧

Barmy Army is never far beneath the surface. We don't put our flag on every building, truck and dumpster but when the occasion is right we just 'Be British', Loud and Proud.
Sadly there is a part of the Establishment and politics that has taken it upon itself to take every opportunity to run this great country down. It is utterly shameful and no other country does it.
      Rule Britannia!
      God Save the King!

@@1chish we carry the pride in our hearts and show it by our actions. Not by indoctrination like the U.S. . Theirs is a forced pride.

@@jono.pom-downunder I cannot understand swearing allegiance to a piece of cloth or defending a Constitution written by very different people 250 years ago in very different circumstances.
I swore allegiance to a living person representing my country - Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth. I wore the Union Flag with pride but my allegiance was to her as commander in chief. As plain ordinary citizens we are not, as you say, forced as US children are to parrot their Oath or Allegiance every morning. Its actually quite a disturbing thing.

Just for clarity, Jerusalem is an English song not a British song, I was confused myself as to why people wearing Wales tops would be singing this song, hey ho what can you do? Jerusalem should probably be the English national anthem as God save the King is a British anthem not English, just sayin'... By the way I love your accent and your smile and I think you're going to do well, that's not meant to be patronising.

Sorry, but how can anyone come from Jamaica, which is part of the Commonwealth, and say that they have NEVER heard "God Save The Queen?" Jamaica is part of the Commonwealth, the Queen was head of the Commonwealth, how can you NOT know the UK National Anthem?

@MichealHill I can guarantee you three quarters of Jamaican my age and younger don’t know these song. Even though Jamaica at been apart of the commonwealth these song weren’t never taught in our schools so how would we know them. Most of us don’t know much especially if you grew up in the country side of Jamaica like myself. There no reason for me to say otherwise. What the point of lying. Honesty is the best policy in my book. Thanks for voicing your thoughts. Have a wonderful evening one love🥰🥰
