Empress, you completely hit the mark about Madonna’s vocals vs her persona. It’s why us long term fans have stuck around. She’s always had the talent to convey emotion & vulnerability in her songs. It’s one of her greatest and most underrated strengths as a singer. I actually prefer many of her ballads to her club bangers❤️

The guy is Mandy Patinkin who was 37 at the time while Madonna was 31. He has a long stage career most famously as the originator of the role of Che in the play Evita (for which Madonna later did the movie version ). He has done many tv series as well in shows such as Chicago Hope, Criminal Minds and Homeland. He was in the movie Dick Tracy (therefore his appearance here), as well as in the movies The Princess Bride, and Yentl (opposite Barbra Streisand).

Yes.. but just have to say .. Mandy was the first Che in America. Colm Wilkinson was the first in the original Evita, then David Essex was the first Che on the West End. .. then Mandy. (Just like Patti LuPone.. she is the 3rd Evita)

It was refreshing to hear Madonna engage in a straightforward and simplistic duet at this point in her career! Next decade, she released “Something To Remember” which was a compilations of ballads(unfortunately this one was not on it) but it was interesting to experience the soft and tender side of her! She is very refined and believes in in this song! Mandy Patinkin is such a wonderfully established seasoned performer! It’s definitely unexpected to see these 2 very different artists collaborate successfully in this way!💕

You're right about her persona. Those sweet tender innocent vocals are more about who Madonna is as a person. Despite how she is portrayed in the media, everyone who meets her say how sweet she is....that being said she hasn't always been an angel either, but who has!
There is an interview on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1992 which you'll find interesting for one particular moment which happens....I won't reveal.

I think this album was the first time I realized and respected that Madonna had bigger plans artistically than just churning out bops and being 100% commercial. Retrospectively when I look back now, I see that she had already turned that corner with a lot from Like a Prayer and even True Blue but while living it real time, this was the moment for me, Of course she would still also go on for another 3 decades making bops as well….

    Brilliant.
    What can you lose?
    Only the blues
Why keep concealing everything you're feeling?
Say it to her, what can you lose?
    Maybe it shows
She's had clues, which she chose to ignore
    Maybe though she knows
And just wants to go on as before
    As a friend, nothing more
    So she closes the door
    Well, if she does
    Those are the dues
    Once the words are spoken
    Something may be broken
    Still, you love her
    What can you lose?
    But what if she goes?
At least now, you have part of her
What if she had to choose?
    Leave it alone
    Hold it all in
    Better a bone
    Don't even begin
    With so much to win
    There's too much to lose

✨🎙🎙✨That’s the great Mandy Pakinkin singing with her. He plays the piano player named 88 Keys in Dick Tracy, and this duet is a scene/montage moment in the film… This movie has more montages in it than any other I can think of!! In the movie this is a moment where we get to see the softer side of Breathless Mahoney.
Mandy was almost a muse of Sondheim, starring in key productions on Broadway, and he’s an accomplished actor too. He played Che in the original production of Evita, and the painter Georges Seurat in Sondheim’s revered musical Sunday In The Park With George. His most iconic film roles are as the lustworthy Jewish student who Barbra falls for in Yentl and the adorable swashbuckling hero with a vendetta, Inigo Montoya, in Rob Reiner’s beyond beloved post modern children’s film The Princess Bride.
This song is written as an interlude by Stephen Sondheim, and the thing you always have to listen for in Sondheim is the unusual notation. His songs can be deceptively simple sounding but the chords are notoriously difficult without any leeway to stray from the composition… This was also because Sondheim himself was incredibly exacting with the singers who took on his work. Mandy is a very good vocalist with a precise and rich tone, and Madonna does a lovely job bringing her bright girlish tone to balance his more traditional vocals. Their harmonies have a certain contrast that I find so stunning and memorable. These are the moments when the pop star Madonna very smartly developed her technique as a singer, and broadened the world’s perception of the scope of her talent.

They already told you everything about Mandy Patinkin 😁This is the third and last song from the soundtrack. I'm glad that you liked that because I've always loved it too, like the most part of the album. I agree with other boys that the two parts of "Now I'm following you" have to stay together. There's a male voice there too, but I don't want to spoiler who's singing with Madonna. So here we have two duets in a row. I hope you will like it too. You hit the nail on the head Empress! This song illustrates that perfect vocals are not necessary in pop music. Mandy Patinkin, who is a trained vocalist, sings perfectly; but it's Madonna's imperfect singing that seals the deal here. Full of emotion and character... Patinkin is great for Broadway of course, but not really pop. :)

I think you could hear the more confident in-your-face Madonna on "Express Yourself" and even "Hanky Panky." It will come out more in the songs she did for The Immaculate Collection (which comes next after the tour) and Erotica. This song is really sweet and works really well in the movie, giving the supporting characters some real depth. She held her own alongside Mandy, who was a really experienced theater singer. Wondering if I should re-watch the movie before your reaction - it's been a while! It's a good popcorn flick. It's too bad you can't see it in a theater.

No shade to anyone but to me it's just so crazy that people still question Madonna's vocals after everything she has done, even still today. I still read bs like she only became the biggest female selling and touring artist of all time because she used sex lol. If anything her albums sold more when she wasn't sexual. True Blue, Ray Of Light, Music, Confessions. I also would not say Madonna 1983 or Like A Virgin or Like A Prayer were overt sexual so what are they talking about. She can sing period! Her voice is pleasant and distinctive. Not everyone likes a screaming diva who relies on other people to hand them songs or material over an authentic singer songwriter like Madonna is. Also no shade to other artists but in a world where BTS, Britney Spears, Paula Abdul, Jlo etc. became megastars how people can question Madonna's vocal ability so much is just mind blowing to me. lol

    • @pensiveczar2239
      @pensiveczar2239 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, to play devils advocate, one could say that BTS, Britney Spears, Paula Abdul and JLo could in some ways be blamed on Madonna. If she could blow up with non-overt vocal talent, then that just opens the door for others like her to follow. That said, I get your point. Madonna has, IMO, just enough raw singing talent and strong enough vocal personality to be considered 'not bad.' Her voice has a lot of character to it. While her vocals (on record) may not be especially impressive, they (unlike Brtney and JLo) usually aren't annoying and are generally comfortable to take in.
Madonna's biggest problem is consistency. Exceptionally good singing never seemed like something she made a priority. Money was a priority. Publicity/attention was a priority. Extravagent music videos and tours were priorities. Messages/themes/controversy/sex/rebellion/shock value were priorities...but strong vocals, for some reason, were not. If at almost 40 she could study/practice and focus enough to evelate herself to becoming a technically *good* singer for _Evita,_ then why didn't she do that a decade earlier? And why did she seemingly stop training after _Evita_ was over?! That's like a basketball player not training.
She'd work with vocal coaches for short stints when she was about to do something that she knew would require her to sound better than usual. But I'm guessing she didn't consistantly spend hours perfecting her skills in order to become (and stay) a really good or consistent singer. Her live vocals aren't consistent; they're usually okay (occasionally good) to bad (sometimes horrible)...but it's always a coin toss, with the odds slightly against her.
I think Madonna had enough raw talent to have been able to grow into becoming a stronger singer than she's known for (and I think she's better at it than what she's given credit), but for some reason that wasn't where career priorities seemed to lie. She seemed okay being just okay, in that regard. Which is odd to me, considering how much of a perfectionist/workaholic she's said to be. You'd think her ego wouldn't be okay with there being a general perception that she couldn't sing, even if it wasn't fair or totally true.

    • @Marc-zi5cq
      @Marc-zi5cq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@pensiveczar2239 If you listen to her vocals on Ray Of Light, they are not just not bad. They're so pleasant. I guess voices are subjective, you either enjoy them or not but i never get tired of hers and her style of singing, while i easily get annoyed of those of some ''better'' bigger singers like Christina Aguilera who are just too loud for me to enjoy for a long time.
I think today's popstars like Taylor Swift are not even a match on Madonna vocally not even talking about performing and creativity when it comes to live shows and videos. I still think Madonna offers the most for me as an overall artist and package.

I mean it's okay. It's not especially exciting to listen to, but I can't say anything bad about it either...other than maybe that it's too short and doesn't have much of an ascension or climax. The male vocalist does sound more technically experienced and seemed like he was being careful to not overpower her. However, the way the song was engineered/mixed, he still wound up largely dominating her, as his vocals seemed more upfront than hers. But to her credit, I think Madonna did an adequate job of keeping up with him enough.
