    Worked briefly with Will Harvey in grad school, long after this game was produced. Brilliant and super-nice guy, no dark side evident. But he does have a reputation for building fiendishly brutal games: see The Immortal en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Immortal_(video_game), reputed to be one of the hardest games for the NES. As for examples of evil, just take a look at BF3's release and BF4's release. During BF3, they promised PS3 preorder users a free copy of BF1943. Later, they took that incentive away and said that they dont feel the need to give out BF1943 for free because a "majority" of PS3 users already owned the game. They got hit with a class action lawsuit, and were forced to honor the offer that they made to PS3 users. Although, in order to get the game, there were a lot of hoops to hop through.
    With BF4's release, they outright put out a non-functioning, incomplete game. And this was after a beta (which was more of a demo). The issues that the game had were known about well in advance, and yet they still decided to push the game out instead of delaying the game. Loss of save progress, console freezes, server freezes, netcode problems, and glitches galore. Here we are 2 months after release, 4 patches down the road, and the game STILL nearly as unstable as it was on day 1. Least on 360. And during this time, they decided to push out a DLC because "it was in the final stages of production" rather than focus on fixing the game. And when that DLC came out, there were PLENTY of issues that came with it. The biggest one being that there were nearly no servers to play it on (about 4 in my server region, with no servers running the new game mode that came with the DLC).
    Now, where does this lead? Well, apparently EA had hyped up their game so much and changed sales projections days before the release of BF4. And during that period, it seems like EA took advantage of the situation and dumped a bunch of stocks during that period. The game released as it did, stocks dropped, and they even came out later and said that "they would halt development on all DLC until the problems are fixed". Which dropped stocks even more. Two class action investor lawsuits have been filed on EA because of this.
    EA is literally killing DICE, the developer. In addition to BF4 and it's DLCs, they are also pushing DICE to develop a new Mirrors Edge game, and a new SWBF game. Sure, they have DICE LA, but DICE LA is just Danger Close reskinned. And they've not made a good game since they've been in existence (both MoH reboot games).
    Add other poor design decisions, losing one of the original head developers for DICE, and just some other things... well, you get the point.
    I could literally rant on EA for some time more, and give more examples, but I'd be sitting here all day if I did.
    I feel betrayed as a customer, and I know it's hurting DICE alot (a development studio that I love). With the way things are going, DICE wont last too much longer, and there really isnt much we can do about it. I've taken a stand to not play BF4 until it's fixed, but that's because the game is pretty much unplayable for me and I just dont want to deal with the frustration. I play games to relax and have fun. If a game cant provide me with that, then why am I playing it?
    Anyway, that's my rant. And again, Happy B-day Ross.

      I wouldn't necessarily consider that to be "evil" except for the part about damaging DICE. These are simply poorly thought out, despicable business decisions that have not necessarily hurt anyone other than DICE which, granted, does count for some points to your credit.
      The scenario that Ross described where they filed a lawsuit that they knew was bullshit in an attempt to bankrupt a poorer company, on the other hand, THAT is evil. That is literally the same thing as a schoolyard bully stealing a smaller child's lunch money and they pass this off as a "business strategy". That is mind blowing to me.

    • @LumosX
      @LumosX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Welcome to the future. BF4 got fixed eventually. BF1 was pretty fantastic, though its DLC cycle was odd; new Mirror's Edge was mediocre and flew under my personal radar; Battlefront EA was... okay, I guess, though I found it lacklustre, and Battlefront 2 EA was a microtransation fiasco. DICE is still alive, as EA seems to like Frostbite. For now. In the mean time, BioWare is eating shit after the dramatic failure of ME: Andromeda and as its developers break under the "pressure" they're suffering under the development of Anthem.
      BioWare lost me after Mass Effect 3, though EA is probably to blame as well. Anyhow, I won't cry over their likely demise. The moment EA kill DICE though, I'm out.

      @@ng.tr.s.p.1254 That's a gross stretch. It's also a less usefull defination. It's important that we not try to mischaracterize people who commit evil which good intentions. As doing so makes it easier for us to fall into that mental trap. Saying it's all about ego or ideology is a means of othering them and their intentions. Allowing us to more easily dismiss when we are getting ready to step over the moral event horizon, because we have "the right motivations."
      Whether Ego and Ideology are at play, and while they often are, they aren't always. It's important to remember the person in question does not see it that way. Nor would we if we where put into that position. Trying to assign evil to a specific motive like personal profit is a fools game.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@patrickbuckley7259 NG is right about ego and ideology, though. Think about it. People generally don't see themselves as evil. They aren't "exploiting workers," they're "maximizing productivity." They aren't "committing genocide," they're "eliminating enemies of the state." They aren't "defrauding" anyone, they're "redistributing the wealth." They aren't "emotionally abusive," they're "keeping the peace."

    Ross, EA's evil goes even farther than we think.
    See, when EA does "Day One DLC", shoddy annual sequels, and doesn't allow mods for their games, these trends become more accepted because of how POWERFUL EA is. They've got massive influence in both the corporate and gaming world.
    Then, these shitty practices become the standard for other developers/publishers because they see EA's games top the sales charts month after month. All games which employ these exact "features." Your example of their worker exploitation is another harrowing instance of this.

Inside of stores, it's more like shape, colors, layouts, lighting, sounds, scents, and building shapes. They've used psychological and sociological research to figure out exactly what tricks they can play on the very pathetically easily tricked human mind to get you to buy more, think less and move along. That's why Hot Topic and Spencers both have that intentionally different storefront though. It's more places that have no need to draw your eye because you pretty much need to go there, like shopping plazas and supermarkets, as well as modern cities (it's also good for space because squares and rectangles are good for that). Places trying to look visually appealing, like malls mix the two so there's visually appealing elements but still a very tracklike design. Supermarkets spend millions researching the exact design that gets people on average to spend the most. The reason it changes occasionally is because the confusion draws up sales because of impulse purchases because people see products they usually wouldn't because they're lost.

    I was at the second to last hole, which was a bridge, and the last hole had a pinball theme to it. I was lining up my shot to make sure I got a hole in one on the bridge, what wound up happening was (and I'm not making this up) I hit the ball so hard, it jumped off the bridge, rolled up the pinball machine and I got a hole in one there. Well, EA's frivolous lawsuit to ruin Origin is probably a good reason Richard Garriott would call the owner what he did. Given Origin was Richard's company. If you owned Origin systems and saw someone pull a stunt like that on you (which really is criminal behavior for which *on paper* wasn't something the law could come down on, at the time), you'd probably say the same thing. That's one of those, "How can you sleep at night after doing that" things. Kind of leaves a bad taste in one's mouth that EA named their online store with the very name they pretty much bullied into their company.
    Sad part is that people, even today on TH-cam, talk about videogame companies that are way worse than EA. But once they state examples, it's completely clear they just don't know of EA's history. Because even this one example is something just about none of them ever tread upon.

    The pattern has repeated itself more times than you can fathom. Game companies rise, evolve, advance, and at the apex of their glory, they are extinguished. Bioware is not the first. By utilizing our funding, game companies develop along the paths we desire. They exist because we allow it, and they will end because we demand it.

    Let's mention that EA has repeatedly inflated expectations on upcoming titles to increase their own stock market values, in order to make (albeit dumb but still) investers buy inflated shares that they are then forced to sell because hey, the sales projection was like punching a polar bear in the nards and expecting a positive outcome. For example Kingdoms of Amalur and Battlefield 4. I even think some investers sued EA for delibrately pushing stock, for which they plead innocence with their supreme court worth ofmlegal department, right before doing the same thing again with the next big title.

      That's what arseholes like Maddof and Belfort do, so it's not really evil. When I or anyone who doesn't abuse words such as "evil" use it, we mean companies like Rio Tinto and their corruption of the Timor region in Indonesia to maintain their control over the region's mines AND subjugate the people there with help from the government.
      Hell, although EA has done a lot of evil, they don't hold a candle to Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, any Oil Company, General Electric, HSBC and any major bank that has been in a scandal pertaining to arms dealing and stock manipulation.

    Moving away from EA for a moment, I wholeheartedly understand what you mean about games that make you wish the whole world was like that. The biggest one for me at the moment is _The Witness_; if you don't know, it's a puzzle adventure game in the style of _Myst_ where all the puzzles take the form of maze panels. Some puzzles require you to use logic (like tracing a line over all the dots or dividing the white and black squares, all without going back over yourself), while some require the use of external environment cues (like looking on a nearby tree for a hint on how to solve a tree-shaped maze). It messes with my head slightly, making me wish the entire world was just an intricate series of interlocking maze puzzles. Like, instead of a key for my door I'd have a big blank maze grid that could only be solved by overlaying an image from my phone. Or if you go to buy groceries, you could get a discount if you solved a logic panel in a certain amount of time. It makes me imagine some alternate history where the panels were given to mankind thousands of years ago and integrated into human history, so you'd be exploring ruins and find doors that can only be opened by solving these ancient puzzles. TL;DR version: _The Witness_ is awesome and I want my life to be more like it.

    Watching this again in 2018, and shuddered at the line "Adding Micro-Transactions to a 60$ game". I'm certain Ross predicted the future in this due to the 2017 Battlefront 2. I mean, EA wasn't the first to do it, but I think it was the first to put it in a 60$ game. The others that do this either made the games free later and/or kept it to a max of 40$. Still pretty bullshit, but EA's was BULLSHIT. Especially with how they handled it.

I watched him play and really enjoyed the colors, sound and graphics and the game was addictively fun what little I did get to play. I never knew until recent years they later ported it to the Sega Genesis.

    • @MegaRazorback
      @MegaRazorback 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thing is with most buildings in the school system, they tend to let the building go as far as it can lifespan wise with minor fixes through out before even thinking about proper renovation as that's money they don't really have on hand 90% of the time (school fees to parents isn't enough for even a medium sized school to properly fix things) that money mainly has to allocated by the state to pay for a full renovation.
      For instance the highschool i went to in Western Australia had bloody DEMOUNTABLES (basically a building that can be jacked up and then built around AKA a temporary building like on a construction site) for their special education students and they were awful (i was one of said students) and those demountables had been there 12 years prior to me attending that school...It wasn't until the majority of the normal kids parents bitching at the school that they looked god awful and so out of place that the school gave the special education staff/students two whole buildings and classrooms to use and then the following year they relented even further and actually asked the state for funds to build new staff rooms and classrooms in the same area that the original buildings that they had given to the special education staff/students...Something i might add, SHOULD have been done years ago!
      The demountables there were supposed to house the special education students while a new wing was added for them but guess where that money went? On a new bloody gymnasium/sports hall of all things when the previous one on the school grounds was only 4 years old and plenty large enough for the amount of students that were enrolled at the time!

    That thing with the frivolous Origin lawsuit is called a SLAPP suit. SLAPP stands for Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, and it refers to when a company sues someone with the specific purpose of hurting them financially with the legal process itself. When a company does a SLAPP suit, they're doing it against someone who is critical or competition, but is in a much weaker financial position. The company sues, and the defendant is put in financial jeopardy because of the legal costs, so they're forced to give up outright. States have been passing anti-SLAPP laws over the years, but many states still are behind on those, and those particular states companies are VERY sue-happy.

    Happy Birthday Ross!! And yes, EA are evil. Bullfrog, Westwood made lots of games I adore! And now I fear they will continue to reboot franchises from old titles, making them mediocre and sucking all the good stuff out of the original. Case in point, Syndicate! My favorite game ever! On the Amiga, would play that for days at a time. When a reboot was announced, Oh boy! An updated graphics engine. Refined gameplay. A more strategic style.... was what I wanted. Instead, a so-so FPS, loosely based using some points from the original back story of Syndicate. In that one swipe... destroyed it, and now labelled as Syndicate, people will go "Oh that FPS game?" "No, the four-man strategy game!" "Oh, yeah. Never played that!" -.-

    • @TheZALGOisCOMING
      @TheZALGOisCOMING 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's annoying that they just remake old games and make them generic. I liked Syndicate, but it really was just another FPS. There was no reason for them to tack on an existing title when all they barely pick up anything from the original. I guess it earns them a few more bucks from people who liked the original.

      ***** Valve might take a long time to release games, but when they do get released, pretty much everyone loves them. Remember when Half-Life 2 came out? Many publications called it the best game ever made. A fair number of people think it still is. Valve's other games have met with similar (though not quite as superlative) praise. I think it's worth the wait for games of that caliber. Putting the best possible product out there is more important than getting it out fast. I don't think you can call them 'dickish' for that. You may disagree with it, but they're not doing it to spite you (probably not, anyway. If they are, then they're definitely dicks).

    • @Zoomy
      @Zoomy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a developer, Valve is the superior company. But in terms of their online distribution services (Steam and Origin), EA is surprisingly the more consumer friendly option. With Origin, you can get a refund "within 24 hours after you first launch the game, within seven days from your date of purchase or within seven days from the game's release date if you pre-purchased/pre-ordered, whichever comes first" if it's an EA published game. With Steam, you're lucky to get a refund at all, even if the game doesn't work at all. It's fucking ridiculous and probably illegal in most markets. It's even worse when you consider Valve's complete lack of quality control.

    EA being evil? Hmmmm...... Well, they are slowly killing Bioware, who was once one of the best RPG makers in the world. If you question this, lets compare games Pre-EA ownership(roughly 1996 to 2007 and post-EA(2007- present).
    *During the Pre-EA era we saw*--
    1-Baulders Gate
    2-Baulders Gate 2
    3- Neverwinters Nights
    4-Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
    5- Jade Empire
    6- Mass Effect 1
    Here we see some of the best RPGS ever made. These games are highly praised and are still played to this very day. Now....
    *During Post-EA we saw*--
    1- Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
    2-Dragons Age: Origins ( The best post-era game, but that is only because it was started in 2005. So it was probably nearly done when EA stepped In.)
    3- Mass Effect 2
    4- Dragon Age II
    5-Mass Effect 3
    6- Star Wars: The Old Republic
    Here we see dumbed down sequels and one MMO that has been criticized on a fairly regular bases.
    It is So easy to see what EA has done to Bioware. They have reduced them to a shadow of their former self. I really hope that Bioware can make a comeback with the third Dragon Age, but I do not see that happening. Not with EA in control and with most, if not all, the original people at Bioware gone.

      Frostfireglade Still seems a bit evil to me to be destroying a once great company.

      DarthKato But they're not destroying it. Bioware is still making heaps of money and if EA were to disappear overnight I'm sure every publisher would do their best to pick them up. Their reputation has suffered, but most people choose to blame EA for that anyway.

      I thought Mass Effect 2 & 3 were great games. The day one DLC was annoying, but that was really my only complaint. And SWTOR is also a great game at its core, but EA has crippled it by messing around with the payment model too much.

      kemj25 Meh, my problem with them is that the games gradually went from super long titles that were jam-packed with content (I have been playing ME1 for about three years now and I am sure that there is more underneath that nuget core) to a one hour shoot them up.
      ME2 was the best mix i suppose but i still think it would have been better if there were more things to do.

    EA is pretty much trying to ruin Maxis.

      Yah. The latest Sim City looks really fun, but the stupid "always online" requirement keeps me from going to buy it. I really like Maxis' old games.

      The whole release was rushed, nothing was ready. The servers were hit so hard that it took weeks to get to a playable state. When it was "playable" there were so many bugs and gameplay issues, such as cities just disappearing, losing connection to the servers, traffic being unmanageable no matter how much mass transit you put in. I had building being built on top of buildings because the game was reading zones overlapping. The always online requirement, which they said was because a lot of the computations are ran server side, which someone proved was a lie after they hacked the game and disabled the web connectivity requirement. To top all matters off, EA blamed Maxis for the whole thing. Then tried to make it up to everyone by giving them a free game from a selection of old titles that no one really wanted.

    I don't play EA games because I hate EA and because none of their games are all that good.
    Why would I buy a $60 mediocre game if I can literally get 3-6 great indie games for the same price?
    I value games by how much fun they are to play and EA games don't deliver enough on that front to be worth the price.
    They could probably publish *much* better games if they really wanted to, but everything they do publish is painfully mediocre at best.
    Star Wars: Battlefront has probably some of the best visuals of any game on the market right now, but graphics simply can't carry a game from a player's point of view.
    You won't like eating a piece of shit because someone sculpted it to look like the most delicious chocolate cake ever, but you can enjoy eating a tasty chocolate cake, even if it looks like an actual piece of shit.

    ross, i can answer your question about building design with a single, 4 letter word, "Lego", it ushered the era of the standardized cubed building design into existence.

      I always interpreted it as industry was more concerned with efficiency. Not cost or quality controls, just overall efficiency. If something that looked good caused any shred of quality to disappear, a company wouldn't do it because they might be beaten competition-wise by other companies working harder.
