Love these old machines, they had so much character compared to modern tillers, mowers, etc. Nice to see someone is fixing them up and getting them running.
If anyone can get a Simar running it is you. My Simar 25C needs literally everything, so it is sidelined in pieces until I can find another to build a complete unit out of. Simar used Exair slide valve Carburetors on many of their small to mid size machines. My 25C has a uniflow two cycle engine. You wrap the leather rope counter clockwise to put the machine in reverse! They are wacky old machines.

Had one similar , used it mostly in greenhouse beds to prep soil for flower plants and to till our garden ... brought back memories

I didn't even know they made 2 cycle engines back then, pretty cool stuff.
It has some neat features. I like how the handle can unlock and turn. It's built like a tank, LOL.....

Is it seriously designed to run backwards? Must have some kind of timing adjustment for the ignition?

It starts with a strap on the pulley in the front.
