    I had Thrips and use Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew, Bonide Systemic granules, and stickie traps with one side yellow and the other side blue and game over: done, I wanted to be organic/natural also but that didn’t work and now I use that regimen on all incoming houseplants as well: visible pests or not. I will get some Provoto to have on hand to rotate with since, as you stated, I have read that pests can become immune. I use Captain Jacks and Systemic on Begonias and my 50 other varying houseplants and zero issues with either. Pests on our houseplants can be upsetting and stressful so hang in there if you are going through this. 💛

      @@GoodGrowing Fingers crossed since as it is working for now but as us house plant lovers know, those pests can be tricky so who k owns what the future holds. I have also just switched from steeping Mosquito Bits to a liquid BTI and I just use it always as a preventative for Fungus Gnats. If I have problems beyond my current regimen and alternating Captain Jacks with Bonide Eight and End All, I’ll jump to beneficial insects. The only plant that I just saw that hasn’t responded well is my Black Velvet Alocasia.
      I have seen too many heartbreaking stories on TH-cam with pests wiping out plant collections and I want to try to avoid that at all costs. Thank you for your wonderful channel ⭐️

Damaged new growth and the silver lines convinced me. Also, I learned today when plants are stressed they send out a signal that attracts insects but also send a signal to attract insects that will rid the bad pests. Interesting and helpful I thought.

    This was a really great, helpful video. Unfortunately I have quite a few large and older plants that just started showing symptoms a few weeks ago! I didn’t want to drag out treatment, so I went ALL out- depotted everything, and sent them to the tub for rotating spa treatment of the shower hose and End All. I took all the old soil outside to dump in the garden bed and hopefully freeze to death, cleaned out all the pots, vacuumed, wiped, sanitized surfaces that the plants were near and on, then repotted everything with new soil, another end all treatment, then all the “clean plants” were sent to a quarantine room where no plants had been before, while I moved the next group to the bathroom, washing my hands between rooms.
    Then, to prevent the nymphs that fall to the soil from developing, nematodes went into all the tropicals, and diatomaceous earth into the ones that don’t like as much water. This all seems like extreme measures, but I wanted to do the most I could to eradicate the issue without resorting to pitching the plant. So after ALL of that, it seems like a day later I’m seeing even more chew hole/pocket/line things than ever, as if they came back with vengeance...
    I’m in Canada so we are limited on pesticides. But am wondering how it’s even possible during the most freezing month of the year they just showed up, and no new plants were introduced. Produce from the grocery store? Is it possible? So now I am at a loss of what to do next! Lady bugs? I feel like my cats would go on a destructive rampage to catch them hahah!!

    I lost soooooo many plants to thrips. There seemed to be a few species of plants that they were drawn to. (Philodendrons, pothos, anthuriums, palms). I had a good collection of Philodendron varieties, and they pretty much all got the thrips. All of my anthuriums got them, and one of my palms currently has them. The best thing that worked for me sadly, was getting rid of the plant. I have pets and can't use toxic sprays. Other methods just don't work. I've pretty much had to get rid of the plant. Or risk it spreading to others. It's tough. Oddly, I have a money tree, and they just liked breeding in its soil, but never touched it's leaves. It was just a breeding spot. I used the yellow sticky traps on that, and it caught a ton of the newly winged thrips. They don't fly right away, so if you touch the sticky trap off edges of the pot, as they crawl around the pot, they get stuck on the traps.

    Just two days after my large schefflera started showing signs of reinfestation, my partner decided to-incomprehensibly and for the first time ever-move it out of its usual isolated spot into the front hall right next to my large, beautiful cane begonia. The plant’s leaves were totally entwined with the begonia’s. It’s too early to tell if my begonia (one of my most treasured plants) now has thrips! I am also reading that begonia leaves are sensitive to chemicals, so I just have to pray they didn’t transfer onto it despite touching a bunch of the leaves.

    You should try spinosad. Spinsosad is a natural insecticide, it’s a bacteria that’s non toxic to humans (unless you ingest like a gallon of it). And there’s multiple brands that sell it. It works extremely well. Nothing else I’ve tried has worked for thrips and they’ve never built immunity to it.
    I also use a systemic, which I think the one I use is natural, but it can’t be used for plants you eat. But there’s other systemics that are also good for crops.

Does it damage the new growth leaves?, can you spray it all over the plants?, is it ok to have the plants inside the room (after being sprayed)? Thanks!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! Oh no that sucks!! Good that you ordered provanto though! Sooo I think the best advice would be to test provanto on a small part of your plant to make sure it responds alright.... saying that I didn't do that and just went for it. I sprayed the entire plant (leaves, stems, soil, new growth) and then just left them in my bathtub to drip dry. Once they were dry, I put all the affected plants in a different room to the rest of my collection. Not sure if that was necessary as after the first spray, most of the plants didn't have thrips again, but probably better safe than sorry (especially if you have to spray some a couple of times). I didn't experience any negative impact on the new growth that wasn't already damaged by the thrips. I hope that helps! Good luck!!

    I found a few thrips on my Philodendron Brasil in my frog vivarium. The thrips seem to prefer the Brasil over the Golden Pothos, by the way, as the Golden Pothos didn't have a single bug on it. I was wondering what you would suggest on how to get rid of them, seeing that I cannot use any pesticides, soaps or oil in a vivarium with frogs (White's tree frogs). The setup is bioactive (6-7 months old and established), with coco fiber as substrate, and large colonies of springtails and white tropical isopods as cleanup crew. Thus removing the soil will disturb the bioactive balance (kinda similar to messing up the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium), so it is something I would want to avoid if possible.
    So, how can I get rid of the thrips? Do I need to do a full breakdown of the vivarium and sterilize everything? Or would it be enough to remove all plants and leave it bare with only the soil in there until the thrips hopefully die of starvation (due to no living plants)? Do you have any thoughts or advice regarding this? I have searched the internet, youtube and reddit for answers but noone seems to have an actual answer.
    Until now I have uprooted and disposed of all the plants that I saw had thrips on them. The remaining plants might be attacked now that I have removed the thrips' homes, but I had no other choice. I have bought new plants but I do not dare plant them in the vivarium before I know what to do with this issue. Any tip or advice is greatly appreciated!

      @GoodGrowing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh no sounds like a lot of stress! I've also noticed that thrips tend to not like pothos... none of mine have been affected when many other plants have been.
      As for getting rid of them, might be worth looking into predatory mites. I got some recently from Dragonfli Ltd here in the UK and so far they seem to be working. Hopefully those would be the best to not upset your whole ecosystem. Would be worth seeing if they could help on a more preventative permanent bases as well and become part of the vivarium? Will be doing a video on predatory mites in the next month or so. I know that's a bit late for you but 🤷🏻‍♀

    • @arctica7170
      @arctica7170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GoodGrowing Thanks a bunch for the quick reply!
      I will have a look at the predatory bugs for sure! The Minute Pirate Bug also seems to be an option regarding the war against thrips, but I need to figure out if any predatory bugs can go well together with frogs. Hopefully both bugs are available and legal to use here in the Netherlands.
      From what I've read and heard is that once you have thrips they are very difficult to get rid of. So I will do a full tear-down of the vivarium and start over, actually. But the real issue lies in getting rid of all thrips in the process. If only one bug survives then it was all for nothing. And that is where the predatory bugs comes into the picture. So I have thrown away all the old plants (rip) and bought new plants (no philodendrons this time, haha) which I have thoroughly rinsed with water after removing all the soil, and given them a 20 minutes soak to drown potential hitchhikers. I'll quarantine the plants for 4-8 weeks and in the meantime make a new setup with hardscape in the vivarium. The microfauna and beneficial bugs in the soil will be removed unfortunately, because of the life cycle of the thrips. Since they use the soil as a means to pupate I won't take any chances. It isn't the most beautiful process but it allows the frogs to stay in the vivarium in the process for the most part. Luckily the frogs are arboreal so they won't spend too much time on the ground.

    I never use natural methods if I have an infestation, I have had it 2 times in 10 years, but still. Natural methods don’t work that well in my opinion, what I do is, I take my plants outside, put them in a large plastic bag and close the bag almost completely, than I spray a little Permethrin spray in the bag,close the bag and make a knot. Then I leave it for 30 minutes. Open the bag, and let it stay that way for 1 hour. Kills all insects and Permethrin is not as dangerous as many believe, don’t breathe it in, use a mask, and keep pets and children away!And than I shower my plants down with a lot of water. It works wonders.

      As isolated as it can be. I tend to leave mine in the bathroom for a couple of days to a couple of weeks. They don't get as much light down there but it keeps them away from my other plants. Good luck!

    DIATOMACEOUS EARTH All natural not harmful to children or pets! just a suggestion!

    • @meninahaquel
      @meninahaquel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DT is probably good for the thrips in pupae stage in the soil. However, it does not work for larvas on the bottom of the leaves where they like to be.

    I have a suggestion for a video! Things you can you grow from recycling your grocery! (if you haven't already) I want to have a lots of house plants! TONS Sadly I only have a nice spider (2 separate babies in glass jar/bottle) a pothos cutting someone gave me that still in a glass, glass (that's awkward) and 3 small cactus I'm sure you can see I have more than some ppl but not nearly what I want!!! I remember a friend of mine had a potato plant and it had pretty purple heart leaves. I know Romain Will re~grow because I do that often (I'm regrowing one now in a 20oz coke bottle cut off)! I t doesn't live forever till I eat it! lol is there anything other than the "Avocado"? Is there a whole video in this? haha oh, ps have you ever hear of "Diatomaceous Earth"? All-natural ground-up seashells it slices up the pest's body the way I hear it! I'm sure you know all about it if you are all-natural.

      It seems like harsh stuff, it damaged some of my begonia leaves, which makes me think it actually might seep into the leaves and kill the eggs the thrips laid. Im not 100% certain yet though.
