I was in one of those crowds. I was mesmerized. I had never seen or heard anything like them. They became immediate faves and I still love them through Third.
Way ahead of there time Three chaps using their imagination and wicked talent to make themselves sound as full as a 4 to 5 piece band would I love there first album from end to end, I have a daughter who plays drums and I'm trying to make her see that music can be very expressive so long as she keeps an open mind.
Absolutely correct. I saw them open for Hendrix on this first tour of American in San Antonio. The crowd didn't know whether to shit or wind their watch. If they came out NOW, they would hailed as geniuses.
The solution to make your band sound bigger is: A. Drop the guitar, pick up keyboards, you can essentially become three guitarists that way. B. Have a mental drummer C. Play "The Bazz" (bass with fuzz).
1st time seeing this. It's amazing how alike they sound in the studio as they do on the first album. I noticed the two edit points, and to think this whole Jam existed somewhere on tape. Thank you so much for sharing this!
Grande filmato in condizioni eccellenti dei primi SOFT MACHINE !!!! Robert Wyatt voce e batteria e percussioni Kevin Ayers chitarra elettrica e voce e Mike Ratledge organo !!!!! Great post THANKS !!!!!

This video is the reason I decided I wanted to learn keyboard ten years ago, Mike Ratledge is so underrated.
He was voted top jazz organist in the 1972 (I think) Melody Maker poll.
@Philos Johnson he did some music for commercials I think and has been working on some project on and off for a couple of years now
@Philos Johnson Mike Ratledge ha totalmente chiuso con la musica, e non suona un pianoforte da 22 anni!😥😥
Old French TV program which was exceptional , can't find this level now, fy far.
Do you use a fuzz on your organ??
The ways these guys look and sound, you can tell they are right at the edge of the counterculture - the band that other bands tried to emulate.
The Soft Machine is one of my favorite debut albums, there's just something about Robert Wyatt's voice and Mike's lowrey that gets me every time
These guys were just too great for their own time....I saw them open for Hendrix on this first tour of the States....the crowd was like "WTF"?

I wish I could’ve seen them live, I wasn’t born until much later
I Saw one night on dreams at Beatles playing at Abbey Road & beside was Pink Floyd making the Piper...
You were beautiful kevin, your music will never die. RIP

Geez, Wyatt was such a good drummer. I can't get enough of it. Thanks for posting this.
This one and 'Why are we Sleeping' are friggin' awesome!

Wish Daevid Allen had stayed longer though
I think he would have stayed longer, but when the Softs came back to the UK from France the authorities wouldn't let him back into the country.
[05 November 2021] Some marvelous scat-singing from Robert Wyatt. I love it!
Rip Kevin Ayers , don't worry, you're in a better place now... :'(

still love it!!
If Soft Machine kept doing stuff like this they would have been as big as Cream or ELP.
Soft Machine were better than either of those groups
Sadly the whole thing fell apart after Wyatt was kicked out.

can someone please tell me what kind of lowrey organ is he using? thanks

To get that aggressive tone, he's running a fuzz pedal through it :)

Awesome music, but the getup looks a bit ridiculous today (to my opinion, completely superfluous). But musically, it was more than stunning.
Looks like the get up gave The New York Dolls, Kiss and Glam rockers a few ideas though
