Thank you for watching today's Dragonlance Setting episode! What do you think about Caramon Majere? Did he get enough time to shine, or did he fade away in his later life too much? Leave a comment below.

Caramon since more like a victim, than the hero his archetype would lead him to be. I find it to be an interesting idea for a caracther.

I saw Caramon as having a heart of gold. I never saw him as "an addict" like Raistlin, even when he was an alcoholic. He was in incredible pain he couldn't do anything about. He's been the protector of his brother his whole life, it's WHO he was. If his brother was in danger he had to protect him. Watching a family member make dangerous, disastrous life decisions and watching them suffer the consequences and then go do it again and again is like a black hole in your heart, sucking everything into it. Caramon gave and gave and gave until he couldn't anymore and just had to let go. This is how I saw him, a tortured soul, a victim of his brother's addiction.

I’m just reiterating the authors words, but I definitely share your thoughts here.

I haven't read anything past Spring Dawning in about 20 years but I will say this. From my memory, Caramon is my favorite hero of the Lance. Taking him from basic warrior to breaking him down to building him up. I really loved his arc.

It was very 'basic training' mentality for Caramon in the Legends trilogy.

Caramon was one of the few characters that could fit into any story. He was a slave, a hero, a drunk, family man…

He was great, and truly compassionate as well.

I named my son Cameron after Caramon, loved this character and the complex relationship with his brother Raistlen

As a recovering addict I like the parallels you drew between Raistlin and his lust for power through magic as an addiction. Especially the "taking even the thought of attempting to change" line. I understood and related with a lot of his decisions

As a kid first reading the books I never understood him. It wasn't until many years later that I understood the character. His relationship with his brother though had its loving moments was toxic and he needed to see that in order to be whole himself instead of being a shadow but it was a battle for him I think right up until his end.
    Excellent video!
    Thank you

Thanks! There is so much more complexity to these characters when filtered through our own life experience.

In the 1st trilogy Caramon was the Conan level strong fighter of the group. Plus I loved how they kept describing this arsenal of weapons he carried around with him.
The 2nd trilogy he became one of the greatest warriors of his generation thanks to his gladiator training and was The General of the Army of Fistandantilus.

Raistlin never gave a squirt of piss for his childhood friends or his twin brother, Cameron. It was clear in the books that the only thing Raistlin was interested in is being the badest mo fro Krynn could offer. And he did so.

This perspective belies his action in his life.

Did anyone ever explain how the Twins’ surname is THE NAME OF A GOD?

In one of the meetings novels I believe. It says their father was fond of Majere and took the name.

I think the women in Dragonlance come way to easily to the main characters if they were human or elf they all got married in some way or had a kid. You could have mirrored Caramon after Beowulf and made him a non married childless king whos last deed was to slay a dragon for its treasure but succumbs the dragons venom after the clash. But no man in Dragonlance had the strength of 30 men as did Beowulf. They were all pretty much cucks except Soth Knight of the Black Rose.
