    I suspect that a lot of why it feels like work is also because you know that your livelihood depends on the outcome of the project and making sure that all the things you're trying to remember while filming/streaming happen.

    I feel the same when playing video games as a working adult.. I started streaming on twitch and even though I only have 10 followers, having 1-4 people watching me makes it feel much more purposeful and I love that

    "Enough nerd stuff..." That's literally all I'm here for haha.
    I also started a business from a hobby, but it was more out of desperation than anything more positive. I couldn't find a job, and knew how to bake. Started at a weekly flea market, and eventually opened a small bakery, and then a larger one. Now though, 5 years on, I don't enjoy it nearly as much, and I don't even enjoy eating the sweets we make anymore. It's interesting.

    I've often been asked why I didn't try to turn my art into a profession and I learned early on (in HS specifically!) that one of the biggest things that will get you further is by doing things other people want or will pay for. Everyone wanted to pay me to do a painting or a drawing and I felt VERY unmotivated to do that. I loved doing it for what I got out of it and what I could see in my imagination, but that never felt marketable. I've considered moving to the beach and just doing paintings of the beach because people will buy that and I think I'd be good at it, but the idea of making money off of my art isn't enough to motivate me because, in the end, I think still doing the type of art I like would still be a hobby and I'd be too sick of "work" to do it as a hobby at that point. Congratulations to you guy for having the resolve to stick to it. I'm not saying you guys did it for the money, but I'm saying you guys have ambition, which is something I never had.

    These "behind the scenes" talks really are very valuable. Many are in the same boat, recently I decided to change careers as well (even though it is a big risk and I didn't even have a lot of experience with it)... going from science to a bit of a hobby... programming. And though I think I won't be the type for a regular IT job, I met someone in my other hobby (astrophotography) that made a profitable program and wanted me to join him. What are the odds right!? :) If it'll work out, I hope so, but I also think you have to be realistic in that many of these endeavors do fail. I never made programming or astronomy my work, because I always thought it would totally spoil my enthusiasm for it. Maybe I was wrong in that, I will find out. :)
    I am wondering sometimes, you guys seem soooo stressed when something might not work out. Which makes sense as it costs too much time, but doesn't that make it less enjoyable?

    • @EvanandKatelynPodcast
      @EvanandKatelynPodcast  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      the stress/pressure to have something work out is sometimes more present because we do this for a job, but some ways less present. For example, if the reason we're making a resin desk is only because we need a desk, and the project fails, well then we'd feel like we just wasted a bunch of money. If the reason we're making a resin desk is because we wanna make a fun video and the project fails, we can still get a fun video out of that. The main stress is that by turning it into a video (aka work) we're on a set timeline so we have less time to figure out how to handle fails

    Computers, programming, Linux, etc were my passion growing up. As I became an adult and decided to make technology my career I have discovered the value of work life balance. It was easy to take something I enjoy and blur the boundary between work and personal life. This wasn't good. As I've grown older I discovered the value of leaving work at work and being intentional about other activities outside of Computers, like playing video games and board games, exercising, rediscovering electronics and hardware making, cooking new recipes, and reading. I'm so much happier with more balance even though work has turned some things that I used to enjoy into things that are no longer fun. Having outside activities helps me regulate.

    I can totally relate to the all weekend gaming, it took me a week to get over the vr submersion and function as an adult and go back to work. i'm very consciences about how much time i spend on games these days.

    • @sebastianjost
      @sebastianjost 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I felt the same for the past few years every time I did a weekend or day like that.
      Now I have found that it really helps me to see gaming as relaxation. I'm working until I need a break and when I need one, I use those breaks for gaming.
      However this only works for games where you can easily play for a short time. Games that take more time to get something done are slightly different though.
      I reserve those for days when I'm feeling so tired or exhausted that I can't work. Basically for when I need longer breaks.

    Definitely resonated with me about the video games. I like to play video games, but I do not prioritize them because of life in general (i.e. working full time, being a homeowner and having a 2 year old). Those are all higher priorities than gaming and gaming seems silly in comparison. However, I have decided to make more of an effort to try and carve out some more time to do something that I enjoy. Watching you guys play 7 Days to Die has made me want to start playing and I even asked my childhood best friend to play it with me. Life is too short to not indulge in things you like to do.

    On the topic of social media being "work" compared to the hobbies: Social media is often your boss in some way now. Instead of a human boss telling you do to [thing] better or by a certain date, it's your social media numbers dictating that for you. When you're just using social media as a person and not a business, it really doesn't matter if you don't post at the most active time of day, or if you don't have the best SEO for your instagram account. It doesn't matter if one post gets more or less likes than another when you're not a business. You don't have to care about some algorithm unless you're running a business account. That stuff is so draining and weirdly hard work, plus it seems like creators are more burnt out by that than the hobby part of their work. That feeling of "I have just been told I need to do this thing I was already planning on doing, and now I don't want to do it at all" seems to be fuelled by social media numbers. I am biased as all heck though because I really don't like social media as a whole, so maybe don't listen to me!

    you know... for what's worth, all of your hobbie video ideas would be great for E&K TBD. I'd love to watch those, there would be no pressure, since it's like an extra video. People who enjoy your content would absolutely love, and people who don't even know you yet might find those funny and be curious about the main channel.So, lets say, when Evan's next piece of tech arrives, you film first impressions, or maybe when he's setting up a new cam rig, you film the process, just for fun, minor to no edit at all, just, like, extra content, you know?
    and i want a Halloween special because I'd love to see katelyn geeking out over decorations, and since we can't have parties yet, it gives you a great excuse to decor the house and do spoopy make up
    I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who thinks like this, maybe make a pool on your patreon, see what your viewers think about it?

  • @craftygamerones9494

    I think what they’re getting at with the “what makes it a job vs hobby vs chore” is that it’s work if you are making money from it and it’s a chore if your being told to do it, or you “have to do it”, some chores and jobs are fun but because you have to do them to make money you have a different mindset to those tasks
    Idk if that made any sense it was just something I thought about lol 🤷‍♀️

Work from home, full salary, loads of paid sick days, 4 weeks of paid vacation. Someone doesnt come into work? Not my problem. Retirement plan. GOOD salary. I'm so happy I chose that. I'm sad for the people that got laid off or slacked. But I chose my job just for the security. And i learned to love it.

    I have been thinking about you guys and your long term future income and security for some time. I am 71 and watch you two for entertainment and because you help me forget about the virus and being cooped up. I told you a long time ago, that I am a retired art/photography teacher. I live in a nice new house in a nice 55+ retirement community. I live on a pension and Social Security. Over the years I have had many jobs, dreams, goals, some of which were totally unrealistic.. OK, let'
    s get right down to it. While you have a great subscriber base NOW, what about 5 years or 10 years from now? What about when you guys are not young and cute anymore? Will your popularity fade? Will your income fade. How will you support a family, if that is your goal? How will you afford to save for retirement? I believe you are going to have to move into something else that brings in more money and has more long term staying power. The advantage of a teaching career is, you just do it, and at the end of 20-30 years you have a nice pension you can live well on. At least in NY. You are on a treadmill. You will not be able to let up or quit. It is all fun and everything now, but how will it wear over years and years of this? It seems to me you wll have to go back to regular jobs and do this on the side, Or, you are going to have to leverage what you are doing, to make double triple, the money and keep the income coming, even when you are 50 and not so cute. For now, enjoy it all, but plan longterm too.

    I have a question about blogging. I’m looking to start a blog in the near future detailing my journey into woodworking. I’ve already created a bunch of articles, and I want to cite those makers, yourselves included, who’s projects were the inspiration for the things that I’ve made. I wasn’t sure if it would be best to link to another maker’s TH-cam channel (or specific video), their website (or specific article on their site), their social media platforms or all of the above. It’s important to me that I give the proper credit to those who’s plans and/or designs I’ve used in my own works. What are your thoughts?
