    The best TV game shows are the ones where even the viewing audience can play along as they watch at home. "Password" was the best in that category for sure. (As I watch these I'm also yelling out clues. HA! )

    This was the very early days of "Password". It appears the producers/host/technical crew we're still "growing into" what the gameshow would eventually become.
    I remember watching "Password" when it first premiered on television.

    Bill Cullen and Alan Ludden were two of the masters of broadcasting. When I was a child it was these two men and some others whose voices were the magic that convinced me that I never wanted to work. So I had a career in radio.
    Bill and Alan could have done anything in radio and TV. They were that good!

      B.) Start having a screening test of potential contestants so that never again dunderheads like these two horrible contestants get near a microphone again.

      After NBC cancelled it, the show was revived in 72~ by CBS, Bill was offered the position but declined due to his infirmaties, and the position was given to Bob Barker

    Maybe not as a first clue… but for "Celebrate" I would certainly have said, "Accomplishment!" Why so emphatic? Because people have parties and rejoice, etc. for various reasons but a celebration to a greater or lesser degree, to my mind, is always an accomplishment of some sort. One is rejoicing… but because of some accomplishment - either accomplished by oneself or those present or the society as a whole (in the case of New Years eve, etc., celebrating the accomplishment of moving through time into the new year). Not all might agree with me, but that's my take. 🙂

  • @ambientrelaxingandhealingm7552
    @ambientrelaxingandhealingm7552 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I guess it would be a couple years after this ... that "Bond" (said with a British accent?) might have been a good clue for "Agent" (especially after a clue giver had given "Secret"). 🙂

    I was wondering for, "Hero," I know that when I was younger there was a term "Local Hero…" That was part of the vernacular (there was even a cool song on the radio with that title). Did the term "Local Hero" exist in 1962 as part of the vernacular/pop culture etc.? Or was that to come later? If it was extant, I might have said "Hero" as though I'm saying the 2nd part of a phrase, etc.…

    Even from the start you can see how early Password was at this point-the intonation tricks for opposites, etc. hasn’t been established yet. Even from the first word, the perfect clue would have been “Expreeeessss” ⤴️ ....and would have been an immediate giveaway

    • @gusloader123
      @gusloader123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A.L. explained the "general idea" of the program at the very beginning. The Celebs and the contestants were half-wits.
      {[ For examples of good players: Watch one of the episodes with Ava Gabor (Hungarian was her first language, not Ameri-glish. She always did better than anyone on this episode.
      Watch episodes with Rita Moreno whose first language was Spanish (Puerto Rico born). Watch episodes with Paul Anka. His parents were Syrian and Lebanese. Great player! {As was Peter Lawford.}
      This episode was painful to watch / listen to. Words like "Celebrate", "Guest" and "Hitch" should have figured out.

      Another example of utter daftness by the contestants. How does a sane person equate "whiskers" with "pink" ? 🤪 🙄 General Ambrose Burnsides ( War Between the States era ) was probably the first man ( photographed anyway ) to have "Sideburns". He had a moustache and "sideburns" , but he shaved his chin area.
      I would have given "Burnside" and "General" for a clue, but with the half-wit contestants, they would have probably given blank stares.

    Ugh! Add this to the top 20 (maybe the top 10) WORST episodes of "Password". 🥵🙁🤯.
    Bad contestants. HOW did they get picked for the show?!? Maybe random ticket stub numbers drawn from the audience members?
    Bob Cullen was almost as bad as contestant Bob. One time in the episode they both had a brain-awake moment: --> PW was "Cable", the clue was "Transatlantic". Other than that the episode was a waste of electricity.
    Contestant Bob must have been a Junior High School dropout. The woman contestant was as sharp as a butter knife. Dorothy Collins should have taken extra "English" classes in Junior and Senior High School. uummmm and aaahhhhh and doing hand and arm movements are not words.
    Password "Hitch". Clues could have been "trailer", "rail", "post", "ball", "tie" reins", "rope", "marriage", "enlistment". This was filmed in 1962 and at least 1/4 of the TV shows and many, many movies had been made (going back to the silent movies) which have horses in every episode, and at least half of the frames. When a rider got to town, he dismounts from the horse, then ties or loops the rein around the "Hitching Rail" which is upheld by the "hitching post". Easy clue, unless all they watched were "Soap Operas".
    Since people in 1962 (especially showbiz people moved around quite often following the "plays", "musicals", "gigs", "auditions") it seems reasonable that they would have hooked up a trailer hitch to the "Ball" on the tow bar or the bumper to pull their travel trailer or U-Haul trailer to the next city.

      Second-guessing is easier than doing it live in front of a national audience. But, yeah, these players did seem extraordinarily inept. Might have had something to do with the passwords, too; I don't think the producers had a good sense of what kinds of words work well and what kinds don't.
