The Man Who Fell To Earth if you ask me, he was the main character in that, I don't think it gets enough credit.
Edit: in terms of a film he gets to do something more in that is (he is more of a side player in The Prestige). The Prestige is definitely the best film he's been in imo.

A lot of great ones, but my favorite Tesla-size cameo of his is as Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation Of Christ. Nicely envisions him as a "civilized" man puzzled by religious squabbles in the country he's occupying, while being blind to why anyone would hate the occupation. A very British version of PP but it works.

The layering of this film is unparalleled. The trick of the fish bowl and the boy saying "wheres his brother?" he is toying with us the whole time. The story like many of his, is meta - he is performing a trick on us - he shows us something espeically the whole trick of duplication, tells us how we got there with hints and still catches us with the twist. It is also one of the most rewatchable films since you see things or references throughout

The look on Christian Bale's face when the boy asks about the bird's brother is so heartbreaking. It is a complicated mixture of joy and sadness, like he has been recognized for who he really is for the 1st time, while also having a premonition that one of the birds/brothers has to die

It's crazy that Borden was so dedicated to his craft that him and "Fallon" spent years pretending there was only one of them, far before they actually did the teleporting man trick. So that no one would see two of the same looking guy together ever. To make the trick more believable.

Nolan threw so many of his broader filming styles and crazy storytelling ideas into this movie, but wouldn't start being known for it properly until The Dark Knight for the former and Inception especially for the latter. But when you come back to this one (which already deserves two viewings, and it earns it), I'd say it's one of his best.

    • @robertballard2998

I have a lot of respect for magicians. I'm constantly annoyed at how they are often depicted in popular culture as buffoons or hucksters (while I love Arrested Development, I feel like a lot of it comes from that show or how that show capitalized on a burgeoning cultural trend). If you have any idea of how many hours of practice and dedication it takes to master even a simple trick, it is humbling. You are basically elevating your reflexes and motor control to near superhuman levels. Also, since Houdini, magicians have been at the forefront of skepticism and debunking of spiritual frauds and con artists because they know what it takes to actually appear supernatural. More recently, you had the great (and late) James Randi with his (to my knowledge) still unclaimed monetary prize for any "psychic" to present him with a credible display of ESP/"magic" that he could not debunk.
People too often get distracted by the stagecraft and showmanship of magic and don't recognize the practice and talent that go into it. That's one of the (many) reasons I love this movie. Also, David Bowie as Tesla is really the cherry on the cake. I especially like how they nod to his experiments at Wardyncliffe tower and his seeming early grasp of WiFi and free power. It's worth noting that Tesla died in poverty and anonymity (Edison is the original patent troll), talking to pigeons in a hotel room. True genius is in a weird Venn diagram with insanity and psychopathy. They don't tend to fare well in the broader world.

One of my favorite movies of all time. The storytelling is so good. It’s got really good rewatch ability. The movie isn’t ruined by knowing the twist at the end. Instead you get to watch it again with new eyes and see a little more of the story each time. It’s my nth time watching this and it never fails to immerse me into the world.
It’s very interesting that you bring up the comparison between a magic trick and the entertainment industry and how both shouldn’t necessarily be a reflection of reality but rather about the escape and the wonder. It’s like the movie said, you want to be fooled. The movie from the get go showed you Hugh Jack man’s trick with the bird being killed and bringing a new bird to replace it. But the movie does a good job of distracting you and you willingly go along with it. At the same time you can’t truly enjoy a movie while criticizing every unrealistic thing about it. You have to be willing to be fooled or to be pulled into this new world to truly enjoy it.
Also i’ve always thought about whether or not it was a true sacrifice on Hugh Jackman’s part. He says he was scared of which one he was going to be that day: the one to die or the one to come out of the prestige. But his current self is always the one that came out because the other one is dead. The clone/his current self presumably doesn’t experience the drowning so it doesn’t seem like much of a sacrifice.
And I showed this movie to my friend and, like most of us, didn’t keep track of the names but she doesn’t really know actors either so the whole time we were calling them Batman, Alfred, Wolverine, and Black Widow 😅

@@SB992REBORN I’m not saying it’s predictable. I’m saying the opposite really. The movie does a good job of telling you the story so that it avoids giving away the answer (despite already showing it to you at the beginning). And even after knowing the twist, after watching the movie once, it’s still a good movie to watch again. The movie isn’t ruined because you know the twist so you can watch it over and over again. At least for me that is.

One of my favorite things about this film is how you slowly watch the moral integrity of both characters fall apart for different reasons.
When Bordon first created The Transported Man trick, without the showmanship of it all, he was doing it ethically. He had a twin who was just taking his place in the other door. They dressed differently during the day, but didn't actually start living separate lives until they involved themselves in relationships with others. Borden literally *lived* his act. His whole life, off the stage and on the stage, became the act.
Angier on the other hand, didn't want to hurt anything in his tricks, but the more the rivalry grew, the more he was willing to sacrifice (literally) to make his trick seem more real. But he literally couldn't without creating a whole other version of himself that he would then have to kill to maintain his appearance in the real world.
In a lot of ways, their dilemmas at the end of the film are inverted, Bordon, who is willing to sacrifice himself for the trick in the beginning wants to preserve himself, his brother and his daughter in the end, at the cost of his trick's secret. Angier, who was unwilling to make sacrifices of himself or his relationships for his magic in the beginning ends up turning his loved ones against him and literally killing himself every night for the sake of the act.

    When Borden and the Guard are talking, Borden says to him;
"Maybe I'm just biding my time, maybe one day I'll open my hand, get your attention, ask are you watching closely, maybe a magic word or 2, and then I'll be....gone"
And when Borden is being marched to the gallows, he asks that guard "are you watching closely?" And his last words are Abracadabra and he's "gone."
Then the twin opens his hand, throws the ball to Caldlow and gets his attention.

Ninetailedbrush is confused about Angier enlightening Borden at the end regarding the look on the audience's faces due to an earlier scene where Borden tells Angier about escaping the real world by living an act 24/7. The distinction there is that Borden is referring to the performer escaping reality while Angier is referring to the performer spreading wonder.

They told us - Borden has a twin. And we had a very look alike man who was always with Borden. Case is closed.
But we don’t believed that. Because we are expecting to be fooled. We want that. And we end up being fooled by our own wish to be fooled.

14:49 I heard that about the Tesla Tower too. It was going to serve like a wifi but instead of providing wireless internet, it was going to provide wireless electricity without the need for batteries or any internal power source. I'm not sure if it was my memory of the movie or a documentary I watched, but he did do a small-scale demo and proved that wireless (not battery-powered) electricity is possible. Also, there are a lot demos in YT doing it with light bulbs so it truly is possible but I reckon only Tesla knew how to do it in a much wider scale. In any case, that would've been wonderful--no more cables, no need to carry power banks or lug heavy generators, electric cars wouldn't need to have batteries or recharging, even remote areas could have electricity, maybe no more running out of power, just so many possibilities.

He was basically trying to do a proof of concept for the Carrington Event 1859 where people unplugged the telegraphs and such, some burned out and caught fire and others they could still work without power and bounce signals off the charged atmosphere across the planet and still communicate. I think a big delay but for back in the day it'd be like having satellites now. That kinda event now might fry a bit more than we'd be comfortable with. Missed one by about a day or three and probably got lucky with an earth quake shaking the orbit a tiny bit maybe a year earlier. Space is big and wild but to cut it that close or be double tapped by the sun that's some crazy odds in itself.

My favorite alegory is that the movie is about practical magic/entertainment/effects reptesented by Bale/Boden to special effects/CGI represented by Jackman.
In that Bale's performance is about descipline and sacrficing your life and connections to people to make something less flashy but real.
Jackman's CGI is about deluding and using a device but selling the illusion to everyone. In reality the work for it is soul crushing.

He had long wanted to work with Nolan so when he missed the chance for this movie, Nolan promised him a role in the Batman Begins sequel, the rest is history.

this is definitely one of those movies that benefits from at least 2 more rewatches because you pick up on so many more things upon subsequent watches. Nolan truly is a genius. also, Christian Bale's acting is top tier in this one as he plays both brothers and now that you know that he's playing two characters, you can totally tell when he's playing Fallon or Borden. the subtleties of both characters is so amazing to watch, especially in the scene right after Angiers' wife dies. you just know it's Fallon because you can tell he feels horrible and he has no idea which knot it was because it wasn't him. so many amazing moments like that throughout! ❤️

    SPOILERS
You said that the first time that Borden (Bale's character) was doing the shared-life thing was when he met Sarah and suddenly appeared in her apartment. But he was doing this long before then.
After Jackman's wife dies and he asks Borden "What kind of knot did you tie?" he replies "I don't remember." This is because the version of Borden that he is talking to here is not the one who was on stage that night and tied the knot - it was the other one.

First thing’s first: This is my all time favorite movie. I’ve seen it multiple times and have even read the book the movie was based on. That being said, let’s talk about the movie.
So, Alfred Borden was the combination of both Albert (Al) and Fredrick (Fred) Borden, the twins. Albert loved Sarah while Fredrick fell in love with Olivia. If you remember, he wanted her to call him Freddie.
They lived the majority of their life devoted to being a stage magician and knew their claim to fame was to be their future trick, “The Transported Man.” They willingly sacrificed their lives (as well as both of their relationships) to sharing a singular one. That is how he immediately caught the magician doing the fishbowl trick. He understands sacrifice at its core.
The biggest thing to understand about Angier is he was totally consumed with hatred for Borden and wanted to beat him. One twin, Fredrick, was also wrapped up in this rivalry.
The original Angier was long dead before his 100 show tour (that was meant to draw out Borden). Think about it, does the original teleport away or does he stay in the machine? Whatever happens, we can agree it would be consistent. Either teleported every time or stay the same position every time. First time using the machine Angier killed the teleported one. Second time we assume he was drowned under the stage because the other one was talking to Cutter and the astonished business owner to secure his theatre. Therefore, Angier willingly killed himself over and over again to “beat” Borden. He sacrificed all.
In short, this story is all about sacrifice and what toll it takes on everyone around them.

As I understand it, Tesla believed that electricity could be harnessed from the environment itself. Wireless energy is the best way to describe it. Obviously, if you could make this concept work, energy could just be available to everyone, it would be clean, sustainable, and free. My understanding is that there are people still working on this concept to try and get it to work; if you could get it to work, it would be a revolution to how our economies and daily lives function.
Tesla also had a number of other great ideas, but this is the main one I know him for
This is one movie that I never see talked enough about. And here's the fascinating part; it's following the book loosely but the author still loved the movie.

If you think about teleportation, it really is just long-distance cloning. There would HAVE to be two of you existing at the same time. If not, a number of things could just simply kill you.
You step into teleporter A, and your body is analyzed and broken down. Your body's information is received and rebuilt in teleporter B. But what if there's a communication error, and you are rebuilt inside-out? What if there's a power failure halfway through being broken down, and only half of you arrives in teleporter B? What if teleporter B is simply offline, and your data is stuck in the buffer until power is restored?
So, you would instead want it to be cloning. Rather than your body being destroyed in A immediately after analyzing it, it is rendered unconscious. You have to be successfully rebuilt in B, and then that person chooses to destroy the body currently asleep in A. This verifies that you made it through, and no longer require your original. B has to choose in order to leave his chamber, to prevent people from cloning themselves. If B doesn't make a choice, he is destroyed instead, and A is woken up, and informed of the error.
But this form of digital cloning also opens the door to a way of immortality. With that digital buffer, you could in essence save your file at a point in time, your earliest teleport. If after a few rounds, your body suffers transmission errors, cells being just a touch off when being rebuilt, you could reload your first body, and arrive again as if it was your first teleport again. Sadly, you would still have only the memories you had when you made that first teleport, so you would feel as if you had lost time, and woken up in the future. This concept is used in the game SOMA, as a guy volunteers for a brain scan, and then he wakes up WAAAAAY in the future, in an underwater facility. His brain scan was saved, and the computer was randomly grabbing staff brains to be reloaded, and grabbed his, as it was one of the base brains used to develop the software. So as far as the character, Simon, is concerned, he went in for a brain scan in Toronto, and woke up under the sea, in the future.

    • @jean-mi1825

That's the basic concept for teleportation in John Carter Of Mars.

    • @IrishGuitarGaz
      @IrishGuitarGaz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Although the amount of information involved is at two different extremes, the basic concept you describe above is no different to copying a simple computer file. Or even 'moving' a computer file - which essentially just copies it to a new location, then deletes the original. The file is never moved in the physical sense that we humans would move from place to place. You have an original, you create an identical copy, the integrity of the copy is verified, and the original is either kept (copy) or deleted (move).
If you haven't already read it, the novel Mindscan by Robert J Sawyer is a very interesting fictional work which touches on the questions around consciousness and what defines a person, and parts of it relate to what you've written. It's set in a near future where wealthy humans can transfer (aka, 'copy') their consciousness to android bodies which essentially allow them to live forever if properly maintained; their original human body then dies offworld and the android body assumes all legal right to continue as that person. It explores what happens when a person changes their mind after the process is complete and the legal & philosophical ramifications of trying to work out which version of that person is now the 'real' one and legally recognised as such.

Both brothers are the act. They both were/played Borden and/or Fallon at different times when seen together, so at any single point in time, the brother playing Borden, might not be the actual Borden, the husband to Sarah, or he might be. When Sarah announces she's pregnant, for instance, the "Bordon" reacts as if he is a thrilled husband and quickly says "We should've told Fallon" because the real Bordon had just left as "Fallon."

In answer to your question at around 50:45 about when they started doing the trick:
They were always doing it. The first chronological scene we see is Freddie, the brother who loves Olivia and will end up dying. He's the one who says the Langford double is the knot they should use. The next scene after that is where Borden and Angier go to see the Goldfish Bowl trick. _That_ is Alfred, the brother who loves Sarah. Of the two, he's the ingénieur who designs the tricks. He's the smarter of the two, and I think he's the one who thought of the trick. But he's not a performer, where Freddie is, and Freddie is the one who understands the thrill of the look on the audience's faces.

This is based on a book, but I think it works even better on screen! I also think that often the comments in this movie mean more than one thing, like Angier about truly seeing, which isn't just towards the audience but also at Borden who had been so focused on Angier he didn't see the countless others around him. In other words, he didn't see how the trick was done... but at the end I don't think Borden cared anymore and that is in some ways a happy ending. Angier never stopped wanting to know how Borden's trick was done, "never taking his eyes off the ball" and therefor missing it.

You say you are not so familiar with Michael Caine's earlier work: I would especially like to recommend the 1972 film Sleuth (there is a later remake which to me is much less interesting, better to see the original). Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier were both nominated for best actor for that movie (but lost to Marlon Brando for The Godfather). No one else seems to have reacted to Sleuth, which is a pity, because it's a truly extraordinary movie, and one that should especially appeal to anyone who likes the kind of guessing game we see in The Prestige. A major hit at the time, it deserves to be much better remembered, and should not be missed.

What i enjoy is the morality aspect. You dont know who to root for really, until practically the end, when the movie reveal who is the most morally bankrupt of the two. The fact that the twins shared life, so they both could be "the man in the stage", despite the difficulties, while Angier didnt even though in making a copy of himself, a literally copy, and collaborate with him in the same manner (he didnt even though in turning, as its show by him asking who was Fallon). The ego of being the one standing, the only one, came so natural, he didnt even though of it, not even with another him. He has to use even himself to strike back at his nemesis. He could have enjoyed every advantage of a double for life, but he has to fuck with the other guy.
