    "Before Jerry decided to open The Grateful Dead Movie with Gary Gutierrez's magnificent animated sequence, we had original slotted this version of Uncle John's Band to open the film. When we produced the DVD of the Movie in 2004, we felt it was appropriate to open the Bonus Songs feature with this version of Uncle John's Band. This was produced from the original 16mm camera negative." - David Lemieux

    Man, the biggest flaw with these 73 - 74 shows are those vocal mics. I forgot how Kreutzmann described them, but they really did a disservice to the vocals.

    • @jpwjr1199
      @jpwjr1199 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Christopher Orman My hunch is that if you were listening out in the audience you might not hear how unnaturally compressed the vocals seemed (not that the Dead at this point were at their peak with harmonizing as it was) in the final mix, and I think for the Dead, especially at that point, the benefits far outweighed the singular deficiency. The WOS allowed for the musicians to actually control the final mix themselves since they could hear the actual sound source behind them. Bear Stanley said he designed it so after the first couple of tunes, he wouldn't have to touch a fader for the rest of the night - *he* *could* *just* *walk* *away* *from* *the* *board* .
      That's huge because under normal conditions, musicians are often, it not almost always, slaves in a sense to their soundman, who can make or break how they actually sound to the largest swath of audience. If you want evidence of this, look back at Phish's performance for Genesis at the "R&R HOF" lol. I guarantee you the men and women running the board were NOT theirs. And they sound like she-ite as a result. They were effectively sabotaged.
      It could also explain why the musicians of the Dead all sound so sensitive toward one another during this WOS 74' period since unconsciously, or consciously, they had to be aware of their heightened responsibility (which in this case is a healthy one) for what the audience was hearing.

    • @SamHarrisonMusic
      @SamHarrisonMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's the phase cancelling they used to stop feedback by double micing everything. to have speakers behind them and not have the squealing noise, they would subtract the signal from the lower mic from the upper mic. Very, very clever stuff! Invented by the Owsley chap who's LSD factory supplied most of the US at the time. It sounds lame on the recordings, but from what people say it was the best sounding rig around at the time.

    • @christopherorman5769
      @christopherorman5769 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SamHarrisonMusic I have heard about the technology and why the Dead used it. I'm sure live, it sounded great, but it does undermine the recordings. The PNW box set, for example, has some of the band's best playing -- ever -- in my opinion. But the vocals are marred by those microphones a bit. Is it still listenable? Without question. But sometimes, I've thought how great these shows would have sounded had they used the rig they used in '72 and didn't need the phase cancelling.

      @jpwjr1199 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@christopherorman5769If it's the recordings that are at the Crux of it for you, I'm sure with the technologies that exist, there is software out there that could isolate the vocals and put effects on them that could improve their sound, then you could reinsert them.

    Just watched the 7/7/89 Loser. On November 9, 1979 I travelled from my home in Hamilton, Ontario, 50 miles west of Toronto, to see the Dead at Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo. I had little clue about the band except for Truckin' and Casey Jones on Top 40, but then I wanted to go to every rock show I could. Early Mydland performance. So I am sitting at the other end in the hockey rink from the band. Show ensues. Good sound. About an hour in of 3 1/2 hours they played Loser. I was transfixed by the solos and the "out in the country" choruses. That song, that night, changed everything for me about the Grateful Dead.
    Even though I had a mounted poster of the Blues for Allah album cover 3 feet by three and the album itself before that concert epiphany. I wish I had more boots of Franklin's Tower.
    Even the lyrics of Loser are so quintisentially American. Last fair deal as opposed to Trump's version of the deal.
    Anyway, thanks for letting me write about a great song, which I think was on a Garcia solo album.
    Plus, I made a mission of going to Dead shows in Buffalo on Indepdence Day. 1986, 1989, 1990.
    Best Dead swapping with Dylan/Heartbreakers as headliners in 1986. Our concert bus was caught up in traffic, so by the time I walked into Rich Stadium, I could only hear Tennessee Jed.
    However, during the usual 45 minute Dead intermission, rain clouds moved in. We knew we were going to be wet. The band comes out with Cold Rain and Snow and Looks Like Rain. Great! Appropriate! What other band would tailor its song list based on meteorological conditions?
    As fab as that was, a better moment, for me, was during Dylan and the Heartbreakers playing Refugee in Buffalo on Independence Day.
    Even as the cynical misanthrope I am, that moment grabbed me as the idealism of America. I would like to hear Bob Weir's take on current US reality. It's scary to the rest of us.
    Then China Cat/Rider. Around the time of sun's gonna shine lyric, the sky cleared for the rest of the day.
    We, as the audience, probably thought more influence on reality than we did.

    In regard to David Lemieux's comment on the video, I am not surprised that this version of Uncle John's Band was his first choice to open the movie. I haven't heard every performance of this song, but this is the finest I've heard. Amazingly beautiful. I've sat and listened to it over and over. They were really "on" that night. Every song that night was as close to perfect as any group of human beings can come in music. October 17, 1974.

    I'm not really a Dead fan. But this is one of my favorites. And I have a story. When my daughter (now 26yo) was finishing 6th grade, her science teacher sent the class home with an odd assignment: bring in a song written by musicians who used drugs. So of course, I played Uncle John's Band on the stereo. She said "They're not singing in tune." And a second later, "It's better this way." So it went on her iPod. I don't know what was going through that teacher's mind, but I thank him.

    The last time I went to see the Dead was at Winterland. Not this show though. It was 1967 or 68. I do not think there was a straight head in the entire auditorium. Winterland was the venue Bill Graham used when the bands on the ticket were too big for the much smaller and intimate Fillmore auditorium. Both of course were in San Francisco. Fillmore was a dance hall. Had a stage but no seating. Well, there was a bar downstairs and a smaller one upstairs in the balcony, where you could grab a chair and maybe a table. I am pretty sure there was no alcohol served because you did not have to be 21 to get in, and 21 was the legal drinking age in California. Winterland was a much larger auditorium with rows of seating and was used for hosting productions like the Ice Capades, or Ice Follies.

      The bar was open! I remember as I was there too. I was even there when it was the Ice Follies believe it or not. My grandma took me there and at the end of the ice show, a man came skating up to her and handed her a bouquet of roses! I was only 5 or 6 years old at that time. I have no idea why I remember it but my old grandma sure deserved those roses!

    I'm trying desperately to get my band Traveler's Fold some presence. It's old school jam band rock n roll the likes of the Dead, Widespread, Phish, the Band, etc. Please check it out and give our dual album releases Dog Tooth and River Bend here on TH-cam a listen; it will give us a sorely needed morale boost and I promise you won't be let down by what you hear; thank you.

    All music sounds great when you're tripping. Sober these guys are atrocious

      I have never, not once, in 20+ years of listening to the Dead needed to augment my senses to enjoy their music. I really feel for people that seem to have missed the whole point of the band.

      Ya. All music sounds good when your tripping. Thats why i always fire up some vanilla ice about an hour after i dose. Gd is not for everyone. But you are here listening and commenting. Haha

      Sounds like this really only applies to you. They aren’t atrocious...that’s a fact. They’re fantastic musicians...now if you don’t like them that’s a different story. If you don’t like em don’t watch em

      Also not all music sounds great when you’re tripping. Bad music sounds worse. Obviously you heard something good in their music to make you say that.

      Nah but really. You couldn't be any more wrong. Cheers though.

    Worst vocal performance ever of this song?

      Ok it's a bit shaky at times, but when they all sing "how does the song go?", it stopped my heart.
