Something to add here: no other manga story showed us the peak of their protagonist in so much mood of joy! And to me, this is the core Oda's message to all of us: the only way to win, even maintaining the greatest power in the world, is joy 😊
Gear 5 is a Genius powerup! Oda could've kept Luffy's fruit just the Gomu Gomu no mi and the awakening would be very similar. The ability to perfectly control his own rubber body and make his surroundings and opponents rubber as well. So he'd still have very cartoony stretching powers. But the fact that he's Zoan gives him an added strength and speed boast when awakened. As well as the fact that Zoan abilities are unique in that they can be trained and made stronger just like Lucci said in Water 7. All this not to even touch on how great the themes of Nika and Joyboy and liberation tie into the story and Luffy's character.
It is a genius powerup for all the reasons you mentioned, and also for the fact that it embodies Oda's and Joyboy's will to just make people smile. He knocked it out of the park with this idea and the way he tied it all together.

I just meant that if he just had a paramecia type fruit he would only have rubber powers when awakened and they would still be similar to what we see from Gear 5. Obviously Gear 5 can do more than that which is why its awesome. I just think people focus on the cartoony rubber and imagination parts so much. I wanted to also mention the fact that it being Zoan also adds the Physical power boosts and the ability to make the devil fruit powers stronger.
hate to be that guy but pretty much every DF can be trained and amde stronger. Crocodile said so in Alabasta, even earlier than Water 7. Still pretty good point.

Gear 5 really gives off Roger Rabbit/Jim Carrey’s Mask vibes and I’m here for it.
Sengoku's Devil Fruit is also a fruit that based on a eastern diety, The Buddha. Plus, The Buddha is also known for beating Sun Wukong and sealing prior to the events of the Journey to The West stories. He beat him by challenging him to get out of his hand. But because the The Buddha had the power of Nirvana, a power that makes you become one with the universe. After one leap, Wukong was still in his hand because the Buddha's hand was the universe. Hence when Sengoku said "Your right in the palm of my hand!". It just clicked for me.
Not just the transformation but Luffy's VA really made it more badass

The best One Piece, a storyline that has been built for more than 20 years. everything is very neatly arranged. "In my opinion" there isn't an anime/manga that can make a storyline as good as one piece. I hope Oda Sensei will always be given health so he can complete this story until it's finished🎉❤
What makes One Piece liked by many people is because of its adventures. Travel from island to island, save empires from dictators, free people from colonialism, defeat evil rulers, etc.
One Piece, my best friend on Sunday, accompanies me with stories that are never boring, provides energy and inspiration beyond measure, and makes Sundays more meaningful.

The rubber tree is the "Banyan Tree".
The word "Banyan Tree" is called "Nika" in the Dhivehi language of the Maldives.
The Kyushu region, where Eiichiro Oda was born, often produces rubber trees.
Incidentally, "nika" has long been an onomatopoeia in Japan, meaning a smile.
Nika is associated with Indian mythology.
Indra in Indian mythology is the god of thunder.
In Buddhism, he is called Taishakuten.
In some countries and regions, he is called the Sun God.
Indra is an adversary of "Asura" (Blackbeard), who has three faces.
Indra travels on an elephant (Zunisha).
Indra's brother is "Agni".
Agni is the god of fire.
Agni's head has two faces, front and back.
This probably represents "Ace" and "Sabo".
Indra is also known as "Shiva".
Shiva is the god of destruction and rebirth.

What I loved is a nice little detail in the animation where Luffy's standing up and his body deforms and bounces around like his heart is drumming louder and stronger than the rest of his body. Like in cartoons when a character's heart bounces out of their chest.
I feel like the cartoon turn here is sooo fitting for 2 reasons. It matches Luffy's personality and shows the contrast from the fight before, how easy it is for him now! fantastic artistic choice. love it
I love these two, this dude reminds me of that TH-camr who does the jazz sessions.
I can't believe any manga readers were actually disappointed in this episode. They adapted the chapter entirely, they added scenes to show Luffy's transformation we never got in the manga, enhanced the entire Gorosei scene with the intercut scenes of Luffy jumping around, and went full on Looney Tunes. Manga readers wanted more gear 5 like they didn't read the chapter, you literally only see Gear 5 for like, 4 pages out of 17 in the chapter. So perfect, worth the wait, cannot wait, One Piece anime has become must watch for me going forward as long as the animation keeps up after Wano.
I am, the episode is a mess.
I loved the Animations (some, not all), soundeffects and the acting. But wth was that Edit?
The pacing killing the hype, random cuts, excessive repetition and closed ups... the camera moving around for no reason (this is ANIME dude)... every 5s a new music with total different tone...
I'm sad...
Seriously , i loved the episode so much . I was being laughing all the time .oda giving us more than what we expected , but , the reason why people did critique it cuz they used alot of old sound effects that people dont love anymore , and overdosing the goofy animation and sounds both more than usual cartoons , also some framerates are so fast that u cant understand if u didnt see the manga , but at general it was amasinnnng . If u didnt slile even one time u cant be a normal human .

Most people agree that some of the more popular Shounen anime protagonists are based of Sun Wukong from Journey to The West. Like Goku or Naruto. This could apply to Luffy to. But I think that he is based of more of Wukong's inspiration, Hanuman, a monkey faced god from Hindu mythology. As a child he wanted the sun. Thinking it was a fruit. Hanuman is also called the son of the deity Vayu (Wind god).
Just rewatching it... Man luffy's Voice actor did an amazing job ❤ ofc the animators too . This episode made me cry and the happiest at the same time.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed Hiyori's scene, so many people were complaining about it last night. Admittedly, I also thought it ruined the mood at first, but looking back, it's actually a good moment with some solid animation (Orochi's burning).
There's also nowhere to put it it's happens at the same time putting it anywhere else and people would complain that it interrupted the fight.

The best parte that i like more is when he deflect kaido fire blast with the ground. what big brain way to use is power só good and is perfect for oda to use is imagination so hyped for what's coming next

I have been an anime/cartoon fan only (since 1990), and I was blown away. The animation was next level, and the transformation was from "left field."
It was during wano that I was inspired to build a real-life anime city.

"i am whitebeard" is one of my favorite OSTs of the entire show. It builds up such a gloriously ominous feeling that things are dark now, and they may very well grow darker before the end but also that there IS an unshakable force of good coming to save the day and spread hope among the opressed peoples of the world.

I absolutely loved it in the manga and even more now in the anime as I´m more of an anime watcher, this was so much fun! Its uninhibited and free animation to the greatest extremes with as much chaos as possible, that parallels the themes in the story and Sun god nika bringing smiles to everyone around him well also being unshackled to do what luffy wants in a world that is subjugated by its authority and justice of the Government. this is really how oda wanted to represent luffy's new form and I think its very unique and something never done before and its luffy personified to every degree. It fits perfectly to the themes of one piece. What more to say other then oda's is a genius!!

One Piece is the greatest story ever told. You can see the 20 years of build up to Sanji's backstory, and now we go back and you can see all the little signs and hints that it wasn't just a rubber fruit. I was thinking Luffy might be Lunarian before we got an explanation about his awakening but it makes perfect sense now. I have not run into a story before that is so expertly crafted!! Love your reactions guys!

Basically he’s just a gag character now he bends the rules of his universe, I don’t recall any zoan affecting objects and floors like a paramecia, like hacki does nothing to him, he still has that rubbery effect in his body and the way he punches through kaido like a cartoon and him alone bouncing a fire blast, he makes no sense bc he’s legit messing with reality in a cartoony way.
This episode made me remember just how salty I am that Hyori wasn't the one to take out Orochi.
