Oh how I have missed hook of the week! Thank you John for yet another great lesson!
My pleasure!
Me too. Thank you John.
Wow that came together so well, as always your skills are amazing. Too bad the average person can’t fathom the skill and work it took to make that happen. Great project!
Great work. I am kind of a handyman, jack of all trades myself but that kind of skill I really would like to learn. Of all the blacksmithing youtubers you are by far the best.
Great work. Sad to say but only other blacksmiths (which I consider my self as only the very basic novice) will appreciate the level of skill this takes. What little I know I have learned from your channel.
Glad it was helpful!
"Outta my head and onto the anvil." Inspiring!
Oh la la she’s a beauty……well done master. Nothing like Sunday hook of the week. By the way, love your wax brush 😄😀😄 Enjoy your day John.
Bout time for a new wax brush, that one done burned all the bristles off.
That's a cut above any other hook I've seen John. Spectacular work mate.
Thanks 👍
Always looking up to you, sir! Fine work! Not to mention, still the most peaceful channel on TH-cam, despite all the, you know, hammering and destruction.
Definitely reminiscent of the devils Blacksmith. Elegant yet simple. Well done as usual.
Getting 'An Idea' from head to crafted is satisfying and rewarding. Your design is balanced and beautiful. I look forward to seeing what comes next!
Thanks for sharing! Nice to see the coal forge at work. Designs like these are quite inspirational in many ways.
That is a fantastic hook!
I miss the hook of the week lol great work man
Spectacular design and craftsmanship, John.
You’re so interesting to watch nice job great video.
Don’t often comment but that piece was very informative for a design I’ve been contemplating. Very timely. Thanks John.

Glad it was helpful!
John this is awesome job wife loves it. have a great evening
Thanks so much
Excellent piece of work.🙂🙂
Adding some simple elements really made the hook quite elegant! Great job!
Glad you like it!
Lovely work John.
Many thanks!
That looks fantastic John!
Thanks for sharing all this knowledge John!
Wow, this is phenomenal. It's so inspiring and I'm going to get out and try to make my own one of these!
Nice job. I was surprised by the coller being only 3 sides. The decorative chisel work makes a world of difference and reflects well on the regional flavor of New Mexico.
Thanks 👍
John, as usual you've outdone yourself, this hook is an elegant piece that truly showcases your ability, I am impressed by how you make all of those forge welds look so easy. Overall a very inspired piece, thanks for sharing.
wow thats brilliant, shop time :)
Thank you
Very nice John
I love thees projects with the coal forge. More work for sure, but they keep the tradition alive.
Beautiful work!! I hope one day my work will be that complex and come out looking that good!!
Beautiful work John. Thank you for inspiring us.
Really beautiful hook!
Part way through this video, one shot made me think about how much difference there is between artistic decorative ‘hammered’ finishes on projects, and just leaving work in a beat up state😂
You definitely don’t just leave stuff beat up!
I think it’s time for a new brush for the wax! Great job as always, now my wife wants me to make one but the forge welding skills aren’t there yet…one day.
I think I have a box of little brushes around somewhere.
Definitely makes me want to get back to my forge. It’s a great looking hook.i first saw your work when it was hook of the week
Very, very nice work.
i am impressed with that hook. Great video...
Fantastic job on the Ornament Hook John. Really turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing with us. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.
This might be my favorite video that you have done for a long time. All your videos are great. I just really really like this one.
i think that flower detail at the top turned out lovely
it looks sooooooo good
Thanks! Looking good!
A really lovely hook 👍
Thank you
I started my Machine Mechanic apprenticeship in 1966, and while it was more about modern machinery, I was supposed to do my part in "Blacksmithing", as it were.
While my professional life became varied, including electrician practicalities and electronics, with me ending up as an airline pilot (retiring in 2015) my fondest memories hark back to learning how to judge the temperature of a piece of iron in a forge, about the be beat into submission. A lost art that I regretfully could not properly replicate today, even if I had the equipment (a proper forge) to do it.
Then again, why should I not enjoy the metalworking part.
Love your work.
that is very impressive!
Very nicely done, always like watching your videos. It give me ideas to work on in my shop.
Beautiful craftsmanship. Forge on. GodBless.
Thank you very much!
That is a beautiful bit of work John, an excellent example of the craft.
3:32 Now its drop forged ! Well done looks nice :)
Great project, you need to make a book of small project. I'll buy one.
真漂亮!!
Wow 😳 beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful. Just Beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
This was great. It took many of the skills you showed while making the gate and applied them to something I have the courage to try. As always, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Very interesting and great design . Thanks John
Glad you like it
Fabulously delightful, ready to install in any Royal Palace. Thank you for inspiring!
What a gorgeous hook. Excellent work, as always, John.
Beautiful work as always, definitely one of my favorite hooks you've made. Thanks for sharing!
That's really beautiful, and you make it so easy. Wonderful work.
Beautiful work
Thank you very much!
I thoroughly enjoy seeing the process from a skilled blacksmith. My forge welding skills are not there yet but…. I think I will attempt a similar style, upset where the collar is, then divide the stock above the collar to create the upper elements. Sure not to turn out as impressive, but staying within my skills while I improve. Thanks much and keep on keeping on
Sounds worth a try.
Thanks!
Thank you for the support
That's a beautiful piece, sir! Thanks for sharing 👍
It would make me proud hanging my jacket and hat on that hook.
That’s what I’m talking about! Great video John. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Great video and such a beautiful hook. Thanks mr John
Thanks for getting that out of your head and onto the anvil. Like I always say, "if ya thunk it, now ya gotta make it"
Exactly!
SUPER !!!!!!!! grazie per il video
Awesome hook.
Thank you for sharing (as always)!
beautifull craft John
Very inspiring! I haven't dared to start trying to forge weld, but it's wonderful videos like these that make me want to learn that skill! Looking forward to seeing your next videos on the gate.
It's worth learning opens up many new possibilities in your work
Wow, nice
Good you did a video...saw it on IG!!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Funny, I hate the hammer drop until I saw a video of myself working and I do the same damn thing!
Wow!
Ahh the hook of the week!! We love it! Would it have made the forge weld harder if the collar detail was done before the weld?
Welding would have forge out all of the detail.
Time stamp at 5:20 would be a nice angle to make a black bear forge version of a yule log video for Christmas
Question Years ago I sent you a " Arrow Hoe and because of shipping cost I didn't put a long hoe handle mounted on it. I've wondered if you ever got the handle on and did it work for you. Intention because we've used them around our flowers it might work for your needs also might make a DIY project. It's best for reaching under the hostas type flower or really wide busy plants that have the stray stickers or tall weeds reaching near the center that hard to reach.
Little extra challenges are skill building and creativity
For fear of burning up the thin rods because of my skills believe I'd weld the late as possible in the project.
You've help and encourage me possible 5 years and bigger reason I did realize this is a great skill to have and it's rewarding but lots of prep work.
Thanks John
I have used them some. But in our hard ground, heavier more aggressive tools are often more useful. They seem ideal for a well cultivated garden.
@@BlackBearForge I've lots of golf ball size stones and claybase soil them rocks full them and I think 01 steel I plan to try next but they are good for flower beds under limbs area.
If you ever seen a " Asian Garden Style Hoe " they have advantage I've only seen short handle and right hand models.
I've a left hand wife and she loves her left hand model and we both have long handle models for left hand and right hand for myself and built from a old shovel so pretty solid
Big THANKS you must be very busy always loving you remind people that safety is important sure you have saved a few eyes and faces or worse Sir
Looks good other than the forge weld on the back of the bracket not taking very well. Great little hook.
See, I know myself pretty well at this point.
I'll see or get the idea of making a hook like this and I'll go:
"Yeah that's doable in one piece, I'm not bothering with forge-welding"
And then spend the next 8h battling with the piece of steel to cut and forge it from one stock, probably burning a scroll off at some point because I'm trying to heat a bigger section.
-Efficiency-
Question for anyone that knows: 7:44 is there a video anywhere you did explaining this wire wrap method, and how the wire doesnt just melt off? Thank you very much. Watching this gave me some ideas to hammer out. Thank you
Just keep the wire away from the weld area so it doesn't overheat.
Superb work, nicely done. What part of your forge did you video this project in. I don't think I've ever seen this work area used in your videos.
This was done in the smaller shop should make more sense in this video th-cam.com/video/dnQ6ERIy7Oc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1FSDwqgOJMbg1wSl
Could you show using the large sheer that was over your right shoulder at the end of the video? I acquired one a couple months ago and am not sure of what materials can be cut with it, or exactly how to use it to cut. One of the handles is bent down like it is supposed to go in the hardy hole and the other handle looks like it has been hammered on, but I'm not sure if that's the proper way to use it or not.
Beautiful work on that hook using the ball to give that rounded finish is great idea, I'll have to try that.
Somebody has been watching @PaskMakes hahaha I love it!
No, I wasn't aware he did any forge work
@@BlackBearForge ah, he does, but that's not what I refer to. He has this genius series of "Scrap _Wood_ challenge" that he started way in the early days of his channel, making the most wonderful things with offcuts from a cutting board factory down the road. He even made an intro song to it that gets stuck in your head, but in a good way :)
Bless you and thank you for propagating the concept of using scraps to upcycle.
Superbe 👍
Just wondering about how much time start to finish ? Nice Job !!!
about 8 hours,including video activities.
😎 Indeed💯 ✝️🕊️
So I have seen you use the wire brush that has really long bristles on it does it work better than the short bristle ones
Its big advantage is that it gets down in between elements better. The shorter brushes are a bit more aggressive
@@BlackBearForge thank you sir
Fantastic work! What is the name of the pliers you used at the end for the delicate curls? They seemed to handle that twisting quite well. I am not sure any of my needle nose pliers would provide a similar result, plus they have teeth.
Thanks again John!!
Round nose pliers
@@BlackBearForge Much appreciated!
@@alanbutler7712 Old snap ring pliers might work as well for smaller stuff ,most of time those stubs break and people sell them for cheap.
@@armageddontools Thank you!
Coal has advantages
Some, although I did a second hook of this design in the induction forge and it worked out very well.
Being a demonstration, the mistake with the tearfrop fuller wasn't a big deal, but, how would you save that piece if it was a commissioned project?
The truth is that it isn't obvious and doesn't distract from the overall piece. So I wouldn't worry about it. If it looked bad, I would start over on that element before making the weld.
Hi John, where are you buying your casting brush at?
Blacksmith Supply
We have become so used to "walmart" stamped out products. This is how it should be, artistry at best.
Not everyone wants to pay 100$ for a coat hanger.
