One huge thing you missed is that if you can’t get the aligning right adjust the actuator pin’s connector with an alligator nose plier just a little so that the key lock cylinder can slide in far enough to be secured. Took me a long while to get that part
Thanks for the video. It took a long time to get this finished because the key would only cycle between start and run. I didn't know I needed to push the cylinder in extremely hard to get the metal latch on the bottom to engage. Everything was assembled correctly, but the latch was far from the hole. I was afraid I was going to beak something pushing that hard, but that's what it took. It's working well now.

Dude thanks for posting this I just did this job on my 2006 Jeep Liberty. And I watch your video a few times and I was able to do the job in a half hour With no issues. Thanks again.
had to do that to mine when I bought it. the part was only ~$30 at the local parts store. heater controls (behind the glove box) went out shortly after. both easy repairs. good instructional.
Fantastic instructional video! Thank you for taking the time to document the process. I just got my 2007 Liberty back on the road and saved a ton of money, because of you, OAB! Aloha!
There are a lot of videos that show this repair. This is probably the best one - or it least fit my vehicle the best. Couple points he makes are important - there are screws holding the bottom of the steering wheel shroud on. The spring goes on the knob on the bottom cover plate. There's a tiny pin that tends to fall out of the bottom cover plate - and needs to be put back in. Little stuff like this is probably why the dealership wants to replace the whole column. But for me, the most important point was when you're putting it back together, look from the direction of the key on the right side, and line everything up before putting the key cylinder back in, and I had to push up from the bottom on the replaced part to get everything to line up, then push the key cylinder back in. You know that this was the issue when you take the old part out and you'll see the ignition actuator is broken - cheap metal can't take the repeated turns.
question i wanna ask you i'm working on a 2004 jeep liberty for a friend the problem with it is when you stick the key into the ignition to start it the car won't start and the steering wheel is locked you can't turn it, is that one of the key ignition symptoms to why the car won't start?
Thanks for video, you saved my lunch with the details. I replaced actuator and switch, my daughters 06’ Liberty wouldn’t crank and I trouble shot it back to ignition switch. Thanks again!
Everyone reading this comment try this first!!! My 2006 Jeep Liberty would not crank. Was convinced it was the starter. Found an article which led to this video. $40 at my local Autozone and 2 hours later it's back up and running. Thank you so much!!!!
Left off the fact there there is one screw holding the plastic piece with the broken pieces of metal inside. You have to lift off the plastic piece above the steering column to get to that screw. Other than that great video, fixed my Jeep Liberty 2007
What are the yellow and white switches called ? I disconnected mine and a small copper piece fell out as well and now I can’t get my jeep to start after finishing installation
Hey thx a lot man, this video helped me big time. I would note that you have to make sure the gold lever (with the spring on it) in the new ignition actuator needs to be pushed in prior to reassembling so the key will "click" and engage. This was the only thing that held me up for second.
My jeep liberty horn works but have to keep both horns disconnected horn blairs unless you take 2 bolts out of air bag bracket under steering wheel then works normal but is the airbag still active?
I wouldn’t remove the air bag bolts. It sounds like possibly your clock spring may be getting worn out. Or it could be that your horn switch is getting grounded out by those bolts.
Jayden Pockrus it’s very possible it could be this. Are you getting lights on your dash. Also check your battery grounds sometime those can work loose.
Estefany Suazo If you are referring to the two wire connectors then yes there is a plastic tab that connects them on top of the connector in my video. On the car the tab faces down. Use a screwdriver to compress it down as you pull the two connectors apart.
I wouldn't think that it is the ignition switch, but it's cheap insurance to Change it out. I would lean more towards the starter relay overheating or a bad coil. Sometimes when a bad coil gets too hot they don't spark properly.
This is a good video but an important fact was left out. The T20 screws when removed allows the shroud behind the steering wheel to be removed. Under that is the black box containing the blinker and wiper handles. This must be gently pulled upwards and moved out of the way of the T10security screw on the left side holding the ignition switch to the left side of the steering column. You can't get the old actuator out or the new on unless the switch is release from the column. In the video, he skips that step. Also, after lining every up correctly with the ignition tumbler in place, l had trouble getting the tumbler pin to snap in place. It was right but just needed 1/8 inch. I used a small screw driver to pry it in place. Gently but firmly. The blinker box has no screws.
Glen Ritter What year is your liberty. It’s been a long time since I posted this video, however I don’t remember removing the turn signal switch, or prying anything. But good advice if you had to do that.
OFF AXIS BUILDS hey really appreciate it! I was able to get it out and place the ignition switch on correctly that was the reason the cyclinder wasn’t align so I popped it out and was able to get to lock in correctly, thank you tho! This video really helped me out !
10 subs Just because? Yes this can cause your Jeep not to start, however there are many other things that can cause no crank as well 1. Battery is dead 2. Starter is bad 3. Ignition switch 4. Bad ground
OFF AXIS BUILDS thanks for the info. This is our second car that doesn’t get driven much. So yesterday I went to drive it a bit after sitting for about 2 weeks, at first it did crank but would not turn over. It did that about 2 times,( i only let it crank about 3 seconds) then on try 3 no crank. I really hope the fix in your video is my same fix!
10 subs Just because? For $30 bucks I would give this part a try, but if it doesn’t fix your no start then it might be your battery or alternator. Now if the alternator went bad you will need to charge your battery or you could replace both. Good luck I hope this helps
10 subs Just because? If you are getting some crank then It could also be your fuel pump. If you have a bad fuel pump or fuel check valve then when it dits for a while your fuel could drain back to tank and take a lot longer to start.
Couple questions: 1) My car will start and I go to store. Shut car off. When I try to start again = nothing. Everything else works (Battery/Lights/Radio/Windows). It just won't crank. However, if I let it sit for a while. Hours/overnight. It will start again. Does this mean that my ignition switch is not broken? Because it started again? 2) I have a 2005 Liberty. I assume the part & repair would be the same as the 2007 video above?
Is it trying to turn over or is it not giving you anything. Also the ignition switch is just a few levers that push a switch. On my jeep one of the internal levers Broke and was basically just spinning around inside.
I have this EXACT same vehicle as you and EXACT issue. Mine starts fine and if I turn it off, it won't start again unless it sits for 20mins or so. What fixed yours??
Please can u reply to me asap I have 2005 Jeep liberty that won't crank just picked it up from the dealer drove home an now it won't start radio coming on lights wind shield wipers but won't crank or starta

I’m having an issue where the key cycles just fine but sometimes and it is rare I’ll turn the key to the start position and nothing. I’ll turn it back and forth a few times and after 5 or so cycles it’ll start. Thinking it’s the ignition switch any opinions?
is it hard to insert the key or take the key out of the ignition switch? if so you might need to replace the ignition switch? also is the key you are using worn out?
I’m just afraid since the problem is getting a little more common but it works like normal 6 of the 7 days a week. I just don’t want to get stranded SOL
@@chopperhead2677 i would start with getting a new key made and replacing the switch. the switch was only $20 bucks on amazon if i recall and it only took 30 min to install. i would try doing both.
When you replaced these items years ago, was the jeep not starting at all or sometimes you could get it to start? I'm unsure if I have the same problem as you bcus my Jeep DOES start if I let it sit.
Awesome video, thank you so much! When you took the actuator out, did it come out the bottom, to one side or the other? Did you have to take anything else off to get it to come out?
Hi - Sorry, I meant the part you replaced not the tumbler where the key slides in. Did the broken part slide out to the passengers side also? Thanks, very good video!
Joel Donatello Sorry I think it was my mistake. The part that I replaced basically dropped Right out the bottom. If I remember it was held on by one or two screws you almost need to remove everything under the steering cover.
Amazon? Did the spare work better? Mine was part of a 2014 recall. I have taken my 2007 Jeep Commander 3 times!! No charge but after a while it gets stuck. It does not turn to the start position. Terrible design.
OFF AXIS BUILDS good. I didn’t have a problem but I kept getting letters to take it in. Now I regret it. I’m going to do the repair myself. How did you find a comparable part for your Jeep? Supposedly, the dealer used Mopar. After a month of use it goes back to not turning.
Diana Krenzer honestly I took a shot in the dark when I found this part. It’s a dorman part. I have had really good luck with that brand. All I can say is I have had no issues sense installing it.
Crane 2005 Good to know. I just tackled the driver's side lock actuator. Normally, it's an easy job but my 2004 had a wrinkle in the repair that made it quite an ordeal. I'm doing a writeup now to save people the headache I had to experience. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Inez Landeros Did you notice if it was trying to start or if the ignition wasn't making any noise. The reason I ask is because it could be several things.
Crane 2005 I noticed yesterday it was making a cranking noise but turned on right away. No lights turned on the dash board. This morning it did the same cranking noise but wouldn't turn on at all.
MylifeasJ M The ignition switch that I installed only replaced the Machanical part. It didn't change any of the electrical. Yes my ignition does have an auxiliary mode on the steering column.
I’m sorry to here that. Has your been worked on previously, or is it a different year. The ones I listed worked on mine. I’m sorry you had different sizes.
Jon Snow I know right. I asked the dealership how much it would cost and I figured I could get the part and do it myself. I’m m sorry you didn’t see it sooner. Good luck to you and thanks for watching.
thank you so much!!!! this video helped me when I was at the end of my rope. tested battery, lines, relay, starter, and a few other things. took out the ignition switch actuator pin and sure enough the metal piece was broken. thanks for getting it on video and uploading for the rest of us.
Krisztián Koczó it’s in the description above. But here is the direct amazon link. Dorman 924-704 Ignition Switch... www.amazon.com/dp/B004BYX8W8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Thanks for checking out my channel. Good luck on your repair.
It wasn’t the actuator pin but the ignition switch that went out back in September. Now it’s not cranking again and that immobilized light is on again. Plus, putting that pin together to the switch is harder than it looks. Fuck Jeeps I’m never getting that shit again
GManGT It may also be called an ignition actuator. I have always know them to be called an ignition switch. In fact the Amazon part is Dorman 924-704 Ignition Switch. So either way this part is prone to breaking because it is made of plastic and is used every tim you start the vehicle. Thanks for watching please check out some of my other videos.
well then i stand corrected. thank you. this is the part that i used, Dorman 924-704 Ignition Switch Actuator Pin for Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep and i was sure it was the ignition switch but looking at it now you are right. i will change the title of this video. thank you

Yes this can cause your Jeep not to start, however there are many other things that can cause no crank as well

i would start with getting a new key made and replacing the switch. the switch was only $20 bucks on amazon if i recall and it only took 30 min to install. i would try doing both.
When you replaced these items years ago, was the jeep not starting at all or sometimes you could get it to start? I'm unsure if I have the same problem as you bcus my Jeep DOES start if I let it sit.
DearJRenae
The problem slowly got worse over time until it got stuck in the on position
Messed up how hard it is to put the pin back into the switch
M.
Sorry to hear you had a hard tim to put it back in. A lot of people have said the same thing as you. I was able to slide it back in pretty easy.
Twenty minute and all is forgiven...took longer to add a temporary pushbutton bypass while waiting for the part to arrive.
I’m glad I was able to help. Thanks for supporting my channel. Please share and subscribe.
Awesome video, thank you so much! When you took the actuator out, did it come out the bottom, to one side or the other? Did you have to take anything else off to get it to come out?
Joel Donatello when I removed it it slide out towards the passenger side. I left the key in it as I removed it.
Hi - Sorry, I meant the part you replaced not the tumbler where the key slides in. Did the broken part slide out to the passengers side also? Thanks, very good video!
Joel Donatello
Sorry I think it was my mistake. The part that I replaced basically dropped Right out the bottom. If I remember it was held on by one or two screws you almost need to remove everything under the steering cover.
Thanks for all the help, gonna attempt it tomorrow lol - thanks again!
Amazon? Did the spare work better? Mine was part of a 2014 recall. I have taken my 2007 Jeep Commander 3 times!! No charge but after a while it gets stuck. It does not turn to the start position. Terrible design.
I looked I’m my model and it didn’t have a recall. So that’s why I fixed it. I haven’t had to replace mine since this video.
So did that fix your issue?
Junkman2000
Yes it did fix my issue. It was a very easy fix to do. I think without videoing it, the job would have taken about 30 min.
I have a 2011 Jeep Liberty & I started seeing it was having trouble turning on but was able to & today it didn't want to turn on at all
Inez Landeros
Did you notice if it was trying to start or if the ignition wasn't making any noise. The reason I ask is because it could be several things.
Crane 2005 I noticed yesterday it was making a cranking noise but turned on right away. No lights turned on the dash board. This morning it did the same cranking noise but wouldn't turn on at all.
Inez Landeros
It sounds like an ignition issue. I would take to your local mechanic and have them look at it.
Does it have an aux?
MylifeasJ M
The ignition switch that I installed only replaced the Machanical part. It didn't change any of the electrical. Yes my ignition does have an auxiliary mode on the steering column.
MylifeasJ M
The job took me 30 min to do. Thanks for watching.
Good video but every size you listed is incorrect, the screws for the shroud are T25 and I’m assuming the other are TS9 as a 10 Dosent fit
I’m sorry to here that. Has your been worked on previously, or is it a different year. The ones I listed worked on mine. I’m sorry you had different sizes.
Just paid $470 for this to be done at a dealership. Wish I would have known about this before
Jon Snow I know right. I asked the dealership how much it would cost and I figured I could get the part and do it myself. I’m m sorry you didn’t see it sooner. Good luck to you and thanks for watching.
OFF AXIS BUILDS So the Video is 6 minutes, how long did it actually take you do change it?
It would of taken maybe 1 hr if I wasn’t doing the video.
This was a very helpful video I thank you!
Loman 920
It’s always good to here that I helped someone else get there car back on the road.
you should also post a video on how to Hotwire a Jeep Liberty
I lost that little pin that fell out how do I get another what is that part called??
Sorry I’m not sure if you can just order that one part.
Thank you for the fantastic video, this was very helpful. You rock Crane 2005!
+joelondonmn no problem glad I could help
Thanks man very big help thanks
Glad I could help. Thanks for your support
thank you so much!!!! this video helped me when I was at the end of my rope. tested battery, lines, relay, starter, and a few other things. took out the ignition switch actuator pin and sure enough the metal piece was broken. thanks for getting it on video and uploading for the rest of us.
Great video thanks
Glad I could help ya. Thanks for the support

charles mobley
Thank you. It wasn't as easy as most radiator changes. Thanks for watching my video. I hope it helped you out.
OM part numer! Pleeease 🙃
Krisztián Koczó it’s in the description above. But here is the direct amazon link. Dorman 924-704 Ignition Switch... www.amazon.com/dp/B004BYX8W8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Thanks for checking out my channel. Good luck on your repair.

It wasn’t the actuator pin but the ignition switch that went out back in September. Now it’s not cranking again and that immobilized light is on again. Plus, putting that pin together to the switch is harder than it looks. Fuck Jeeps I’m never getting that shit again
This is the ignition actuator NOT the ignition switch.
GManGT
It may also be called an ignition actuator. I have always know them to be called an ignition switch. In fact the Amazon part is
Dorman 924-704 Ignition Switch.
So either way this part is prone to breaking because it is made of plastic and is used every tim you start the vehicle. Thanks for watching please check out some of my other videos.
Crane 2005 the box itself at the beginning states "ignition actuator". The ignition switch is what the actuator goes into, sits right next to it.
well then i stand corrected. thank you. this is the part that i used, Dorman 924-704 Ignition Switch Actuator Pin for Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep and i was sure it was the ignition switch but looking at it now you are right. i will change the title of this video. thank you
good video i save some money thanks

First you need to be comfortable with the repair. Then stick to the problem. And no music. If you can't do that go to the 'B' of you-tube.
First off this video has help out many people. Secondly if you didn’t like it then move on.
Terrible angles
thank you !!
I’m glad it helped you out. Thank you for the support.
