Could you also make a video about types of molds in the soil and how to deal with them. I feel like I’m the only one researching this and no one is talking about it.
I use the terra cotta spikes for our outdoor plants and they’re great. I have two self-watering pots and I like them, although I don’t find watering the rest of my plants the normal way to be a burden. I bottom water all my plants, even my very large peace lily and frilly fern. I have two moisture meters and they’ve been a game-changer for me. Best plant tool ever.
Great video! I would never water over a sink without having a dishpan or something to catch the water. It saves precious possibly fertilised water and stops bits from washing out of the pots into the drain
Always look forward to your videos ! It would be neat to do a community experiment- like co plant a pothos and philodendron together, or mass propagating succulents
I noticed that a lot of my water mix would just run down the drain, so I started putting a bin underneath it so I could then pour back into my container and continue using the water &/ or have some plants bottom water in it. Also, I have a fine mesh sink strainer just in case perlite, etc. spill out which does happens a lot 🫠
Does this present any issues with spreading disease amongst the plants? I guess if you don't have any diseased plants, you'll be fine. But I would be leery of sharing water. Kind of like kids sharing milk in the cafeteria at school. Maybe I'm just paranoid!
@@tommaxwell429 I'm the same. I might reuse the water left in the dish for the same plant if it looks like it could go for seconds. But using the 'splash back' water for the next plant seems risky for my plants as they have sentimental value - if I inadvertently spread a bug or disease I would be heartbroken. So I prefer to throw that water out. That's the cost of doing business. 😂
Mr Sheffield.... you really should get yourself a water butt! It will save all that water conditioning and having to buy distilled water for the carnivores :D I bought a large cheap black bin from Amazon cut a hole in it's lid and then adjusted/cut the downpipe from my conservatory guttering to feed through the lid. It's always full and my plants absolutely love it! Haven't used tap water for over 2 years.
I actually take my plants to a large 3 inch deep pot and water them for 35 minutes. And the pots are much heavier when I first started and now that I have the moisture meter I check the soil . My plants seem to love it !
I'm quite sure I mentioned that I mist both my fern/spider plants. The misting saved both of them. The fern especially because it was littering my carpet around the clock. I mist them once in the morning and that's it. The spider plant stopped yellowing immediately and although growing slower than expected, it's producing new growth which is good to see. I side with misting sparingly and thoroughly water distilled.
I bought the sansi grow lights bc of you (and bc they are having a sale), and i LOVE them so much more than another brand other youtubers recommended! My light meter reads them as giving enough light! Thank you so much Mr. Sheffield!
Because of fungus gnats, I started bottom watering. So instead of walking around with a watering can, I now pick three or four plants every day, and I don’t even need to stick my finger in or use my moisture meter… I just press down on the soil, and if it’s hard and doesn’t spring back, it means it’s probably wet down the bottom. But if it is springy and has a bit of give in it then it’s probably dry and needs a drink. So I take each and every one of my plants to the sink these days instead of using a watering can and I fill up the sink and let them sit in there for an hour before returning them to their spot. they all seem very happy and I have amazing growth with everything at the moment so I’m doing something right! As for the fungus gnats… I have tried bottom watering, mosquito bits, neem oil, cinnamon, and clear plastic gnat catchers… and I’m thinking that the cinnamon seems to be working the best. However it might be just a cycle… They may all just be dormant at the moment and come back and annoy the crap out of me in a few more weeks.
i just starting bottom water to. i put my finger to check the soil.sometimes the pot is very light so i gif water and use my finger also.my meter broke down very quick.thanks for the info how do you use the cinnamon for the snats
I was drastically under watering my agave. The leaves were constantly curling. I move it inside so I can keep a better eye on it. It’s now much happier being fully hydrated when needed.
Hi Rich, great video. One tip for watering that works for me besides the water meter I count1,2,3,4,5,6 then I know the plant is getting enough. Also I let my orchids sit in water for about 15 minutes to let bark time to absorb the amount of water they need. I did get a humidifier to help those I together who need humity. Love all your videos as you know. Thanks for your help with our questions. Your answers really, really work. Thank you. Love Billie
I have a tip for you! When taking cacti out of their decorative pots, take a tea towel, forl it, wrap around the plant with enough force to hold onto it and pull up. Should come out fairly easy! Also a good way to make sure you do not get stabbed when repotting spiky friends.. Two videos in a row with your money tree front and center for a moment....Have I mentioned how much I love your tree? I would love to see how you have gotten it to be so even and large. Thank you so much for sharing another amazing tip filled video! Have a great one.
@@SheffieldMadePlants Did I wear you down? hahahahaha I just picked up a new one this week, so I am very much looking forward to this video!! Well, I look forward to all your videos.
You can always plug the sink you are watering over and scoop that runoff water into your watering can again and again so that you use up most of it. You only have to tip off the watering can when you’ve used so much water from the sink that you don’t have enough for runoff of other plants. You can also use a bowl if you have one big enough. I have a few bowls that are about 15” across that I love to use for this purpose specifically. The bowl allows me to pick it up and pour the runoff water back into my watering can.
For plants that hate becoming dry - even once - like Boston Ferns, I have found the smaller terracotta spikes with integral transparent water reservoirs invaluable. I quickly realised that I hadn’t appreciated how thirsty they get when the relative humidity of the air is low, rather than being made thirsty by the heat per sa. This now obvious to me phenomena, had caused me to miss judge how often to check them. Now, I just need to glance at the reservoir and that also provides me with a large margin of safety. For these type of plants that always like moist soil, they appear to do very much better with this watering regime with no brown crispy bits but lots of lush strong foliage. For your carnivores, have you thought about a rain gutter down pipe diverter and barrel? You can then use rain water for all your plants. Alas, buying de-ionised water is cheaper than distilling water yourself. Just worked it out that at 25.5p per kWh it would cost about 18 ½ p per litre just in electricity.
Now , maybe I can be a better plant mom to my cacti 🤔 This video has helped me in many ways ! I am sure I have some questions but I will watch your video again. Thankyou thankyou👍
Its interesting how there are so many ways of watering plants that work 😊 I like to take my plants out of the cover pot, put the nursery pot in a bowl, top water until it comes out at the bottom, leave to soak for 20-30 minutes and then put the plants back.
I love your begonias. The leaves are beautiful. And the tree outside your window with the red leaves is gorgeous. It's definitely autumn. Thanks for this video. Helpful information as always. Aroids! I have a philodendron and a pothos. I didn't know that they don't like wet feet. TTFN.
Good Morning Mr Sheffield!!! Another great video on watering and feeding a variety of plants. I enjoyed your drip drip method for moss poles but I got rid of all moss poles and use cedar planks. Hope you have a great week and cant wait to see your next video!!
I love to watch your show. I never get bored , I just started collecting plants maybe four weeks and kept buying. So have too much and I am drowning.😮💨
Great video! I bought a Cool Beauty Dieffenbachia Color and noticed a sticker on it touting its automatic watering system. When I looked it up it is just a wicking system, basically a string hanging out of the bottom of the pot that runs up into the pot. It acts like a wick to draw the water up into the pot. I guess it works but I see it as bit of nothing. Anyway, I like the drown and drain method and seem to have pretty good luck with it. I have an old recycle bin that I have converted into a rain collection system so I have rain water unless it goes dry. I have a patio that I can take my plants out to and just drown them and let them sit for 20-30 mins until they stop dripping. Repeat when the ole meter says dry. Thanks for pointing out the differences between watering strategies for the different species. I think we tend to treat them all the same which can lead to overwatering the succulents. I've been looking for the House Plant Focus here in the states without much luck. I don't see it on Amazon here. How about a video on your favorite plant stands/ladders. I don't have a lot of window sill space so I need some stands I can place inside the room a ways
I've often worried that 'drown and drain' washes nourishment out of the soil. Which should be replenished by adding nourishment to the water in the sink or bucket. Good tip!
You can place an absorbent towel, tissues, or old newspapers under the pot to help soak up the excess water. Replace them with fresh ones as they become wet until the pot is dry
A good tip for moss poles is putting a plastic cup (with holes in the bottom) at the top of the moss pole, then you can fill them all up in rounds and let it soak through gradually and it is a lot less work :)))
I mostly water from the top but I do bottom water some things that are pretty root bound. I stopped misting so much over the years. It can cause a lot of problems if your not careful. It doesn't do too much for humidity anyways unless your spraying constantly.
Interesting about uneven watering. Just this morning, I stuck a moisture meter into pot out on my patio, and it read “dry.” Then I checked a few inches away, and it read quite moist! I’d always thought that couldn’t happen because the moisture level evens itself out, but obviously I was wrong.
I put my plants in a bucket and soak them and let them sit in a couple inches of water for about 20-30 min and you can see how much they absorb, then I drain the water and put them away. For my plants that I can’t move because they are attached to the wall I water them in their decorative pot and discard the water after 20-30 min
I have an Opuntia with long, thin paddles, and for the past two years she's been my "water monitor" for all the cacti and succulents. When her uppermost paddles start to shrivel, I know it's almost time to water the cacti; I actually do it when her paddles start to bend over (immersing everybody in a shallow bin until they're completely soaked). Once she's been watered, her paddles stand back up and fill back out within 48 hours, and the cycle starts again. And I haven't lost a single cactus or succulent to over/underwatering since I started relying on her.
Water from bottom. Sit for 5mins for small to medium. And 10mins for huge pots. Leave to drip excess in sink. Done. Less chance of fungus gnats and rot
Hello I'm new to your channel and I love it here 😊 Are there any videos about propagating bamboo plants?? I have one that's sentimental from my mum and I don't want to kill it
Can’t get the soil mix here in USA, hopefully they will soon. I do use potting soil and add a big bag of pearlite. I use organic seaweed fertilizer that stinks up the whole house but that’s life. I sit the plant in a bucket for at least 1/2 hr then water from the top. Now it’s fall here in Florida so I will not be watering that much and using moisture meter. I also have carnivores they are looking great except the Venus flytrap that has gone dormant since August, may put in the refrigerator till spring not cold enough here in south Florida.
Seeking advice: 1. My pagoda cactus was outside on a south table for a week. A squirrel knocked it over repeatedly. Now she's turning yellow and getting a little hard. Any recommendations, folks? 2. Brought my hahni snake to the shop I bought it from for advice because the tips of some of the spears were softening. They told me I was under watering so I watered her and now more leaves are soft. Thoughts?
Terra Cotta pots is best for succulents and cacti in my experience. I have some of the same succulents in plastic pots and terra Cotta. The terra Cotta succulents are doing much better compared to ones in plastic
Quick question.. if i water the soil from above & let the inner pot sit in the water that ran through to the decorative pot for like half an hour / hour Doesnt that do the same as your bottom watering? Maybe even quicker?
Hi, I have a question - My pots have very tiny drainage holes and most of my plants are small ones in big pots. I place them near the window (except for snake plant, pinstripe calathea & pothos). Should I still water them until the water starts pouring out from the bottom? I've noticed the soil doesn't dry out easily coz they receive light but not much heat & I don't want the roots to rot. Currently, I'm giving them around 0.5 - 1 glass of water every 4-5 days, based on the soil check. Pls advise
@@SheffieldMadePlants Aha, thanks a lot for the quick response. I'll try to make them bigger. And of course, your videos are super helpful for new plant moms like me 😊.
@SheffieldMadePlants I have some fungus gnats of course lol..but there's something else that looks like a brownish ball? Thought spider mites but these look different ..any ideas 💡
That's what i always repeat to the people: succulent plants want water like other plants but, if they don't have it for a period of time, they have the possibility to resist in this condition. So give water like other plants and they will thank you with a lots of spiny balls or similar stuff (they express their love with more spikes so you can feel it in every way 😅)
Im just going to ask this here since i have nowhere else to ask: On my prayer plant i have very tiny white bugs which you can barely see with the naked eye (a lot smaller then mealybugs). Are these pests? And how do i get rid of them.
I couldn’t comment on the short you did regarding pH imbalance so I’m commenting regarding pH imbalance here. I hope you respond. I think my problem with my kalancloe is PH imbalance but I don’t know how to correct it. I tried a rapid test device and unfortunately it didn’t help. I tried test strips and they didn’t help. I have my kalancloe in loose soil, and I have tried watering less and also watering more. According to what I have read, it is in the correct location as far as temperature and sunlight. I have fertilized it with a recommended fertilizer. But the leaves continue to turn yellow and eventually die. Can you either help or point me in the direction of help?
I've been a bad plant parent. minimal attention to my houseplants... my garden is taking up all my time. but I'll beg for forgiveness gardening almost done..
I get so much confused of watering the plant different ways, like pouring water under the extra pot. Maybe because I lost 4 in 3 weeks while learning. I felt very sad too cause it was my fault.😒
It’s akin to desert weather patterns. Some deserts go weeks without water and then it all dumps down at once! The soil is completely saturated, but then the water drains away quick
The right pot size and any good cactus/succulent soil mix will ensure the water leaves at the right pace! You’ve got decades of horticultural knowledge on the internet now to take advantage of!
It works great, though. I immerse all of my cacti and euphorbias in a shallow storage bin of water every 4-6 weeks. I let them sit for about 20-30 minutes before pulling them out, letting them drain, and putting them back in their cachepots. I used to kill cacti due to either overwatering or underwatering, but haven't lost a single one since I started immersing them a couple of years ago. I buy cheap cacti at Ikea and big-box DIY stores, and they're all thriving.
can somebody help me? My Pinguicula is getting holes on the leaves, leaves are not as sticky as they were before and the leaves wilt very fast - what could be wrong with it? I only watered with destilled water 😢 it's on my kitchen counter beside the fruit basket and is supposed to catch all the nasty flying things but it doesn't anymore (it gets only morning direct sun) Help, please 🤣
Some of these meter readers are hit and miss. I returned one as did not work at all. Despite watering thoroughly it kept reading dry. I have one at the moment sometimes it reads dry after I have watered the plant and other plants it reads correctly. Difficult one really.
Same thing with me. I bought one but it would read dry all the time even if I just watered the plant earlier in the day. I just use bamboo/ wood skewers to check but also have an Excel spreadsheet of all my plants with notes and keep track of the last 2 waterings per plant. From there I know which plants I don't have to check to water for at least 2 weeks, 3 1/2 weeks, etc. This helps me try not to over water which I have a problem with 😅
Yes like me I make a note on an app called calendar notes when I water my plants as having so many I cannot remember which one was watered and which I had fertilised. @@chleda15

hi Rich, quick question. if a pot has too much water and the weather is bad so it'll take time for the plant to absorb it, what can we do? repot?
You can place an absorbent towel, tissues, or old newspapers under the pot to help soak up the excess water. Replace them with fresh ones as they become wet until the pot is dry
Stick a tampon in the soil. Tried and tested success
Fix the issue by repotting into lighter potting mix

For my plants that I can’t move because they are attached to the wall I water them in their decorative pot and discard the water after 20-30 min
You can also poke your cacti. They become softer, when they need water. (Dont't get poked back though)
I live n Florida. Humidity is the least of my problems 😮
I hope you are ok, after Hurricane Helene passed through Florida yesterday.
I got a moisture meter for my pot plants.
Water from bottom. Sit for 5mins for small to medium. And 10mins for huge pots. Leave to drip excess in sink. Done. Less chance of fungus gnats and rot
Yup, I agree, got rid of them in 4 months 💪🏼
Love learning through your videos, but I miss some of your humor, hope all is well.Hi from Maine😊
Hey Richard, do you find the carnivorous plants help you with fungus gnat problem?
They catch some but I’ve got a lot of plants
Hello I'm new to your channel and I love it here 😊 Are there any videos about propagating bamboo plants?? I have one that's sentimental from my mum and I don't want to kill it
No sorry not on that
Can’t get the soil mix here in USA, hopefully they will soon.
Misting is pointless, it increases the humidity by a negligible amount for a maximum of 7 minutes.
But drenching the foliage with a good foliar fertilizer both feeds and cleans the leaves .
@@johna8973 true but you risk fluoride burn on some plants with UK water
Seeking advice:
Thoughts?
What do you do with the left over water assuming it also has fertilizer added?
How do you spray off your plants without getting soil everywhere
You had to say wrinkly toes!
Maybe you could make a video on carnivorous plants in the future. Good show.👌
Hey! What's the beautiful plant sitting in your kitchen window sill??
Tradescantia tricolor?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Thanks! I keep seeing people call it a Wedding spider plant and I had never heard it called That before 🤔
Terra Cotta pots is best for succulents and cacti in my experience. I have some of the same succulents in plastic pots and terra Cotta. The terra Cotta succulents are doing much better compared to ones in plastic
Where did you buy the white grow light next to the sansevieria ?

hey can i ask i found Oxalis (creeping) weed in my pot it looks very nice can it be planted in those wide shallow takeaway containers? it's very tiny
If there's not too much soil maybe
Bottom water & water stay in the bottom pot; how long before draining out the water so no root rot?
The next day for me
Quick question.. if i water the soil from above & let the inner pot sit in the water that ran through to the decorative pot for like half an hour / hour
Doesnt that do the same as your bottom watering? Maybe even quicker?
Yeah that should work
Hi, I have a question - My pots have very tiny drainage holes and most of my plants are small ones in big pots.
Pls advise
Can you make the holes bigger? I recommend watering until the soil is fully wet
@@SheffieldMadePlants Aha, thanks a lot for the quick response. I'll try to make them bigger.
And of course, your videos are super helpful for new plant moms like me 😊.
Hi would you have any ideas on why spider plants would become sticky??
Have you checked for bugs?
@SheffieldMadePlants I have some fungus gnats of course lol..but there's something else that looks like a brownish ball? Thought spider mites but these look different ..any ideas 💡
@@pamwright8372 hard to say without seeing
That's what i always repeat to the people: succulent plants want water like other plants but, if they don't have it for a period of time, they have the possibility to resist in this condition. So give water like other plants and they will thank you with a lots of spiny balls or similar stuff (they express their love with more spikes so you can feel it in every way 😅)
Im just going to ask this here since i have nowhere else to ask:
On my prayer plant i have very tiny white bugs which you can barely see with the naked eye (a lot smaller then mealybugs). Are these pests? And how do i get rid of them.
Do they hop?
I'd use neem as prevention as a spray and a flush as well 🙏🏼
can I use water conditioner and still use tap water on a carnivorous plant? I also have a really good water filter
No i don’t think so
@@SheffieldMadePlants rats :(
I couldn’t comment on the short you did regarding pH imbalance so I’m commenting regarding pH imbalance here. Can you either help or point me in the direction of help?

can someone tell me what the plant at 4:34 is called, it looks interesting
Ripple Jade
I tried misting once. I got those white bugs.
I've been a bad plant parent. minimal attention to my houseplants... my garden is taking up all my time. but I'll beg for forgiveness gardening almost done..
If you lie the moss pole down it is easy to water.
I get so much confused of watering the plant different ways, like pouring water under the extra pot. Maybe because I lost 4 in 3 weeks while learning. I felt very sad too cause it was my fault.😒
what's the pretty plant at 4:31?? omg :0
Ripple Jade
My curly jade plant keeps on losing its leaves . I do water once every week.
Sounds like too much maybe
👍🏻
Have you noticed if any of your plants prefer room temperature water vs. cold tap water?
Seem fine straight out of the tap
Submerging a succulent feels soooo wrong. Utter nightmare fuel
It’s akin to desert weather patterns. Some deserts go weeks without water and then it all dumps down at once! The soil is completely saturated, but then the water drains away quick
But my living room doesn’t quite reach the same daily temperature spikes to get rid of the water. I worry it will get over watered 🥲
@@chleda15
@@chleda15 yes I use an app to make notes when I have watered my plants otherwise it is difficult to remember which ones I have watered.
But Mr Sheffield I thought you said misting our plants is an old wives tale and not necessary ? 🤔
Yes and I did here
Why not just use the terracotta as cover pots?
Most will have drainage holes

More trouble than looking after a new born baby. Ridiculous.
I'd rather water plants than take care of a newborn any day
@@Nenezilla same, and I've had 3 of them!
You obviously don’t get us, so nevermind.
Have 5 kids watering plants by far the easiest compared to a newborn. Even the pickiest of plants
Its interesting how there are so many ways of watering plants that work 😊
I like to take my plants out of the cover pot, put the nursery pot in a bowl, top water until it comes out at the bottom, leave to soak for 20-30 minutes and then put the plants back.
