Dwarka has also been referred to throughout its history as “Mokshapuri”, “Dwarkamati”, and “Dwarkavati”. It is mentioned in the ancient prehistoric epic period of the Mahabharata. According to legend, Krishna settled here after he defeated and killed his uncle Kansa at Mathura.

Legend
According to legend, Krishna built Dwarka after defeating his uncle Kansa in Mathura. Krishna is said to have reclaimed the land from the sea and renamed it Dwaravati or Dwarka. The city was built with the help of divine architects and was known as the Golden City.
Submergence
It is believed that the city was submerged around 3138 BC after Krishna left for the afterlife.
Archaeological discovery
The city was revived with the help of archaeological founders.
Devbhumi Dwarka District
The Devbhumi Dwarka District was created in 2013 from the Jamnagar district. The district is named after the famous Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka.

Dwarka is a holy city and an important pilgrimage site for followers of Krishna.
Mahabharata
The city is mentioned in the ancient epic, the Mahabharata. In the epic, the king of Saubha attacked Dwarka while Krishna was away for the Pandavas Rajasuya.
