I follow loads of the historic Glasgow site, knocking down the Old Gorbals, driving the M8 through the city and demolishing St Enoch Train station ripped the heart out the city IMHO.... Your bang on the button mate, this latest development of the Gorbals is fantastic. When you think about it, it should always have been one of the most desirable areas in the city due to the proximity to the toon centre

Great video Paul, It's quite an emotional wee journey seeing the Gorbals now compared to what used to be there up to the 60s and 70s. There are many many ghosts that walk these streets from an era long gone. You passed Clelland St where that iconic photo of the 2 wee boys was taken in the 40s after the war. That picture captures the old Gorbals perfectly and shows the squalor and how really poor the area was back then. Having said that ! there was a strong sense of community and the children were always looked after as best as possible. Hard times indeed.

Thankyou Derek for your comment,, id would have loved to see the gorbals back in those days

@@ROUTEPLANNERPAUL Indeed Paul, a very very different landscape and something you would never forget. But ! the people were a breed unto themselves and many many great people came from those surroundings IF you had the determination. Sadly too many succumbed to the deprivation and had very short lives. It's a chapter in our history that you can look back on with both shame AND pride regarding the outcome for many of the people. A Glasgow that disappeared into memory or history a long time ago.

Thanks for this. My grandparents lived in the old tenements and I remember visiting when I was a child. I remember the old back courts. Croon Street, Ballater Street and Cumberland Street. I remember my mum talking about these streets. I think there was a gang called The Cumbie in the late 1950’s (from Cumberland Street). The Gorbals is totally unrecognisable and still has a feeling of old. Thanks again 🦋

Lovely video, the gorbals is beautiful, but I've just done the whole video using my 1970s eyes, seeing all the tenements and shops in my minds eye and wishing i could go back those days, i understand things move on for the better but the old gorbals will be forever in my heart❤

I came from Florence Street in the Gorbals in Glasgow in the Sixties and seventies then we moved to Hutcheston Town Court until I got Married then I managed to get a house in Norfolk Court and stayed there for 9yrs and then bought a house in Crookston and I'm still here 😊 but I'll always be a Gorbals Guy. 😎🇬🇧👍

Impressed paul no litter, did the council know you were doing a wee drive? Like when queen lizzie opened up blindcraft in springburn just off petershill road, planted trees from springburn road all the way down petershill road over the railway hump, trees stopped just before the turn to the blindcraft building on the left, next day trees removed,.eye opener for me.

I used to work in a wee screen printer's workshop in South Portland Street. The building is still there but I don't know what it's used for now. I see the old Gorbals library has gone though.

This may seem a strange thing to say but I miss the old tenements. I wish they had renovated instead of demolishing. They had two goes at it before getting it as it is now. I think the original Gorbals had a lot of community spirit. I don’t know the new Gorbals but it is nice to see the better housing. Lived there in Thistle Street until we were moved out 71 one of the last tenements to come down. Happy days.

My mother was born in Salisbury Street, 1912
We lived in Cleland Street in the 50s.
I understand things have to move on and hopefully progress. But being originally from the 50s Gorbals, all im seeing are houses and houses but characterless and nothing else, no shops, cinemas, etc.

@@ROUTEPLANNERPAUL the Gorbals, was a rough auld place(still is), infact the whole of Glasgow was wild, but it was mostly drink in the early years, now its smack, wee Benny Lynch will always be remembered as a fantastic boxer, but in the end a very tragic case, he has his statue and Glasgow will never forget him, some tough people came out if the Gorbals and I don't think any of them were as tough as Benny, he used his fists, while other (so called), hard men used the razor....
