You should be aware of the fact that harmonies can be reproduced from the main vocal, so without actually singing them. So the producer is the hero, not the singer

Exactly! I love setting my compressors to the fastest attack time and the threshold as close to 0db as possible. That way my tracks all sound like the life is squeezed out of them. Well, actually the recording is pretty good. Good mic, good pre, and awesome vocalist. Probably with some eq and compression on the way in. That makes the 80% of the sound. This will not happen in a home studio scenario.

YES. I've recorded some AMAZING vocals with a C800 going into a 1073 into an 1176 in a treated studio with a single EQ plugin and it sounded SPECTACULAR. Opposed to me engineering in a bedroom with a SM7B into an Apogee pre into a non treated room with literally 6 plugins trying to compensate for the lack of environment/gear. It's really what divides the pros from the amateurs!

Vocals is the most difficult for me. I’ve gotten mixing music/tracks down to a pretty good science but I’m always looking to improve. You’re studio looks amazing. I couldn’t figure out what your board was. I was thinking it was either a NEVE 88RS or a SSL. It must be fun playing with all that great analog gear (in real life). LOL. I have most of your rack in the UAD plug-in form. Great video and mixing. I’ll check out your website.

There's at least 4 harmonies at around 2:16, I just transcribed it. Yes, one of them is an octave, but it's a nice arrangement. There's even a major 7th at 1:45. There's a 9th at 2:12 and the voicing includes a root, a 2nd and a 3rd all crammed together and it works really nice.
Actually, I think it's pretty slick arrangement.

Justin comes from a vocal pop group who did nothing but harmony and background vocals throghout their music and in their live/acapella and album settings so, of course he did those background vocals. The producer pressed a button or something and made all the harmonies come in or whatever he did. The studio can’t just create ideas😕 it’s all up to the artist to lay down the material/vocals.

Only difference is the minute distortion added from the extra D/A->A/D conversion. So tbh mixing on analogue gear is scientifically worse and will add more distortion (with extremely expensive gear obviously you’ll hardly notice anything). The idea that analogue is inherently better just isn’t true. One day the entire world will be itb, the same reason nobody uses tape anymore, or vinyl. Just progression.

Lord D-Rock Vinyl sales were actually higher than Downloads last year lol. Just for the record. Vinyl has had a huge revival these past years.

The back vocals kick in at 1:44. That's the extra wideness you instantly get when it comes with the right harmonies.

(I'm assuming since I think this is an SSL 9000J console and I only know the SSL 4000+) So at 1:44 when he pushes the "In" button that turns green
The "Fx" knobs below it are the reverbs, delays, doublers etc. and once he pushes the "In" button he's either bypassing it or including it in the mix.
When he activated the inserts it sounded lesser so I'm assuming the sound is already printed onto the project and he's just A/B'ing what he did to what was already on there. I could be wrong though! Knowing these things hopefully someone who works on SSL's can give me more insight! I'm more of an API guy lol
