@@georgf9279 we had some kid who was a colonel's son in the af and he called his dad to snitch on our CIVILIAN instructor at our job training, in which the instructor told the COLONEL what was really happening. That boy was a good boy ever since
I was in the military about a year ago. One time we had some people from the kings guard stay in our barracks. They made their beds too well for our standards, so we had to make their beds less perfect so that their standards would not become our new standard in the company.
I had my recruit period with the Kings Guard, but I wanted to be a guard so we were transferred and got mixed with MP recruits and some from the Air Force. Me and the others from the Kings Guard were using our debit cards to get rid of wrinkles and creases, but the MP and Air Force recruits just stuffed the excess sheet into the sides and that was good enough.
I felt so cheated.
I glad I experienced some cool exercises and learned some skills instead of just getting really good at SLO(the drills they perform).

i was in the kings guard, it was strict but the drill troop is a lot stricter.
The level of English of everyone in Norway is absolutely incredible
Pretty incredible when we compare it to the amount of bilingual people at home (TX, USA for me). Lol

@@winterkeptuswarm Yes and no really. So, the biggest thing about TX is how many Hispanic people live here. So, that means that if they were born in like Mexico then they are like 95% likely that they speak Spanish and 65% English. (This is coming from my home town at least).
But, the big kicker is that when you are born here (any race) you take Spanish as a kid but no one uses it so we all loose it. It's really only the Hispanic households that use the language enough to keep it. My ex gf was Hispanic and she didn't speak Spanish even though her whole family did.
It's just so impressive to me to see people in other countries be able to retain multiple languages. Maybe it's like an incentive or just part if the culture? But, for me and I guess "us" it's not really important. I've kinda always thought that it's really just because we are already using the most or one of the most popular languages in the world and on top of that if you are traveling here you most likely can speak english...so none of us care enough to keep another language past taking our classes in school.
In generelt all Scandinavian countries are pretty good at speaking and writing English and I think they are all in the top 5 of best non native English speaking countries

@@gunnar5489 Yes and no, I just think there's a bigger difference between kids in of the new gen. Our sport talents and "oppegående" (cognizant/fit/etc) teens are as present as ever, if not more. There's just more extremes I think both ways...

Magnus did amazing. Honestly, there’s always a moment in Drill and Ceremony where the person has reached mental saturation after they have begun to get better at simple things. They stop actively thinking about those simple things and mistakes happen. The muscle memory isn’t there yet, but the mental memorization almost is. That usually takes longer than just a couple hours. You can see this moment in Magnus’s face when he knows he shouldn’t have made a simple mistake. But, then there is always a period of growth directly after that where those simple movements become reinforced and more complex movements become possible for memorization. All in all, excellent job.
This can be applied to people first learning how to climb as well. Those simple fundamentals of climbing need to be remembered and reinforced before moving on to more complex movements. This concept explains why you see “peaks and valleys” in your training ability. Your brain literally needs time to process what it has learned (usually during sleep).
For people complaining about the lack of climbing content: Keep in mind that we're in the middle of a pandemic, and that gyms are closed in the region around Oslo (where Magnus is at). I'm sure he'll do more outdoor climbing once it gets slightly warmer.
I for one think Magnus and his team are natural at making these almost... documentary type videos. I've been enjoying them a lot.
He can get in to gyms as he's technically working when filming 🤷🏻♂️

@@andulasis6283 As an officer it's the third rank I believe. But the only captains we had were the company commander, and that guy was the highest ranking guy we were ever in contact with as privates. So compared to everyone else in that hall, he probably outranks all of them

@@KazuDiabolis It takes discipline coordination and skills to perform these acts and is very popular amongst the norwegian people to watch. The kings guard is one of the branches in the army with the highest standards when it comes to discipline. Show respect.

Oh dear, how this brings back memories from 2016-2017. It looks awfully strict, and that's because it is.. However, it's something you grow to love over the one year in that company:
- Strategies to get rid of wrinkles and stay wrinkle free.
- Folding a nice wardrobe.
- Way too much to do in a short amount of time. Most days eating was a rush, and you learned to eat a full dinner in just a few minutes to get back to business (Also, from the point you start to perform for an audience, it can and will be extremely tight schedules.)
- Late nights practicing outside in temperatures below 0 degrees C.
- The hardened bump you got on your hip-bone from smacking the M1 with force against it during training and pain-tests between us for fun. Some got bruises that looked like galaxies around that area.
- The sound of marching and the M1 Garand became quite arousing when it was JUST right. The more everyone put into it, the better it sounds, and it felt powerful. The sound of a good "holdt" (stop) was intense.
- The overly strict inspections. (Sgt. Gresseth always found a new spot with some traces of dust with every inspection, it's frightening what that man would do to make sure he found something. In a good way, hahah.)
- And of course: the maintaining of the spit shine that took 20m-1h every night. And the movies and improving of the spit shine during weekends. (If you made a mistake or were a bit careless, you'd have to fix it asap and it would ruin your sleep. You use them even while you train, so it's common to smack the Garand a bit too close to your shoe, as in on your toes.)
Really been looking forward for some more exposure of that company. I love these bits on TH-cam, but it's a lack of them sadly. It's not really just something you do, it becomes a lifestyle you grow to enjoy and love.

@@wenbinxu1951 It's the standard boots of our army, called M77 and it is utter shit 😅 I remember I had a pair for a while and suddenly the bottom would just crumble up in the middle of an exercise. The Drill and Music platoon have to spit shine them tho to the point where you can see your own reflection on them.

Just to correct a bit. The man without the gun probably had some minor injures to his hand or wrist caused by the heavy 5-6kg weapon they use. I was in this platoon last year and experienced that myself
Ikr it is probably so hard to do all the right movements without the actual weapon in hand. Looked pretty impressive.

@@TheAtl0001 Strong, well-integrated men recognize other strong men and there is a natural brotherhood. Military (especially special units) do a good job weeding out weak, weasely men.

Yet it is also encouraging, enhancing the greatness that most men do have in them (given for some deeply hidden) and transforming, become a better version of yourself. This not only applies to a military setting but life in general.
@@TheAtl0001 It absolutely is a question of weeding out those who are not capable and willing... The whole military enrollment process is designed to do that... what are you talking about.
@@DeuPKayMy statements apply to life in general (Magnus is not military). FYI I am an ex-commando (Reserve-LT) and I can tell you I have seen quite some transformations. Of course, you start with minimum requirements but basically most can meet those standards. Moreover, you start with the premise of inclusiveness and not exclusiveness. Not everybody is equal (though everybody's WORTH is equal!!) and the most important part, the REAL differentiator is character, mental toughness, fortitude, self-discipline and being a team-player. Given a few exceptions, these qualities can be instilled in people, especially when they are young and still moldable. Selection process is not a purview of the military, it is in all parts of life, and you can train and prepare for it, ie. Change for the better. People are not static, people CAN change.
Great job Magnus. Having been a member learning drill, then teaching it, then overseeing the teaching of it throughout my career I can say that if all of our candidates picked it up as fast as you we would be lucky!
So, honest question here: is this only a matter of ceremony, or do these guys actually have a military role as well?
It takes a lot of courage to jump in with such a professional organization and do your best when you know you are not meeting expectations. I am quite impressed in your behavior through this experience, Magnus.
No kidding! These guys are in their unit for just a year, usually. And they are frequently the biggest hit in the drill tattoo gatherings. Mad respect to the guys in the HMKG drill platoon. Magnus probably wouldn't pass :P but i think he did good!
As a gymnast and a former soilder in the drill platoon, I must really say I've been enjoying your videos lately. I must have spent more than a thousand hours going back and forth in that hangar, and I can literally smell this video. Giving me a nostalgia trip like nothing else. I think you did great! Keep up the epic videos!

Magnus, you really put yourself out there. To be in a hall with so many professionals and not being overwhelmed is as impressive as your pull-up records!
The best part is that none of them are proffesional, all of them except officers are changeed out at ish 9 month intervalls :) edit: to clarify, they are all in "førstegangstjeneste", the mandatory 1 year military service.
Love Norway! Not only your military, but your entire country oozes professionality, decency, responsibility, intelligence, calmness, strength, trustworthiness and wit. I live in The Netherlands and I see you as our slightly calmer, more calculated brothers. Much love from NL!

His Majesty the King's Guard is pretty much the gold standard of the Norwegian Armed Forces when it comes to discipline and respect to the service. I am in Norway's UDT unit, and we're not nearly as disciplined as these guys. There is a reason why they rank top 3 in every Edinburgh military tattoo... I am in awe of these guys

one thing we hate here is people acting like they are superior to you. most people will speak to you as your peer, so even in the military you can usually have friendly chats across vast gaps in ranks just due to everyone wanting to keep each other comfortable and friendly. obviously when its business time orders go out in one direction, but when it's chilling time we're all just norwegians.
It's a trait they all seem to have, Sweden is the same.

LOVING this series, Magnus. It's like a very personalized documentary. Well-produced, good music, good quality all around. It is easy to see the effort you put into the whole thing. Thank you - it's paying off! Your humor and humility also makes a nice contrast to the strictness of the military. It is also so interesting to see these drills! I would love an entire series where you just visit and try out loads of different physical careers or sports. It's really educational and fun!
Have been in the Navy for 10 years, thank you for these videos Magnus has brought back so much nostalgia from my early days as a trainee back at the academy! I haven't done serious drill like these guys in years, but I know how hard it is!

I was in 4th Company, Platoon 2 in 2018. This guy came to train us before our "SLO"-exam, and my god was he strict. Seems he went easy on you haha.

Served in 2013 for HMKG, Gresseth was the strictest sergeant we had. He was incredibly strict with the drill.

They train for that. Sometimes during shows it happens that one of them drops their gun. Then they will just go on as if nothing has happened and believe it or not most of the audience won't even notice he dropped it.

I'm a US marine, so while the details of the Norwegian drill are different, the overall efficiency much the same. It's great to see allies guard companies drill just as hard as we do. We'll done Norway!
As someone from the U.S. Navy, I understand what he is going through. If he wasn't there, and someone was messing up that bad, they would get worked! That being said, the recruits have a lot more time than he does and I was terrible at first. Loved seeing you go through something that takes a different discipline. Thanks Magnus!

As a dancer I must say that I am truly impressed with the coordination and the control in movements of thees guys. It's hard work getting it to perfection! Good work for the brain aswell as the body 👌🙌
As a former circus artist that's what I thought too.
What you experienced is what recruits go through for their first few weeks in almost all basic training for militaries around the world (learning commands, how to march and perform in cadence, establishing proprioception while performing). Watching people attempt to fix their squaregating (stepping off on the wrong foot, with the wrong arm being swung forward, making an unnatural step) is always funny, but something we all experience :).
And the unit you are with, they are employed (role wise) to be perfectionists at this, so naturally you are seeing people at their best with the basics/intermediates perfected. Its awesome watching this content because it brings back memories for me and I know the experience would have been interesting for those outside of the forces.
Hope you enjoyed it, as much as I enjoyed watching it :).
Now Magnus knows what new climbers feel like watching him climb!

Saw these boys at the Edinburgh tattoo they are simply amazing and very smart in their HM Kings Guard uniforms. They are a great credit to Norwegian youth and represent the very best of the Norwegian military.

@@ctogive I think it's mostly just about the old traditions. A few hundred years ago, giving your life to protect the one of the King would mean great honor. But idk, I haven't really interacted with the military although they have my greatest respect for serving their country.
And yes, garbage truck drivers are severely underpaid for their work
@@ctogive they serve no defensive purpose, they serve a purpose to show of the armed forces as a professional and prestigious force. But yes, the things they do here do not give them anything in terms of competence in combat and actually defending the country.

@@fynnla.e literally no, the most able fighters in the military have very little dicipline, they don't care if they behave correctly or if their room is tidy and neat, what matters is how good you are in the field, how good you are with your firearm and how well you can work with others in such situations.

I had one year of military service, and i remember how hard it was to coordinate every movement with 100 men, just seeing these guys sincronism is so satisfying 😂 They are pros!
They're actually recruits and have less than a years training. Which makes it even more impressive.

This really takes me back to my High School days in JROTC doing drill competitions. I live in the USA so it’s very interesting to see the minor difference in the movements but overall it’s very similar. It’s been 35 years but I can still remember every movement.
Even worse ... or better? ... I think I could still feld strip and clean an M-1, some 60 years later. Plus I learned to read and work with maps, so not bad for JROTC at PHS.
And again, it reminds me of Monty Python... but this time the military sketch :D "MARCHING UP AND DOWN THE SQUARE AIN'T ENOUGH GOOD FOR YA?!" :D It was such a good collaboration, lots of respect for norwegian military and for you Magnus, for trying it! :)

What actually impresses me the most is that everyone speaks English properly. Where I come from, it seems most of the guys in the army did not have a proper school education.
Same in my country. I'm not sure if our average soldier would be able to show Norway on a map.
The background of this: In Norway or scandinavia in general it isn't a thing to translate every movie. So everyone learns English every day from their first days on. Somebody told me everyone under the age of 50 to 60 is able to speak English more or less fluent.
@@atariks1475 Wow that is pretty incredible. I am from TX, USA and a second language will be taught in school, however, there is absolutely zero incentive to use the second language outside of class. So, all of us forget the language. For me I learned French, but like I said there is no incentive for me to use it. So, it is mostly gone.

Had a chance to meet and trade items with these guys when they were staying in the barracks next door in Quantico, Virginia. Gresseth was there too. He was a cool guy to chat with
its insane how well trained these dudes are with their drills, its like they float across the floor
All you got to do is roll your feet, make each step as long as the last (85cm to be exact), keep your back straight, chest out, shoulders back, and probably the most corrected posture for new drill guards: KEEP YOUR DAMN CHIN UP.

Having served in the Kings Guard myself, Magnus did really well considering this was his first time ever doing military drill. Managing to adapt to the pace pretty well in such a short time was impressive. A nice trip through memory lane for me

This is so awesome. These are the things combined I really enjoy. Climbing, the army and drill platoons. I saw HMKG live ones and I was a fan immediately. It's really great to see this collaboration and a small peek in the daily live of these dedicated soldiers. Thank you very much Magnus!!!

Just to say facts
In the US Army basic training we did Drill and Ceremony (D&C). For me personally the best part of the whole experience was the D&C competition at the end of training between the different platoons. The sense of comunitas was extraordinary, it wasn't until then that felt like a true soldier. The only time I ever got to do D&C again was for funeral duty, which we treated with great reverence and took great pride in. It was a great honor for me personally to participate in sending our Soldier to their final resting place and in brining some small measure of peace to the family that was left behind.
I have so much respect for their commitment.
Imagine doing this outside in summertime for weeks...
To join the drill team is an adventure. They get to perform and represent the Norwegian army many places both domestic and abroad.

Would love to visit Canada again sometime, as a civilian this time around.

Honestly those Gents do a fine job at Drill. As a Marine there is a familiar feeling when doing Port arms and Carry Arms with the clicks and pops sounding so beautifully that it just makes doing it so pleasing. Anyone seeing this and wanting to do it , I shall implore you to but when learning. Learn it as you wood an instrument , for that is what they are Instruments of destruction ready to die but never will.
By the end I was shouting "other way up, wrong hand, facing in..." I so wanted you to get it right. That looked totally impossible, well done. Great fun.
