    I really think that a better question for us regular folks is should you buy a new small city car or used Audi.

    • @gmansplit
      @gmansplit 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really, for (statistically) at least 10% of the people watching this, this is a question that they could be asking.

    • @vanquish421

      Lord Tippington the Wise - Atheist Knight of Le Reddit Gentlesirs 10% is pretty regular, it isn't exactly the 1% or the 0.1%. You don't see someone in the 10% and think "man, I wish I was rich like that guy"

    • @ze_ep
      @ze_ep 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well using a rule-of-thumb 20% of annual salary as affordability limit, for an S3 with starting price $43k you'd need to be making $215k. That's top 5% just to get base spec.

    • @gmansplit
      @gmansplit 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      y3mble My question is, what is up with this arbitrary "20% of annual salary" bullshit. People have absolutely no problem taking out 15 and 30 year mortgages on houses they can't afford, but when it comes to a car, that must be only 20% of 1 years' salary. I call bullshit. There are plenty of cars you can buy that will depreciate none or very little; 997 GT3 and GT3 RS, Ferrari 360 stick, Gallardo stick, older Dodge Viper and even newer Dodge Vipers, first and second gen R8s with manuals (because the manual is no longer offered) All of these cars wont depreciate much or at all. So if someone making 100k wants to have a Ferrari, then they can make some sacrifices in other areas of their life and get that Ferrari. Getting a 150k house instead of a 250k house for example, or just not living in as expensive of a neighborhood for example etc. These cars can be had for non 1%-ers, and they can be had without putting yourself in a financial crisis. And yes, in the area that I live, you can get a 1600 sq ft renovated house with a garage for 150k.

    You'd get killed much more on depreciation on a new S3 than on, say, a 7 year old R8. Sure the running costs are massive in comparison but depreciation on old exotics isn't really a problem unless you wreck it

    • @ScottZ370
      @ScottZ370 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah I thought this, if anything it might start appreciating especially if you grab a manual and since the R8 is effectively a RS4 under the hood it means maintenance won't be too silly.

    • @XoVoX
      @XoVoX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      yea, his thought process is broken. 10 year old+ supercars tend to have already have taken their depreciation hit and if anything begin to climb back in value.

    • @tagheuer383
      @tagheuer383 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. The depreciation on a 2009 R8 4.2 would likely be less than the new S3's tumbling value over the next 5 years. Same with the maintenance, the 4.2 isn't really i stressed engine. Really, the most significant cost difference here is not having a warranty) and potentially insurance, depending on your mileage).

    • @joelc.armstrong7951
      @joelc.armstrong7951 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paganis and those Lamborghinis with "the cockpit of a fighter plane" are considered hyper cars today. Those type of cars were the "supercars" of yesteryear, and I would have to agree that they were definitely found wanting in the area of interior design.
      It seems that more time was spent focusing on the exterior design and the overall experience of the car--the engine and exhaust sound, brakes, straight-line and cornering performance--than what's going on inside. (See Ferrari F40's "door releasing" device and it's [lack of] carpet.)

    • @Appleaddict22
      @Appleaddict22 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL are you stupid? He's comparing OLD supercars, only a small handful of which are in the price range of this car, which no, definitely do not have a better interior than this. And even if they did, don't be stupid and compare a Ferrari F12 to an Audi S3...

I was able to get her unstuck. I drive my car 40-50,000 km per year. I felt like setting her on fire when this occurred. I didn't but I felt like selling it. The issue has yet to be resolved by Audi. A fully kitted S3 is around $52,000. Certainly not supercar territory but definitely in the range of a used Z06, M3, used lightly equipped Cayman S3, or a well used Evora.

  • @mrtriple2414
    @mrtriple2414 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even an S3 has performance greatly in excess of what you can reasonably safely use on U.K. roads. I own a 2016 hatchback in Daytona gray. It’s fantastic but oh too fast to use all of more than 2nd gear in the rural roads around me. For 3rd towards the red line, you need a good A-Road and eyes on stalks. More than that and it’s a drive to the nearest M-way, which personally I find dull. Logically, I have an overpowered car. Which is why I’m about to buy a tuning box to take it to around 360bhp, placing it close to earlier model RS3 output.

If you can't afford to run don't buy no matter how much you may want it in the long run its very likely it won't be worth it. After going on the s3 configurator today, the s3 has such a boring exterior for car which underneath is brash and quick and inside is miles better than its competitor, the cla, but on the exterior the cla looks like a much better car, oh and a used Audi R8 is probably around this price right

      Good luck buying a used R8 for $50k. The current generation starts around $150 new. I suspect a used prior gen R8 would still command north of $85k if you can find one.

    I think a used AMG is a WAY better option. They depreciate so much, you can get a ton of car for the money. Such as a M156 E63 for around 18k.

    If you're too scared of a true exotic, just pick up an NSX. They can be had for less than an S3 (still) and won't depreciate anymore. Or if you want the fun but a modern car, maybe an m140i or something.

    Not liking Audi aside, I would always get a brand new car over an old used up super car. The interiors on old super cars are SHIT, the rides are completely uncomfortable and most of them don't even have A/C, much less cupholders. You can't compare picking a daily driver with a super car thats just silly. The purpose of both are totally different. I will take Tesla's features, screen and comfort over a 800hp any day. What do I need all that HP for? To sound cool while I'm stuck in traffic everyday?

      Your comment shows that you did not get the point. Comparing a normal new car with a used super car makes no sense. But most people who drive everyday from A to B don't really need a super car anyway.

      I bought an S3 this weekend, and the Finance manager told me he had an S5, but would prefer the S3 at this point. His primary reason seemed to be that the S3 was a 4 door, whereas the S5 is a 2 door.
      They're actually almost identical from a performance standpoint, but obviously the S3 is a smaller car. So it just comes down to personal preference. I can tell you I was trying to decide between an S3 and S4 and after driving both, preferred the S3. Plus, it's a little less $$, which is always nice. Good luck whichever way you go, and congrats!

    The "buy new or used" argument misses out on an important detail. It is much cheaper to buy a new car than a used car, APRs are significantly lower and dealer contributions are much higher. If you're buying a new car you're batshit if you buy it cash as it'll be worth half what you paid in 3 years.
    Buying cash? Buy used.
    Buying on finance? Buy new.

    you could buy an early GTR for the money which is about the best supercar for just over £30k. Put a personal plate on it and 9/10 people wont even know your driving a 7y old supercar, yeah tax is high expensive to run but look at the car you would be driving in, a genuine supercar with over 190mph top speed and 3.5s to 60mph

    As nice and as conformist it is, I was rather hoping the Audi was just a price yardstick and the report would be on 928's or Esprits or 993/6's for similar money. Maybe an Alpine A610 or Venturi for left-field interest. But no. Oh, and older era supercar prices are on the up and this'll lose 30% of its value in the first year... :o/
