Schylling Lava Lamp quality control issues

  • I bought a Schylling Lava Lamp, and the liquid was so cloudy that you can barely see the wax inside, despite following the instructions for clearing cloudy liquid, and running the lamp for several days on top of that. I exchanged the lamp, and the replacement, shown in this video, is exactly the same.

Bought another Schilling today with white lava and teal fluid, it seems OK and back in January 2023 I bought my first one with clear fluid and white lava and it’s been great so I don’t know maybe yours was dropped or shaken in transit. I got it today at London Drugs Canada $19. My first one in January was full price $35

I used to love lava lamps, my sister and I both had them when we were teenagers, and I knew quite a number of people who had them. I still have mine, but haven't used it in ages since it got dropped and some of the water has leaked out and I think I damaged the threading on the glass bottle neck, I'm not sure if the company who made it still makes them.

I bought this exact lamp on eBay thinking I avoided the “amazon” cloudiness. Sadly this lamp still shipped through Amazon and looked worse than this one. I “attempted” to filter it but couldn’t get the cap back to factory tightness. It also seemed to affect the lava flow. Some of these are just bad. Thanks to them moving their manufacturing over to China. I miss our 90s lamps

I bought a pre owned clear liquid and blue wax lava from amazon of this lava lamp lite / schylling lava lamp brand. The liquid does look very cloudy as you mentioned even after running for several days.
You’re right this brand is one of the bigger lava lamp brands. Amazon and even the store Spencers sell this brand.
On Spencers website they list webpages that list questions and concerns about the lava lamps. Their website says that the cloudiness is not a defect and they will not allow this as a reason for a refund , unless I read the website wrong.
The cloudiness does not appear in the product description and image , so to me this seems like it is not the same product that is described and is a reason to return. Especially if you don’t get a product as it is described and depicted on the website.
Glad you started the return process!
Hope you get one, maybe from somewhere else, that you are happy with the results of!

was very interesting. Most of my lava lamps are from Mathmos.

I think they sell lamps in this exact style (not sure about the brand though) at Walmart here in the States. Maybe next time you're on this side of the border, it might be worth taking a look.

One possibility not mentioned in this video is the transportation from the factory to the destination. You don’t know how these lamps are handled during the shipping process, including the transportation. If your lamp shows a cloudy lave display either live with it or practice some patience by buying Distilled H20 paraffin wax, food, dye, brine, Epson salt however I have read that Epson salt will cause corrosion (over a course of time) at the base of the lava lamp. And finally straws. There are plenty of videos out here on how to make a lava lamp from scratch. And that’s exactly what you’re doing. Do keep in mind that once you pop the beer bottle cap off the lamp that voids the warranty and you’re on your own. Good luck 🙂

Don’t do this, putting salt in any lava lamp will mess it up

Funny I got a 27" Grande.. same exact issue. I bought it from a 3rd party. Contacted Lavalamp/Schylling and was told they dont honor "warranty" replacements as I bought it 3rd party. All they told me was to cycle it 8-10hrs a day for 2-4weeks to rid the cloudy issue. It's been over a week with no improvement. I contacted the 3rd party store where I got it and got ghosted.. so.. I spent $200 on a cloudy AF grande.. however.. i'm tech savvy.. and i'm going to filter the water and see if it helps. they say to use 2micron filters and go about it that way.. dont use charcoal. we shall see.. but schylling is a shitty company. I have lamps from the 70s-90s and those work flawlessly. These things.. brutal.

I used to love using mine, but I think I stopped using it for a while because they take so very long to warm up.

Does this lava lamp use a tungsten/incandescent lightbulb? I would assume LED bulbs aren't any good for lava lamps because they don't produce enough heat to be useful.

I remember I got one of those once and the "lava" would not flow. It just stayed at the bottom. So I returned it and got a larger lamp and it worked fine.

A year after you posted this, lava lamp is still shipping the lamps cloudy. A shame that the lavaLamp brand is willing to ruin their reputation. There are many cheap Chinese lava lamps out now that are much better looking. Mathmos is the best quality and probably more collectible since they are the original company. Unfortunately with pice conversion and pricy shipping costs they get expensive. I also heard that Mathmos does not honor their warranty if shipping overseas, so your on your own if there are problems with the lamp.

Just bought (July 10, 2023) an original Lava Lamp with red wax and clear liquid and it came with the "clear" liquid looking like milk. I also followed the instructions and that did not help. I called Schylling today and they told me to repeat the cloudy liquid procedure continually for two weeks. :(

Interesting. If you actually do it for two weeks, write again and let me know the result.

Yes - there are guides online. It voids your warranty of course. If this were a used lamp, I would do that. But not a new one.

If the product doesn't perform as advertised they should refund the money.
I guess you might have better luck with a vintage one...

    • @Bluethunderboom
      @Bluethunderboom ปีที่แล้ว +1

@themaritimegirl Then, there could be the reason why there is a quality issue to this lava lamp liquid where they may use an odd chemical liquid compound that really creates fog to reduce visibility, and I never seen that to happen to be called chemical reaction for some reason, and chemical mix don't combine together. All I know is that Chinese manufacturers don't care about quality built other than to make cheap components and so forth.
I remember I had a lava lamp that me and my family went to Kart Kountry for a fun ride and playing arcade games. Go kart racing is what I refer to it, and after the fun event, I went ahead and got the lava lamp and take home with me, and for some years later, after the usage, the glass bottle cracks and starting to leak, and I just fear it can cause a fire, and I really am disappointed that the lava lamps don't last long like it used to be, and it is really scary that creats fire hazard, and it never had a recall list. What happened to my lava lamp that I have, I threw it away, and I rather not deal with it that causes problems. Compare to my vintage/modern lava lamp that I thinkme andmyfamilybought it from Target, it last long, and it is easily to change to a new 40 watt appliance incandescent light bulb and really worked really well.
I am deeply sorry about quality defects for your lava lamp. =(
