The difference between Zane and Kaiba? Very simple. Zane has never actually lost to the protagonist. First victory didn't come from attempted suicide.
Well Kaiba's father taught him that after Kaiba took the company from his father just simply jumped out the window and committed suicide right in front of him which made Kaiba think that losing means death which is y he did that

Zane never wanted Sy to drop out, he just wanted to push him out of his fragile state and evolve. By season 4, Syrus has definitely evolved from the beginning as he inherented Zane's dragons.
I still think the big brother of the year award is a long shot for Zane. But compared to the treatment Chazz gets from his own brothers Slade and Jagger, not so.
But he's the reason for his state. Syrus seemed plenty confident facing that bully unless Zane deemed that fake. And Zane gave him Power Bond so he must have been different. We're missing a piece of the puzzle here.
When you want to teach, you are the one who needs to adapt to your audience.
What makes him an asshole is that he saw his method had a negative effect, but kept using it.

If anything, I'm more impressed that he took the attack without closing his eyes or even blinking. It was bright lightning coming directly at him, and he didn't care if he got blinded by it. Hologram or not, that'd still hurt the eyes, at the very least.
Apparently Zane wasn’t this much of a dick in the original sub he was still kinda cold but he wasn’t a jerk to Syrus in the beginning at all. He actually did care about him

I think it’s a bit of both ego and tough love. Ego because Zane was the best dualist in the academy, hung around the best dualist (well Alexis), and had to deal with the fact that his brother was the one of the worst dualist. He probably felt that Syrus would bring his name down and be treated like a joke also. Tough love because he wants Syrus to have a backbone as both a dualist and person, so he cast syrus aside and refuse to hold his hand as it’ll only make him even more spoil.

At that time, sartorius would inbue spells on aster's cards before his duels which would lead to mind manipulation effects on the opponents who lost to aster, jaden couldn't see his cards and zane was afraid of dueling.
This an interesting point. Maybe everyone hates syrus for his low self confidence but in real life A LOT of people actually think like this! Like they have all the potential but the biggest blockage is yourself

Syrus is a great character, he really grows throughout the series. Yes he’s insecure, & doesn’t believe in himself, but that’s the starting point of his character. It’s character development

Starting hand for the 2nd player is 6. Zane's starting hand had the time capsule, 2 cyber dragon, mst, defusion, and monster reborn. Zane had a total of 3 turns so he drew 3 cards. Plus the card from the capsule. So 10 cards all together.

I believe in a world where kids go to a boarding school to learn about a trading card game and to use said trading cards to play duels against each other, i do not believe, however, that what Zane is holding at 11:04 is a deck of 35 cards.
Edit: to the lovely people who responded to my comment and those who might respond in the future, i was specifically referring to the amount of cards Zane was holding at that very moment.
You can have a maximum of 35 as little as 20 so he could in fact be holding his whole deck as I counted 20 cards just from the ones we could see in his hand
35? Really? I thought a deck of cards can only hold up to 40 cards max, the reason i said 35 is because he already pulled out 5 cards on his first turn. And he took out his deck in his first turn to take the card...tho perhaps i should've said 34 cards cause he did draw his first card when the duel started after his initial 5.

Syrus had powerbond and limiter removal. He literally could have ended the duel but deliberately choose a worse strategy. Just saying, maybe Zane was right at the time.
Being right, is one thing, the measure it overshadows emotions and leave something questioning everything is passed a limit bar. I've been there and only after repeating the mistake, I grasped how and why, and learned. Zane told Syrus answers then left him with a cold--shoulder, or never was an example to follow and show what he intended to.
@@geoffreyedgson7875 Ultimately in my opinion the truth should be far more important than emotions and the point Zane was trying to make wasn't something he could simply say. Despite the fact that Both Zane and Syrus had the same classes there was a clear difference in dueling. Despite receiving the same education from the same teachers, Syrus still didn't understand. I really think Zane had the right approach even if it was admittedly harsh, Syrus had to learn on his own how to play his cards.

Just a emotionless jack ass older brother who was constantly making him feel small and inferior. The only reason why he made that strategic mistake is because of the fact his brother destroyed his confidence instead of working with him to build it up. You forget that he is a damn CHILD with clear anxiety issues that cannot be fixed by giving the coldest shoulder possible
@@animationdude9 Well I respectfully disagree. I believe Zane was telling him the hard truth that his skills at that time were simply not good enough and he wasn't wrong. Besides Cyrus didn't immediately improve as a duelist once he met Jayden, it took a few years for him to work himself up to obelisk blue. At the end of the Day I believe Zane was trying telling him the honest truth rather than a comforting lie and I believe that's the best approach. Child or not, they need to know where they stand so they can improve and telling them they are better than they are does more harm than good in my opinion.

@@amity4600 Actually we don't know if it was the last card in his hand at the end of his second turn so there's actually a strong chance that he drew de-fusion on his last turn of the duel. Meaning when he fusion summoned cyber twin dragon, the last card in his hand was actually the third cyber dragon and not de-fusion.

This always was a bit of an issue I had with Zane. I understand that he told his brother those words as a lesson, as well as saying he isnt good enough. But only said those words because he cared for his brother. While that being said, you watched your brother hop on a shitty plank and was willing to watch him sail off into the ocean knowing he can't swim.
Zane was willing to let Syrus die and that never sat right with me.

@@thecrimsonwrath1337 if you're referring to the theory that Jaden could have had honest in his hand when Neos attacked slifer, I'm afraid that's been debunked. you see his entire hand the turn he loses, all spells except the only monster is winged kuriboh, and he uses all of the spells prior to slifers summon. if you're referring to another theory, id love to hear it as ive always wished jaden won that duel. i think it's intentional that you see jaden's hand so people wouldn't be able to make the honest theory

It's almost as if the holographic projections are somewhat physical. I can understand reflexivley reacting to a threatning holograph but it seams like most of these people overreact during an attack. Zane is calm eather way.

I think the reason Zane didn't have passion is because he wanted to find a worthy opponent and even though Duel Academy was one of the most elite places ever, even the people there were no match for him. And he respected Jaden for not suffering in defeat and the fact that he put up such a good fight during the duel. Zane wanted to duel him again eventually when he got stronger. And that's what happens at the end of the season.

Kaiba does respect Yugi tho? Multiple times in Battle City he says “You are my only true rival in this tournament”, and things along those lines. Yugi’s the only duelist Kaiba does respect.
8:44 oh my gosh, right when jaden hears syrus cry, it really angered him. This is why i love the relationship between jaden and syrus. Syrus is so attached to jaden because he is like the older brother that he always wanted. Jaden honestly makes a much better brother than zane. At least its also nice that zane did got character development thru the series. I found it sweet of him after he realized in the end of this episode that he is glad that syrus has a great friend like jaden.

Jaden could have won if he summoned Rottweiler on the same turn he summoned Thunder Giant because Thunder Giant was special summoned meaning he can summon another monster like Rottweiler, later after Jaden summons Bubbleman he could used the trap A Hero Emerges to make Zane choose a card and if that card was Winged Kuriboh, Jaden could have used Transcendent Wings to discard Clayman and Polymerization to destroy Cyber End Dragon and win the duel, the problem here is Jaden misplayed his cards
Andrew Vlack the problem with that is now he's relying on luck to get the card he needed. I think he played it as perfectly as he could. If he would have held Clayman Polymerization Wing Kuriboh and Transcending Wings the chances would have been low. Actually he really won because Bubblemans ability is really a special summon. He then could have played Wing Kuriboh and set Transcending Wings face down and wiped Cyber End Dragon that way.
Zane won fair and square.
Let's say he plays Rottweiler normally instead of using A Hero Emerges. 0 cards in hand. Zane attacks Thunder Giant and Rottweiler with Cyber Twin Dragon. There are now 2 possibilities:
He ends his turn, Zane attacks with Cyber End Dragon, and Jaden activates A Hero Emerges with 4 cards in hand. Zane has to pick Winged Kuriboh for Jaden to summon it, a 25% chance, and Jaden can use Transcendent Wings to win.
Or more likely, Jaden uses Polymerization to summon Mudball Man thinking he can stall the turn he needs to pull off Transcendent Wings since he doesn't know Zane can summon Cyber End Dragon. Zane attacks, Jaden uses A Hero Emerges. This time it's a 50% chance to hit Winged Kuriboh, which is better, but now he doesn't have cards to discard to activate Transcendent Wings since you have to discard 2 cards to use it. Zane destroys Mudball Man regardless of the target from A Hero Emerges and wins the duel.
Also to correct the other person: Bubbleman can only be special summoned when it's the only card in your hand. It wasn't since Jaden got back Clayman and Polymerization from Rottweiler being destroyed right before he drew it.
Transcendent wings forces you to discard 2 cards as the cost. 2 cards Jaden didn’t have.

As an Adult you realize how dramatic these kids are.
I mean when Jaden loses a meaningless, no stakes duel against Aster, he literally passes out, his cards go blank, and he has to go on a life-changing experience to find new cards.
So that's why Jaden challenge Zan a duel. That was totally epic.

Jaden had Winged Kuriboh in his hand. If he activated its affect and sent it to the GY all battle damage that turn would have been 0 and Zane would have lost cuz of Power Bond's efffect
Thats Kuriboh's effect. Winged Kuriboh's effect only works when hes destroyed in battle.

The Truesdales: basically the Kaibas if they had character arcs that didn't require plot to develop. Unlike Seto, I actually think Zane wanted to see Syrus grow as a duelist: he was tough on him at first because he knew Sy had the ability to be great, but just lacked the belief in himself to be motivated to reach it. Think we'll get a re-dub and see the fourth season in English, I've heard it's good.
But Syrus seemed to have confidence vs the bully only when he made a mistake which everyone makes did he start having a problem. Syrus also seemed quite young there. Which when your young you dont understand meanings behind words so you only have the words to go on. Besides when Zane is shown to get Cyber End Dragon by Shepard he seems like a much happier kid.
Honestly this duel really was more about Zane having a great opening hand while Jaden didn't. Since the duel was so short you know exactly what cards Zane had. After his first draw

Remember when Cyber End Dragon was the best card in the Cyber Dragon archetype? Now there are like 5 more Cyber Dragon fusion monsters. Cyber End Dragon was the OG though with highest attack even until this day.
Cyber Dragon Infinity is the best Cyber Dragon card and it's an Xyz monster.

@@antesprlje41 No it couldn't. Winged Kuriboh needs to be on the field to negate battle damage, Jaden already normal summoned Bubbleman, so he could not have summoned Kuriboh
