    Fifth episode in this mega-filter build for my large trout pond. Today we will take a look at the static bed chambers and I explain about the water flow direction and filter media.
    Looking INSIDE filter media video: bit.ly/2KbOAGk
    The next episode will highlight the two shower filters over another static bed - all will be filled with a nation of media.
    *When using side pressure to cut a hole with a drill bit use safety glasses since a broken drill bit is a sharp object which can damage eyes.
    Alfagrog used in this video is the E40 size but there is a smaller size available (E25) for smaller filters.

      Pondguru brilliant update that’s some bloody media you have!
      Did you crate the alphagrog to make it easier to remove! Loose would hold more but would be a pain if you had to ever remove it!
      Is there a chance you could measure levels before the big pump is installed and say a couple f months after to show how the nitrate nitrite and ammonia’s have dropped
      Great video again
      Cheers
      Kev

    I am sorry about your loss!
    The Filter system is really beginning to come together now, it is looking great.
    Yes the water is starting to clear up, and the clarity will get to a more prestige and desired stage.
    Thank you for sharing. I gave the video a big thumbs up.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the clarity is slowly improving but it really needs the big pump installing on the system (which I don't have yet) to shift more water into the system. Also the 12k lph pump running the system will be swapped to the showers. So far I have close to 1.3 ton of filter media in the system, lol

    • @ultimatefishkeeping
      @ultimatefishkeeping 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a lot of media but it is needed for a Pond of such a grand scale.
      The new Pump will come, just do one thing at a time my friend, because it is a massive project and it can be overwhelming if you try to do everything at once.
      Kind regards
      Luca

    I have spent the morning going over this bunch of Pond Filter videos, and one thing comes out as true now to me.
    Keeping fish, in a bowl, in an aquarium, or in a pond, is not about the fish.
    The fish are not where we find the enjoyment.
    Its the gear.
    Its the gear we build that goes along with keeping fish that is the real source of enjoyment for the fish keeper.
    The water, the filters, the pumps, the tanks, the lights, the stands, the power, the endless plans and the endless building , and the endless dreaming up new ways to do things.
    Thats where the fun it!
    Its not the fish, its the other stuff.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is pretty much where I have been coming from for the last 20+ years in the industry and I think I even have a video out there called "Filtration, Filtration, Filtration" as that is number 1, 2 and 3 most important things for any tank or pond.
      While I enjoy seeing new designs and fancy products the root of what they set out to achieve doesn't vary much and a cheap DIY filter with a suitable amount of quality media (supporting huge amounts of bacteria) will always outperform a stupidly expensive filter with crap media set up badly. If companies focused on making products which allowed nature to do her work instead of focusing on after sales and fobbing fish keepers off with unnecessary (and expensive) treatments we would save the lives of millions of fish every year.
      That's probably why I turn down all 'sponsorships' or payment requests from any company as that would make me no more reliable source of information than those awful 'social influencers' producing endless live streams and information devoid vlogs.
      Luckily I'm in a position to ask viewers to send their own filters in to include in the 'pimp my filter' series and have the necessary funds to make my own filters - that's a great position to be in as I'm never going to be in anyone's pocket.
      I believe that as owners of TH-cam channels we have a responsibility to keep it real and factual but I seem to be swimming against the tide with that mindset, lol

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will be well done when it finally works, lol - so far I have 400 litres of media in the moving bed and it is not moving. However I'm sure it will when the big pump is running the system instead of the 12000 litre per hour one (which will be used on the showers).

    Awesome Filter Richard. Your message with filters is very consistent and makes a lot of sense. The same formula for small miniature aquarium filter up to monster pond filter. I love it.
    I noticed, that your tubs are changing shape under the big load of media and water. Could be good idea to do some additional bracing, so you can keep it aligned and functional for ever. Obviously, when everything is done.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is really just to have clearer water but the boost in biological activity will allow for more fish / heavier feeding. The spring which feeds the pond has been boosted too as teh drainage up the fields got sorted out a couple of months ago so that should also help. Water is clearing a bit but it still has a long way to go.
      Yes, Angus was a real treasured member of the family and I'm still bummed out about him moving on - however, shortly after I buried him I had a really strange natural / supernatural experience from him which I will cover in another video.

    i want to make a guess for the tank, its going to be a daphnia culture tank. that way you can feed small fish in your pond live food.
    at the same time, daphnia will eat the floating algae and floating bacteria that is in your pond water. that is the probable reason for having the water feed coming off the brush filter "tub" .
    most of the sediments that is inorganic like dirt and stone dust would be settled out by the vortex and brush filters.
    basically not only are you improving your filtering capacity, you are also boosting the micro organisms that clean up the water.
    only problem is the tank isnt in the light and i doubt using a fluorescent light works as well.
    but i dont know much about daphnia culture.
    the other possiblity is bamboo shrimp or other filter feeders
    and RIP Angus.. another black kitty life cut too short

    Hey Richard.... I'm enjoying the build. BTW.... do you have any idea whats going on with Marl's Aquatics??? I haven't seen a video from him in some time.... Thanks!

      Unless the notification system is broken again he's probably having a bit of a rest. I'm assuming you mean Mark's Aquatics? If so I've seen him commenting on videos lately.

    Why not use a ball joint or perhaps flexible hose between the two? Would that work better or would that not be possible?
    😆 Maybe I should learn to wait until the video is finished before commenting lol, now I see what you were up to and that the two tanks are sitting close to each other. 😂🤣😅 Oops good job on the filtration system, fantastic design.

    How about using the aquarium as a freshwater refugium - fill it with oxygenating plants. Great vid: giving me plenty of ideas!

    Aww sorry about Angus Richard, pond/lake/ocean looks like it is clearing up hopefully in a few months it should make a huge difference but obviously take a lot of time with that amount of water

    Richard what are the numbers on that pond? Gallons? size? Depth? How much water per hour is flowing in from the spring? What's the history of it? You made it? Bought the land with it?
    How many gallons per hour is the pump going to move? What's the exit?..pipe or ornamental falls of some kind?
    Thanks..take your time on the project..there is always tweaking for years to come I'm sure.

      It was uploaded a few days ago as unlisted then made public today. I don't do any clubs / patreon or none of that other stuff - just free videos.

    Awesome video!!! So how do feel about using "hydroton" clay pellets in the static beds? Not sure about anaerobic/aerobic conditions inside. I know there soft and wouldn't last for a moving bed. Love to here your thoughts on this. Thanks

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hydroton makes a great growing media for hydroponic / aquaponic set ups but isn't too good as a filter media due to the lack of good internal structure - still better than nothing or better than plastic in a static bed for sure.

    I know you said you were stopping comments on videos but hopefully will catch you before you finish. What is the big tank behind you at the start of the video & where can I buy them in Europe. The Americans have big rubber maid tanks. Also i am trying to heat a 1000 litre IBC tank in a shed that gets down to 10°C in winter. I want to keep cichlids in it. What would be the most economical way of heating a large body of water like that?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a manufacturer of large tanks near me called AC Aquatics and with regard to heating a large tank in a shed the way forward with that would probably be to spend the money on excellent insulation for the shed then get a decent sized in-line heater or even heat the room with a thermostat to control temperature.

    I have 1 little concern. The feed into the shower filter tub. It is quite a large upside down U bend. When this finally fills with air it will slow your flow rate. I would leave it open and disturb the water surface instead of the venturi you added.
    Sorry to hear about your cat.
